Graphics (from Greek graphia) are visual presentations on some surface, such as a wall, canvas, computer screen, paper, or stone to brand, inform, illustrate, or entertain.

Therefore they are subjective. Brand, Inform, illustrate, entertain.

I could say I think Kingdom hearts 2's graphics do those 4 things better then all this gens games and who could prove me wrong. Its opinion.

Oh, and graphics aren't subjective.

Art style is.

If they are not objective, it means they are measurable. How you "measure" graphics? Example, prove me that KZ3 looks better (or worse) than Gears of War 3.

Preference in graphics is subjective, quality is hardly subjective. You may prefer one style over another but beyond the majority will agree on what are the best looking games.

Maybe, but at the end of the day we still can see with our own eyes what looksgood and what doesn't. When it comes to graphics for gaming this is all that really matters.

You do know there are alot more games on PC which destroy console games graphically? Even the multiplats look better on the PC then on consoles so your point is moot. 1080p and higher resolution > 720p and lower. 60fp and higher > 30fps and lower.

Graphics arent everything, im more interested in POLISHED graphics and gameplay, and when i say polished i dont mean the most detailed current gen look, but no screen tearing, no extreme jaggies, and graphical glitches. I recently started looking at olde PS2 screenshots of some of my favorite games and although outdated, they were still a breath of fresh air in the right direction and still look impressive.

its the reason i can play PS1's MidiEvil and enjoy it...sure it looks blocky as a MoFo! but its fun and looks decent for its time, the fun factor trumps the look IMO.

look at resolution, fps, textures, things onscreen, animations, lighting, facial features, etc.

However in terms of GeoW and KZ where they both technically are similar and graphic settings are locked b/c its on consoles, it comes to art style preference. Which video game universe do you find aesthetically more pleasing. But compare say a DS game and Crysis then yes there is a huge difference and it cannot be argued that they graphically are the same. However one can make the claim that stylistically they prefer the cartoonish look of mario over the realism of crysis

If I knew the ins and outs of each game and the engine they use, what techniques they use, then maybe I could. Tech wise graphics are measureable. Art wise, it's what the developer chose to go to. I prefer the forest/jungles of Bad Company 2 over the wastelands/homeworld of whatever that other faction is of Killzone 2.

Graphics (texture sizes, poly counts, effects) aren't subjective
Art Styl3 is subjective.
Example: Sombeody think that Borderlands "looks" better then Uncharted 2 because he realy likes the cell shaded design, but Uncharted 2 has better graphics because it's got bigger poly counts, bigger textures, better effects etc.

Interesting claim. GS moderator Teufelhuhn (maybe you've seen him around) is a graphic programmer, and this is what he said:

Graphics are the most subjective thing on the planet. Even the technical side is hugely subjective. What's better, a model with 10,000 triangles and a 1024x1024 texture or a model with 5,000 triangles and a 2048x2048 texture? What's better, having HDR or having higher resolution? In the ends it's all just a bunch of tradeoffs, hacks, and fakes, and the visual quality will come down to how well the artists can use those hacks to make things look good.

Best art style is subjective, most aesthetically pleasing is subjective, but most technologically advanced is not really subjective and almost completely objective. It all depends on what aspect of graphics we are talking about here :)

Like others have said, they are to a certain extent. For example: Imo, SMG2 is one of the best looking games this gen; not because of it's technical prowess, but because of it's beautiful art-style.

Artstyle is definately subjective. Technical aspects aren't.

So unless you take graphics to be a purely artistic term, then no, they are not. In the VG industry graphics tends to include the technical and the artistic side.

actually theyre not,

people including this site, and 99% of all other sites, misuse the term.

graphics solely refers to the technical aspects behind the visuals, for example the texture resolution or the lighting.

it is measurable and objective

it has nothing to do with how a game 'looks' to you or art, or the visuals, or your emotional opinion.

Could be argued that it looks better than this? :P
1
