Poll: Better exotic adventure game: Far Cry 3 or Uncharted games? (85 votes)

Far Cry 3 56%
Uncharted games 44%

My friends (and I use this expression genuinely and amicably), I've been playing Far Cry 3 lately and came to the conclusion that it's inevitable these two games be pitted against each other.

I hope you will find this comparison more or less logical and not irrational, even if these games represent two different perspectives (FPP vs TPP) and different structure (open-world vs. linear).

By Uncharted games, I mean all the games in the series, but as far as Far Cry is concerned, I think it is most fitting to pick the third installment).

I am not the most qualified person to judge these games, as I've only played the first Uncharted.

Which of these games excel at making you a part of an exciting adventure more?

I think Far Cry 3 might not be as tight and focused as Uncharted games but it has a lot more lasting appeal and variety. What is more, it provides a lot more control to the player. Moreover, its achievement structure doesn't force you to use any particular gameplay style, like for example Deus Ex: Human Revolution forced you to bo stealthy, so you can play any way you like, at any point - you can liberate Outposts stealthily but then you can blast the shit up using heavy weapons. Crafting is immensely satisfying and liberating Outposts and taking over the Radio Towers gives a sense of gradual fullfilment, coupled with some really naturalistic placement of Relics that you can collect, and explore some off-the-beaten track caves and temples leaves you in awe of the locale. Of course, the game might get a bit repetitive over time once you've unlocked most of the gear, but when there is still a lot of stuff to unlock, the game's at its most satisfying.

On the other hand, Uncharted's tightly scripted sequences might have seem bombastic at the time, but IMO their charm faded really quickly as this kind of gameplay has quickly become a cliche. Uncharted games feature really long pointless "movie-like" fragments with unnecessary amount of walking, plus scripted automated jumping fragments. This kind of gameplay is not exciting at all from the viewpoint of a gamer AD 2014, and in fact, is quite archaic if you ask me.

So, for me, Far Cry 3 wins. Not that I dislike games with cinematic flair or would prefer an open-world game over a linear one all the time, as I really liked 2013's Tomb Raider (however with some caveats as well).

Anyway, if you were to compare the games in terms of:

  • graphics
  • animation
  • environments
  • gunplay
  • gameplay and variety
  • sense of exploration and fullfilment

What game would emerge as a winner?

Adventure as not a genre, but a game that gives you a feeling of an adventure, and taking place in an exotic / unusual location.

Why don't you google "Adventure Game" and see what pops up ? I bet ya it will be none of the things you just said.

You don't understand me. I didn't write "exotic adventure game" as a genre. Let me break it down for you:

EXOTIC ADVENTURE (as literally adventure as you'd use this word in NON-GAMING context) and after this SEMANTIC UNIT there is word GAME which is COMPLETELY UNRELATED to the word ADVENTURE.

OK?

I know, its just very confusing for the select few who are actually familiar with Adventure Games.

Far Cry 3 has higher production values , bigger world and more replay value than Uncharted . So , I'll go with FC3 .

Uncharted.

I didn't feel much like an adventurer in FarCry 3. Just a dude getting tattoos from Christy Mack, while burning weed fields. It's cool. But it didn't feel adventure-y.

I voted Uncharted. I cant say any of the Uncharted games is necessarily better than FC3, but they are great adventures.

Farcry 3 by far in all of those categories you mentioned. Yes, gfx too if you count the PC version. You should add stealth to that list.

UC however has better cinametiacs (in-game) and story. But I'm not willing to trade all.

How could anyone get a sense of adventure from a carefully scripted and linear franchise like Uncharted? Everything that happens is predetermined and it's the same every time you go through it.

My money goes to Far Cry 3. Excellent replay value and lots of fun things to do.

Uncharted is great. But you play the games once, you'll likely NEVER EVER play them again, just like most PS exclusives. Unless, you're into the MP portion, which to me doesn't belong in the games in the first place.

Far Cry 3 was an amazing game aside from the "boss fights" and the terribad ending. Uncharted was crap, Uncharted 2 was enjoyable but had little substance and I haven't played 3 because people say it's worse than 2 and I barely enjoyed 2.

A fairly unusual comparison here.

Uncharted games are slightly less boring and tedious than Far Cry 3. They also don't devolve into hunting icons on a minimap. Neither series are adventure games though.

Far Cry 3 was interesting in the beginning, and then it reared its ugly head and showed me its true form, it didn't take long for the game to devolve into "Collect this many doodads and kill that many doohickies" only 30 minutes in and it was already heavily padded. :(

And with that being said, that makes Uncharted the winner, right ? WRONG !

I'd place Tomb Raider over both these games, plus its got Functional adventure not movie type adventure.

there really nothing alike to be fair....both are great in there own way....I loved both...

graphics are better in uncharted allways and more smooth less crashes etc......

I like how you have maps in far cry it a much longer type of game.....uncharted is more about close range gameplay....things to solve...it more tomb raider like....

farcry primal is awesome with the animals except for the dam honey bager.

as a very young child I got to hold one up close on a trip once and someone snap a pic of me and I tell you the claws on it are huge..it really a smart animal with no fear at all and it don't give a fuk ever.....it saw me as no threat and let me hold it ...mind you this was a tamed from young age honey bager......the wild ones are very dangerous.

in the game when you pet it sometimes it will bite you.....fuking bager don't know who the animal beast master is......the only other animal to ever impress me like the honey bager was the time I spent with a black jaguar.....they are a mighty and most dangerous thing on earth I ever seen that can crush a skull with a greater bite force then anything.

I never got to see the 20 foot croc lolong and the 20 foot anaconda that I would not get in the cage with....and I don't care how tame the guy said it was....I have seen what pythons can do and how fast...

far cry primal has lots of fun animal to play with .....unlike far cry when they just attack you for no reason......oh and owls are cool too....

There is no "adventure" in the Uncharted games. You follow the path the game sets before you.

In Far Cry 3 (and 2, Blood Dragon and 4), you play the game at your own pace, and do what you want, when you want. It is the very definition of "adventure" in the sense of exploration and discovery.

I'm not sure what game you played, but the theme of Far Cry 3 was white guy becomes the tribal savage and falls into the whirlpool of insanity. And the ending ruins that theme. There shoudn't have been a "choice", it should have just ended with the "bad" ending.

After Uncharted 4, I've changed my mind. I enjoyed Far Cry 3 a lot but it felt like a theme park. I never felt that world of Far Cry 3 is alive, so it never felt like an adventure or epic journey. Uncharted 4 on other hand despite being linear was more immersive and journey wise, a richer experience.

Far Cry 3 was better(I haven't played UC4, so I'll leave that one out of my comparison).

But I prefer Crysis 1 over both of them.
