I don’t think anyone has ever given me a game. But the biggest shocker for me that I didn’t expect to love so much was A Night In The Woods. I thought it might be kinda cute and whatever but it really hit me hard in the best ways.
Uncharted. Back when I was really young, I was hyped for fallout 3 and went to purchase it soon after it came out. I vaguely heard about uncharted so figured why not buy that too but expected nothing.
Got bored of Fallout within hours. Booted up uncharted to give it a try. Rest is history. Uncharted is one of my fav game series ever and Naughty Dog is my fav studio.
Snakes for the Ngage was given for free to Arena members (free online gaming service). It wasn’t your basic Snake game but a massive reboot of the game with console like gameplay and graphics. Ironically, I felt it was Ngage’s best game, and it was free!

My dad brought home a Nintendo with Mario 3 randomly. That game was just incredible. Then he got the SNES at some point and Super Mario World. Was largely the same experience.
@ProtossRushX: Mario Paint. Didn't ask for it, wasn't even on my radar, but I'll be damned if it wasn't a lot of fun.
Streets of Rage 3. My dad always used to buy me some presents whenever he came home from business trips, and SoR3 turned out to be one of those, which I didn't even know existed at the time. When it comes to my favorite games of all-time, SoR3 is in the top 5, so thanks, dad. :)
Midtown Madness 3 and Brute Force for Xbox, ah the nostalgia is real. Or Apex Legends, if that even counts...
Kotor 2, brother bought it but got bored during the tutorial so couldn't be asked and sent it my way, neither of us had even played the first Kotor, I pushed through showed him how amazing it was finished first play through and went straight into Kotor, then many many playthroughs followed.
Best game given as a surprise was Sonic. I got a SEGA Megadrive II for my birthday. I had seen the box in my parent's wardrobe before it was my birthday, and they found out about that somehow. So they thought the surprise was spoiled. But little did they know, that I didn't even realize that was a gaming console. The box was in English and I didn't speak English. Besides that, I only ever played on our Commodore64, blissfully unaware that other game systems even existed. So I had no idea that it was a game system, and when I got my present I didn't really know how to respond. But when my dad hooked it up to our TV, and I saw the colors and that ****ing crisp Sonic music filled the room, I must have been playing Sonic for 100's of hours I loved it so much.
As a bonus, the best surprise game, period, was Majora's Mask. Considering I didn't know about the game until I saw the box in the toystore, and even then I only picked it up because the cover was so different from the other games. It was more clean looking, and it had the cool mask on it. I was surprised to read the word Zelda, but it wasn't until I looked at the backside that I noticed that it looked remarkably like Ocarina of Time. (Ocarina of Time was my only experience with Zelda before that, a game I loved more than any other at the time.) I remember not believing my eyes at first. They made another game like Ocarina of Time, and I hadn't known about it? But it was so soon... But the pictures sure looked like it. And if I didn't buy it now and it really was what I thought it was, it might be sold out next time my parents took me to the store. So I bought it with what must have been about 20 weeks worth of savings, trembling a little all the way to the car because I wasn't sure at all that it was what I suspected it was. I was concerned I probably made a big mistake and maybe this was something entirely different. But sure enough, it was a new Ocarina of Time. That was a good day. I wonder if it's still possible to have an experience like that for children born in the age of the internet.

Did they win an Oscar this year mr moo moo?
Probably Sunset Overdrive. I had borrowed it from my friend for a few weeks and returned it to him. The next day I went over and he gave the game to me as he didnt like it that much.
The game that I didnt expect to like as much as I did was Stardew Valley. That shit hooked me for 3 months where I just went nuts almost daily in it. Should check my farm now that I think about it.
So many I couldn't list them and all thanks to GWG and GamePass. Without those services I would have never even tried all those games. :D
There are 2 games one was PGA tour on the mega drive. I didn't even like golf I think my dad brought for himself but I ended up playing it endlessly with mates. Another was the fable series I remember someone brought the lost chapters edition on the og Xbox. Played it a lot loved the story and humour currently replaying it on gamepass to beat it.
My cousin with his Best Buy discount bought me Soul Edge for the PS1. I played the crap outta that thing.
There’s been a few in the past but probably the one that stands out the most would be Demon’s Crest for the SNES. I didn’t know anything about that game so it was a complete surprise but a most excellent one at that.
I wanted a SNES, and my parents bought me a Sega Genesis instead (I guess because my cousin had that). Fell in love with Sonic.
FFX-2. I actually thought it was decent......not great, but decent.
I thought the fast paced ATB system was pretty awesome, how you could switch classes on the fly. Everything else about the game was kind of trash.
I'd go with Dark Souls. I went into the game completely blind. Never played Demon Souls, didn't read any reviews or anything, just wanted to play an action RPG and ended up with something quite different, but much better.
