Poll Best Reboot of the 7th Gen (129 votes)

Mortal Kombat 7%
Street Fighter IV 5%
Fallout 3 15%
Wolfenstein 0%
Tomb Raider 25%
Devil May Cry (DMC) 5%
SSX 2%
Twisted Metal 27%
Medal of Honor 1%
Rayman Origins 13%
Need For Speed - Hot Pursuit 1%

If one thing can be said about the 7th gen, it was the generation of the reboot. With so many series having originated from decades back, developers started looking for ways to reinvent and reimagine them for the modern times. So which of these do you think succeeded most at taking a long running title and making it feel new and exciting again?

For me it would be Tomb Raider. I was a fan back from the very first launch in 1996, when Lara Croft was a modest 200 polygons. The exploration and traveling to exotic locations, and the way the player traversed these rich environments was like nothing else before. And after 8 games (plus a few spin offs) wiping the slate clean rejuvenated a 3 generation spanning title to incredible effect

Taking the graphics to the next level, redefining the combat, and reinventing an iconic character to make her more human than she's ever been before made the game feel familiar and fresh. It still had some flaws like the depth and underwhelming challenge of the puzzles, but I do think this reboot did far more good for Tomb Raider, and put Lara back on the map of the sub genre of acrobatic platforming that she invented.

And now it's time to vote for what System Wars says is the best reboot of the 7th gen.

Mass Effect, it was an effective reboot of Superman 64 and E.T. for the Atari 2600 and emulated their quality perfectly.

DmC or Tomb Raider.

Granted, I haven't finished DmC yet, but I've been thoroughly impressed so far.

Fallout 3 was a great game and I really liked it - but I'm still not convinced it needed the Fallout IP. I mean it was a different genre changed many elements of the lore and had a very different feel to either of the first two. As a result in quite conflicted. :P

A lot of games there are great but don't really come off the back of bad ones, like Tomb Raider. It was getting stale but the newer games were still pretty good.

Mortal Kombat, Fallout and Rayman were the best in as far as they took a series that was crap/dormant/bastardised and made it something great/different/exceptional.

IMO every single reboot this gen has been met with mediocrity although I didn't know Fallout 3 was a reboot.....

Mortal Combat was fun for an afternoon although not necessarily a reboot since the others were sort of a vision, Street Fighter was Street Fighter, Tomb Raider was a real example of Lugoscababib Discobiscuits unlike Bioshock and Lara also had an obviously bad fake English accent, Devil May Cry just wasn't Devil May Cry, Medal of Honor LMAO, Rayman Origins no one really pays attention to continuity in those games anyway, everything was pretty much meh.

Regardless I have to give it to Twisted Metal as the stories alone justified the reboot, we get few games even M rated willing to tell stories without limitation and not trying to sugar coat everything out of fear of offending someone. Twisted Metal clearly did not give a $%&# and for that it gets my vote.

Not necessarily the best, but my favorite would have to be Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (that counts, right?)

Best was Tomb Raider.

Ha, whoops, should have said that, I went for Rayman just because it was a series I didn't think would ever really come back after all that Rabbids nonsense and if it did come back I expected it to be a simplistic game for kids. But thankfully I was wrong and they did a great job with it.

Another good that is not on the list is Donkey Kong Country Returns.

Rayman origins is not a reboot.

Mortal Kombat could be considered one by story wise it's also technically not a reboot. Street Fighter IV is also not a reboot.

All three are categorized as reboots by the industry.

Show me Rayman Origins which is a sequel, and Stret Fighter IV, whic is a Sequel, are both called with 5 links each, reboots by legit media sources that are different.

Fallout3... I missed the time in gaming that the prequels were cool, because when I played them they didn't hold my interest... Fallout3 is one of the best rpgs of gen 7 with ease, maybe one of my favorite first playthroughs ever.

if pissing all over a beloved character and then openly mocking every fan of the games who liked him is your definition of a good reboot, then I guess...

gameplay is good, but it's not OMG THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER. DmC was a reboot that never should have happened because everyone wanted a sequel instead. Doesn't matter if the game was ok or not, it's failed financially which means it was a complete backfire. Should have seen that one coming, crapcom.

"beloved character" what a joke. The old Dante was absolutely nothing special or memorable in the first place.

It wouldnt say it was the best Reboot, but damn was it awesome, especially the personality of the fighters and the whole Round 2 making things even harder and Donkey Kong as a secret Fighter

Fun Fact: The Secret Fighter was originally gonna be Princess Peach

It is. By far.

The streamlining of the different styles and more interesting weapons to fight with. Also, Dante isn't an empty shell anymore so that sure as hell helps.

Oh, and btw, the artstyle of this game doesn't wanna make you throw up as opposed to previous DMC games.

I chose Fallout 3. I played the previous Fallout games but they lacked explanation (like most old games) and I didn't care to read up on how the games work. I tried figuring it out on my own but to failure. I've never played a game like it before, so that didn't help. Point being, Fallout 3 is one of my favorite games from last gen so I feel it still deserves the spot.

Human Revolution is a prequel. It's the history leading up to the events before J.C. Denton.

and he even makes an appearance in the end after the credits

Between DmC and Tomb Raider for me. Loved both to pieces.
