Call of Duty 3 is massively underrated. The core concept behind its multiplayer was fantastic [HD Battlefield 1942, how can you hate that?] and, while I may be only one of a few who gives a shit about this, COD3 was the only game in the entire franchise that had even remotely realistic weapon handling.
As far as the story goes; COD1 and COD2 didn't actually have any kind of real plot or story at all. That may be for the better, but COD3 was one of the only COD games I've ever played where it felt like it actually had really recognizable, distinguishable characters and it felt like you were getting places throughout the campaign.
Black Ops 1 is probably better in this regard. WAW would be up there, but I thought the American marines were extremely hard to tell apart from one another, so their actions felt almost completely inconsequential on that level.
