Besides children, are there any older "new" Nintendo fans?

My friend and I were talking about E3 the other day (he's a big Nintendo fan) and I said to him that I didn't care about Nintendo at all.

He then said, "Well, you didn't grow up with Nintendo, so that's why you don't care."

I raised my eyebrows. It is true, I didn't grow up with Nintendo. I grew up with PC games like Half-Life, Doom, and Quake. I remain a huge fan of PC gaming to this day.

I thought about it: Besides people who grew up with Nintendo games as children, are there any older people who have suddenly become Nintendo fans in later life? Between all of the gamers that I know, the only people who are Nintendo fans are people who grew up with Nintendo as children and are still fans of Nintendo because of the nostalgic value that their games (both old and new) offer. Given Nintendo's orientation towards children, it's perhaps unsurprising to see that few adults would embrace Nintendo games in later life (the Wii and its casual games not included).

Your thoughts on the subject?

Intesting, I'd probably say that's true, they really do gear towards bringing in new kids and trying to keep older fans interested. I grew up on Nintendo, moved away from then for back to back gens, then got back into them this gen. Don't know anyone who didn't play nintendo back then who suddenly started either.

Nostalgia is a big factor as to why you'll like gaming in general.

I grew up with Nintendo, but also with everything else. I started playing games when I was about 3 on the PC and on the SNES. My friend has a NES and a Genesis. With the exception of the Dreamcast, Jaguar, Virtual Boy, and Sega 32X I've pretty much owned everything to release after the SNES. As much as I loved a lot of the games on the NES, SNES, and N64 I've never been a big fan of Nintendo. I enjoyed a lot of their games but had other favorites on other consoles. I lost all interest in almost all of their games since they went 3D. The only thing Nintendo makes that I care about anymore is Fire Emblem. I'm not nostalgic at all if I like something old it's because it was good then and still is, I wouldn't keep buying new things just because it has some characters I used to know. So unlike a lot of the older Nintendo fans I'm not effected by that.

I grew up with Nintendo and I'm not a fan of them anymore. Not since N64. Although, I think the DS is pretty cool. I'll play that from time to time.

Anyways, I'm sure there are some older "new" Nintendo fans.

Why is the Wii not included?? Why would children not be growing up with the Wii/WiiU and Nintendo be creating new fans?

edit: totally missed the question

Define "older"  if you talking teens that are "too cool for school" then they are hardly getting any.  I know plenty of adults that jumped in with the wii and love it.  You'd never call them "gamers" though.

I had a Megadrive, then a PS1, then a Gamecube, so I didn't grow up with them really, I only remember loving Mario Kart Double Dash and never really completing most of the other Nintendo games I had, I'd honestly say the Wii made me like Nintendo more, just by doing something completely different and retaining a sense of fun in games whilst MS and Sony went off to focus on "teh hardcore" market.

Well, don't know about others but I deff. am a fan due to nostalgia reasons and also because of the consistent quality of their games, the dedication to make genuine "fun", polished and well-made games and also because they don't conform to the gaming industry trends. (which is both, good and bad)

But I don't consider myself a "fanboy" as I don't like everything they make and I also question some game design decisions, hardware capabilities, market positioning and such.

It's deff. a good theme for discussion but I don't think you will get the "in-depth" explanation you're looking for here.

To clarify, was it the same time FF7 was released on the PS1?

Good question. I don't know anyone like that.

I know people who have some kind of Nintendo history in the 90s, they have a Wii but it's mostly either for nostalgia or their gf's. "Eh, why not, a cheap secondary console with old classics, kinda fun, btw did you hear about the new GTA?"

For reference I'm talking early 20s and above.

There are, although their consoles are marketed toward children, my friend's daughters like the pokemon and the mario stuff. Personally I grew up with them from the NES days and I don't care about them at all now.

Of course. You just don't like any of the genres that Nintendo makes games for. It happens. Some people only play FPS games, sims, or MMO's.

No, I haven't been a Nintendo fan since Pokemon Silver/Gold on the Gameboy. The only good franchise they have is Metroid and they haven't done anything worthwhile with that in quite a while. I don't actively dislike them like I do Sony, but Nintendo just hasn't aged well IMO.

I had a Sega Genesis so no Snes. I didn't like the N64 as a kid and got a PS1 instead. Only played one game on the GBC and it's pretty obvious which one. Never touched my Gamecube and sold it for an OG Xbox. What else can I say? I grew up with it, hated it.

Been gaming since Generation 2, got bored with Nintendo after GC, but rejuvenated my love for them after E3.

Thinking of picking up a WiiU and maybe later, a PS4.
