I haven't played a great deal of Mario games, but I really liked Mario Sunshine. Such a cool game.

From the 8/16 bit era, I'd say Super Mario World was my favorite.

From that point onward, there's really only Mario 64 to consider until the Wii where I found the first Super Mario Galaxy to be my favorite of the newer Mario games.

@n64dd: It's good and a huge improvement over the first.

Objectively Warioland is probably better but not part of the poll.

It was great when it released, but I think if I were to go back and play it again, I'd be disappointed by it. There is no way it's on the same level as New Super Mario Bros U, which I would rate as the best 2D Mario game.

Still, for a gameboy game pretty impressive IMO.

Probably Super Mario Land 2. The levels were unforgettable and unique, especially the Tree Zone level. As a kid, I think I played through that level more than any other in a Mario game.

Super Mario World would be my 2D/nostalgia pick, but Super Mario Galaxy wins outright.

That game is pure joy.

Man I have to think about this.

It's between Mario 64 and Mario World.

World was just such an evolution and was quite long for a simple side scroller....yet it wasn't exactly simple.

But 64 was so revolutionary and frankly is the game any 3D platformer is measured up against.

I voted New Super Mario Bros. U

It is the strongest 2D mario game to date and I much prefer the 2D games to the 3D ones because of higher challenge, more clever secrets, better collectibles, and secret exits.

The best 3D Mario is 3D World or Galazy 2. I'm not a fan of the Mario 64 style at all, Sunshine was just bad, and Galaxy felt like wasted potential.

Yeah, that's a toughie. I enjoy most of the Mario platformers. Even the original holds up well with its pure and basic approach.

For 3d, I can say SMG2 without hesitation.

For 2d, it's a tough choice between SMB3, SMW and SMW2. Probably go with SMW2 on that.

Overall though, I just can't vote lol.

My favorite 2D Mario is Super Mario Bros. 3 (especially the All-Stars version) and my favorite 3D Mario is Super Mario 3D World.

Super Mario 2 is the best Mario game of all time. Its the first appearance of Toad as a playable character. Plus it introduced lots of new characters into the Mario mythology. Shyguys, Birdo, Ninjis and maybe the best bad guy ever in Wart. Plus it had giant mice in shades who was obsessed with bombs.

Honestly this was a hard choice but that Mario 64 won in the end and I LOVE Galaxy and Mario World 3. I mean this poll was like asking ok you can only save one kid and I know you like all three of them but you only save one who will it be.

The Gamecube was the last Nintendo system I ever owned. I played all the Mario games up until that point. My favorite would have to be Super Mario World from the SNES. My best memories of Mario comes from that game. It might have something to do with the fact that the game was a pack in with the system , and I think I had gotten it on my birthday or something like that, and I just remember it as being such an amazing game for me....finished it so many times.

I'd have to split it between a 2D and 3D perspective (as others have).

I'm torn between SMB3 and World for the 2D category; I love both, but probably played World more than 3 in my entire lifetime. I like the visuals of 3 over World, but World had Yoshi while 3 had tanooki suit... it's a tough one. I don't think I could pick one over the other...

For the 3D, Galaxy 2 reigns supreme. Better levels than the original. 3D World comes close, though.

I never got the hate for Sunshine. When that game came out the island was so pretty to look at, the water pack controlled great and it captured a sense of adventure and exploration that no other 3D Mario ever has IMO.

I have quite a few reasons for why I dislike it, but I won't argue the visuals, they looked great.

As for the sense of adventure and exploration, that's actually part of the problem for me. I get why people like that stuff, but that's not what I want from a pure platformer. I like a briskly paced series of obstacle courses, no filler in-between.

Mario 64 kind of started the more adventurous feel, and I could tolerate it, but Sunshine took it too far for me. I was glad when Nintendo scaled it back to pure platforming.

There was a gap between the SNES and the Wii where I just felt Mario was dead lol.

That would make sense why you didn't like it then. It was probably the most "different" Mario platformer ever created and it caused some very divisive opinions.

I eventually got bored of the whole point a to point b Mario's so it was perfect for me. I never liked the look of 3D World either because it seems like it takes the approach of the 2D games except in 3D. I did love SMB3 and SMW but I would rather go back and play those than any of the newer 2D Mario's.

It does seem a bit odd trying to fit Mario Maker into this. Unless we're strictly counting the pre-packed levels, no two people are really playing the same game. It's kind of a random experience. I've had days where I played some of the coolest Mario levels ever, just as I've had days where I played nothing but straight up garbage levels.

At least with the rest of the games we're all largely judging them based on similar experiences.

Yeah, I can understand that man.

3D World is a legit game though. I think it's one of the better Mario titles, but it's definitely pure obstacle course gameplay.

Agreed on the last bit though. The NSMB games are rock solid. Great mechanics, well designed levels, all that... but they lack staying power for me. I finish them once and I never go back. They lack inspiration, they just feel like assembly line Mario games. SMB3 and SMW? I've replayed those games dozens of times (maybe even hundreds) and I'll just never tire of them. I know there is a healthy bit of nostalgia driving that opinion, but truth be told I just think they're more fun to play.

I had to go with the most innovative Mario game, Sunshine. I was quite a big fan of the New Super Mario Bros. series, and I feel like you can't really rank the 3D and 2D games the same way.

3D World is 3rd. Mario 64, then Sunshine, then 3d World. That's for 3d mario. Parts of 3d world are better than Sunshine. Catsuit works a lot like Mario 64.

1. It doesn't. It has play mechanics and assets from SMB, SMB3, SMW and NSMBU. Not the full games and not the SMB2 style stuff.

2. Even if it did it still wouldn't matter in a thread like this.

Yeah, it's difficult to compare Mario maker to other Mario games, or any game that isn't a level editor really, due to the nature of the game.

And yeah I've found myself tired of the NSMB series as well. I really liked the DS game, and actually replayed that one tons of times. I enjoyed NSMB Wii as well, for bringing back the Koopa kids, having a significant grapohical boost and a nicer soundtrack. It's NSMB U that left me incredibly underwhelmed. Just used the Koopa kids again, graphical leap from NSMB Wii to Wii U wasn't as impressive to me from the DS game to the Wii game, soundtrack was almost entirley the same as the Wii game. Also was bothered by how they reused the same world themes yet again in NSMBU (grass, desert, water, ice, swamp, mountain, sky, fire). NSMB Wii reused the themes as well but it was only the second game at that point and they mixed the worlds around so I wasn't as bothered by when the Wii game did it.

Super Mario Bros. 3. Now, I might be biased, since that's my first game ever (started with it when I was 2 years old), but playing it today is still an awesome experience. Game is fucking perfect.

Isn't that a game that they took and just slapped Mario characters on? I like the game as well, but to call it the best Mario game sounds a bit weird, imo.
