Poll: Best Fighting Reboot? MK 2011 vs KI 2013 vs Soulcalibur VI (23 votes)

Mortal Kombat (2011; WB/Netherrealm Studios; PS3/360/PC) 30%
Killer Instinct (2013; MS/Rare/Iron Galaxy/Double Helix; XBOX ONE/PC) 39%
Soulcalibur VI (2018; Namco Bandai; XBOX ONE/PS4/PC) 13%
Just want to see the results... 17%

In the fighting game world, I can think of only three reboots in recent memory that stood out.

MK9 - After several 3D fighters not so greatly received by gamers

Killer Instinct - After a long absence since KI2/KI Gold

Soulcalibur VI - After the criticism of SCV (and maybe SCIV and III?)

Killer Instinct gets my vote. That game has turned out so damn good. Definitely hope to see a sequel for it get made for Scarlett.

Really enjoy Mortal Kombat 11 as well.

Soul Calibur VI seems quite good also but I really haven’t played enough of it to make a final verdict. Really should play some more of it again soon.

The only one I've played was Killer Instinct (2013) so here it goes for my vote.

MK11 followed by KI. Never liked Soul Calibur.

I've played games in those franchises however none of the ones mentioned so...

I voted for, I just want to see the results.

i'd say Killer Instinct.

Only thing I didn't like was the auto-combos patched in.

Otherwise very fun, colorful punchy art-direction, fantastic animations, creative moves and a banging soundtrack.

MK11 I really disliked the animation, the community was full of Russians using to get auto-combos and it's launch was extremely poor quality on PC, which took them almost 2 months to fix. The game price, significantly higher than KI.

Soulcalibur VI is pretty fun, good if you just don't have much time to play the genre which demands a lot of if you're playing online. The woman clothes fall off also, which upset Polygon.

Not a reboot. Takes place before 3, as does 5.

The killer instinct reboot was absolutely fantastic. The fighting system is perfect imo. Still play it today.

I never really considered it a reboot. Partly because at the time of release, I didn't consider the series condition at the time, and even now as I look back, was Street Fighter harmed THAT bad by those cruddy EX games, given that continuous ports of the series (which were generally well received) still filled the void? Like saying Mario needs a reboot because of Mario is Missing.

Well, to be fair, there is the "soft reboot" (God of War '18 for instance), where the continuity continues, but is different in gameplay. But still, SFIV is not a reboot.

SC VI ruined the game with one mechanic. So I'll go with MK11.

Going into this thread I was thinking it was more about the return of fighting general overall.

I thought SF4 kicked it off last gen.

I see there are many people confused when it comes to Mortal Kombat. TC is talking about MK reboot from 2011, not Mortal Kombat 11... I voted "blank", because i couldn't decide between MK9 and KI3. SCVI is pretty much a "meh" for me. As someone who played all the the entries in the series starting with the SoulEdge in arcades, it's pretty much going downhill with each new entry... The last one i genuinely enjoyed was probably SoulCalibur 2.

Killer Instinct. Don't like the addition of auto combos though.

MK9 was pretty great as well.

...still better then the "macro comboes" plague i encountered in MKX on PC. TBH, "macro fighters" were still not as bad as these assholes using the Alt+Tab exploit (for those who game on consoles, it's kinda like the infamous "lag switch" cheaters on consoles), let alone these (mostly russians) with speed hacks and shit... Luckily i played/got most out of MKX in its "hey day" when all/most of the bugs were fixed with tons of online players. Last time i played the game was 4 months ago and it was such a disaster that i didn't bother playin it since then, eventhough i'm/was just a few hours from getting all the achievements...

None.

Samurai Showdown is the correct answer.

@madsnakehhh: Favorite fighting game series. Don’t let people lie, it was always better than Soul Calibur except for that dark period following IV.

Need to pick up the latest one.

KI really kicked it up a notch this gen. Best fighter of the generation, easily.

Mortal Kombat, I have played 9 and 10 but not 11, but it is worth mentioning that MK9 has created a sustained momentum, can't say the same about the others yet.

@Sevenizz:

Not for me, I mean it's definitely a "breath of fresh air" when compared to the current competition, but compared to it's previous iterations, it's a farcry in the awesome region to me. The original and the sequel had more going for it, even with the sequel cutting out some of the content that was present in the original (ala: humiliations, and "proper" stage fatalities) it still had more going for it than this rebooted iteration got going for it. I mean the complete lack of No Mercies, Shadow Ultras, Humiliations, 5th enders, and that pathetic excuse for Ultimates is just down right lackluster on the dev part, and to even include a character like Hisako was just like adding salt to an already deep wound (because I would consider myself a hardcore fan of the series). In many ways it was/is a great game (it definitely have the best netcode of ANY fighter out now), but to an hardcore fan like myself, in many ways, this iteration did definitely "drop the ball" in some areas.
