Ark Dev: X1X is Phenomenal, 50% more powerful than PS Pro

60fps not possible on PS Pro

Studio Wildcard’s Jesse Rapczak was featured in an interview with Geoff Keighley during the YouTube E3 2017 Live Show, where he announced that ARK: Survival Evolved would be targeting 60FPS on the platform while that is “not possible” for PS4 Pro. It should be noted that he probably means at 1080P or higher resolution since PS4 Pro users can already choose to run the game at 60FPS by dropping the resolution to 720P (1280×720).

It’s amazing. It’s basically like Epic settings on PC, we’re targeting 60FPS. We recently introduced variable frame rate, but on Xbox One X with the extra horsepower, you’ll notice less variation in your frame rate even in busy situations.

The PS4 Pro also has improved frame rate when compared to PS4. Before the XB1X, it was the best console version of ARK, but it’s hard to argue with that 6 teraflops [laughs]. Having the same frame rate in our game isn’t really possible, there are a couple reasons for that: the XB1X not only has a faster CPU than PS4 Pro, it also has a lot more RAM. I’d say there’s a 50% performance difference.

The Xbox One X is great. Everything from the devkits is so much easier to develop for. It’s faster in all sorts of ways, especially for us developers it’s easier to iterate. In terms of horsepower, it’s just phenomenal, it is expensive but when you think about the price for a similarly specced PC, it doesn’t unreasonable at all to me.

Overall, the quality is going up a lot. It would have been easy to say, hey, let’s just take the Xbox One version and crank up the resolution, but actually we’ve brought over some enhanced effects from PC. We’ve actually got volumetric lighting and clouds on Xbox One X, higher draw distance that is equal to PC’s Epic settings, higher resolution textures…

What say you SW? Are you just as pumped for this beast, the X1X? It looks like they are delivering on the performance they promised. It appears developers are loving this new console. Hopefully this carries over into most of the games.

Sure wish more games would have showed us that power. Metro and Anthem looked great, so did Forza7 in some shots. I don't get the indie filler though, you don't show 2D sidescrollers and such when you're demoing the most powerful console in the world lol.

@Epak_: As usual MS gets criticized for a non issue. Spencer even specifically stated they picked the games to show so they can show a wide variety of games.

Also considering Sony has marketing deals with all the major upcoming AAAs, they couldnt really show those off but they will look better on Xbox too.

Luckily most of those issues have been addressed on PC with patches. Runs awesome on Xbox One S.

When you go on YouTube and see the PC version of this game running at 40-50fps maxed out with an overclocked GTX1080 and Intel i7 at 1080p it becomes laughable that Scorpio can hit 4k60...

It's either running at ultra low settings or they've done a heck of a lot of optimisation work...... The latter will benefit ALL platforms....

@kvally: The power difference is actually over 50% since MS was able to free up an extra gig of ram. Which is massive. Xbox One X is probably 60% more powerful then its competitor.

@scatteh316: Actually you're wrong. Ram is needed to make games not only run smoother but faster as well. Data transfer is a huge part of graphic processing. So I don't know what planet you're on. But a PC has 5GB of ram verses 9GB of ram that is a huge performance gap difference. Lol

wow... just wow didn't know ram increases processing power! in that case my gpu's 8gb of GDDR5X along with my 16gb of ram makes my pc 2x faster than xbox one x!!!!!

cpu is probably around 10-15% faster than PS4 pro's cpu and its gpu is around 40% faster than ps4 pro's gpu.

You take any GPU and double the memory and it'll still kick out the same frame rate in GPU bound situations.

I agree, having every game being upgraded is a massive bonus. People with 4k sets will see the biggest improvement in games though, I have a enthusiast level pc and 4k gaming at the high end is unbelievable, Forza Horizon 3 is a generation difference with 4k 60fps, X1X looks to do this.

Probably I would care if they had actually shown some of that super power during the conference.

why do people insist on pulling random numbers straight out of their ass when comparing pieces of hardware? i'm a novice at best when it comes to understanding the intricacies of computer hardware and computational capability and even i know it's almost never as easy as assigning a single number or percentage to any such comparison. it really is ridiculous and shows the depth of your ignorance.

and i'll say again: even if it were true that the difference in output is 50% in favor of the x1x none of the games looked to prove that difference.

If Pro is stuck at 1080p or 1440p then 50% extra isn't enough to get the same game at the same settings to native 4k.

A game on Pro would have to be around the 1800p level for the 50% to get to native 2160p.

The problem though is the games and the price. $500 (plus tax and games) is expensive for another console when many people are happy with their PS4 or Xbox One, are happy with their PC, just bought the Pro, or simply don't want to spend that much money on a new console. All of the games shown are on PC and several of the games shown at E3 will be on the PS4 too at some point. I don't see it attracting any PC gamers when they can just buy the game. The people here who are doing cartwheels to bash Sony, Nintendo, and even PC gamers are the people who this console is intended for. The hardcore Xbox fans and the hardcore gamers who want a strong console. Plus I didn't see enough triple A exclusives that only Xbox would be getting that would convince people to think Xbox is far superior to its competitors.

I don't think it really convinced people to choose this over PC or convince people to pick it over Spiderman, God of War, Uncharted 4, Horizon, ect. I don't hate the console and I don't mind if it succeeds, but I don't think it's going to make a big difference in sales. But they did say it was a premium console from the start. Their biggest money maker will still be the One S as I've always said.

i think it's safe to say that x1x is to ps4pro as og ps4 is to xbone? that seems to make sense to me without getting into concrete numbers that make little sense anyway.

the only substantial thing that X1X has over the Ps4 Pro is a much larger pool of memory for vram for 4k assets.
