I think it goes to Gears of War Ultimate Edition, handily.

As opposed to:

Ouch, them 2D sprites for foliage and sting-worthy aliasing. TLOU is a great game though.

Nathan Drake Collection.

In particular, Uncharted 3. I mean, good jesus, that game looks really damn good. It impressed me back when it came out, and it still does now.

Wind Waker HD is my favorite, and also, in my opinion, the best looking game of all time.

Yeah it's the most dramatic remaster i've seen (technically kind of a remake but w/e) and at times I think it's the best looking game on Wii U. The only thing I don't like about it is when Link's in the shadows, or rather where there's no light source he loses his cel shaded effect, but those moments aren't too frequent.

We looking at remasters this gen? Or all time remasters? Either way, Gears 1 isn't one of them.

I agree with others, The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker wins this. Gears was pretty also though, they did a good job.

Since Black Mesa is a remake that doesn't count, I would go with Homeworld which looks literally decades ahead of it's original incarnation.

Unlike every other game... which uses 2D sprites for foliage.

Nope.

Don't get me wrong. I love the Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. I still love how it looks today.

But the remaster just added Bloom. I dislike how overly bright it looks now. Though 1080p is really nice.

Yeah Black Mesa is definitely among the best remakes.

@R4gn4r0k: Check out the video mate, it added so much more then that, it changed the way we play the game. It gave new comers and fans of the game a new experience for them to enjoy. Thats something not easily achieved and very risky.

Agreed. And to be fair, it was a great looking game to begin with thanks to it's cartoon aesthetic.

Homeworld was a game from 1998 that ended up looking like a game from 2015, quite miraculous.

@R4gn4r0k: The bloom is perfect for WW's style, it makes it feel you're really out on an ocean. The original is too sterile.

Plus it has high res textures, better draw distance, soft shadows, new clouds etc. etc.

Yes, sometimes it fits the game, and it can give it a 'warmer', more tropical look.

On the other hand it's also a reminder for me that Nintendo was still figuring out HD graphics and just turned the Bloom dial all the way up.

Though it can be a great effect, it's way overdone in this remake

Homeworld is a remake I would also consider a standard of how to do remakes right.

But they ported HW 1 to the HW 2 engine, right ? (isn't that kinda like Black Mesa xD)

Wind Waker HD looked good but was knd of underwhelming as a LoZ game. Gears Ulrimate even has quite a few rough edges, glitches, bad servers for online MP, worse than X360 game in some areas.

Me, my favorite is Metro Redux. Tomb Raider would have took first pick if it weren't for a bad radio tower glitch. Resident Evil HD was also pretty good.

@freedomfreak: which one? The audio glitch where the sounds repeat and loop, and or the one where Lara, her hands, the dials, and camera are out of alignment? First time on Difinitive Edition it was just latter but last time I played it was both. If I weren't as experienced of a gamer I never would have figured it out, can't believe they never patched that. Luckily you can find the right frequency via the rumble.

Tomb Raider definitive for best last gen 'tarting up'. Halo 2 probably most accomplished remaster considering what they had to work with and the cut scenes looked amazing, in-game good but not on the same level.

I am going to 'come out' as a big remaster fan. I love it when games I love or games I always wanted to play but didn't get round to it get a current gen remaster. Most of the games I would like to see remastered (Ultima VII as an example) would require a proper remake so will likely never happen.

I know people hate remasters but hey, nobody has a gun at your head forcing you to buy them.

I consider it a recreation, however it is classified as a remaster and as such it's the best looking one there is.

Sounds and textures and models were remade from the ground up. The word says it itself: remade.

A remaster simply polishes up what is there. Perhaps cleans up existing textures. Cleans up existing sound. Support for higher resolutions and FPS.

I personally view it as a recreation as I already said, however it is definitively classified as a remaster regardless of those above things.

This isn't a debate of semantics, this isn't even a debate, Halo 2: Anniversary is the best looking remastered game there is.

You are right: it is a remaster in a way (as the game was not entirely rebuild from the ground up). But I'm also right that it is a remake in a way (as a lot of aspects were indeed remade from the ground up)

So, out of interest, how do you qualify something a remake, a remaster or a recreation ?

Remaster to me is tuning up the existing, bettering it and adding to it, a recreation would be to a more extreme degree, altering game functions. In terms of a remake that would be literally from the ground up, a game remade from no existing content e.g. Resident Evil for GameCube.

You have to remember though outside of audio and graphical advances, Halo 2: Anniversary is mechanically the same exact game it always was and the geometry is the the same as it always was, it only got audio and visual updates. If they would have altered the game mechanics, physics, geometry, AI and so on then I would give it a pass as a real recreation, but it's really just the same game but much prettier.

It's borderline between remaster and recreation in my eyes, but it's labeled as a remaster.

Yeah, if Halo 2 Anniversary is considered a remake, than Gears should be too.

But for the sake of the argument, let's just say both are remasters.

Yeah, it's borderline. Same with Gears.

I was also thinking about that. First I was like: No, Halo 2 is a remake. But it does still use the same engine, AI, map lay-out, etc... On the other hand it has completely new visuals, cutscenes, audio, ...

It's a tough one, but let's just say both are remasters.

I'd also give it to Gears.

They even went and made a few new cutscenes.

And the game looks really good compared to how it looked back in 2006.

UC3 and it's not even close, the lighting is so good it still gives me shivers. Honestly it looks better than 80% of XBone games this gen.

Gears looks like a sad joke next to it lol.
