Poll Are you mostly a handheld/mobile gamer or tv/monitor gamer? (65 votes)

100% tv/monitor 58%
75% tv/monitor, 25% handheld/mobile 32%
50/50! 5%
75% handheld/mobile / 25% tv/monitor 5%
100% handheld/mobile 0%

I would say currently I'm 75% tv/monitor. Maybe even more than that. I really enjoy playing games on my nice TV or on my ultra wide monitor. The new consoles have great power and the visuals are stunning! With handheld, I feel like your experience will vary. Although I do enjoy my Switch for those moments I can't access a a TV, most of the time I'm not on the go. And when I am on the go, I'm not really looking to stopping and playing my Switch randomly lol. Although there are perfect situations for the Switch like if you're on a plane or something. But overall, more of a 'stationary' gamer lol.

How about you, SW? Are you mostly a handheld/mobile gamer or tv/monitor gamer?

"tv/monitor, 25% handheld/mobile (Your vote) 50%" is the correct choice I'm part of that group.

99% TV/Monitor

I use the Switch as a handheld a few times a year when I am traveling. (If I even use it at all during those trips)

75% TV+Monitor. But I'd probably be more like 50/50 if I had a handheld that played more of my desktop games...

75% Handheld 25% TV over the past 4 years I'd say.

My interest in gaming has also wained significantly. I have to set time aside to game on a TV. 5am to 10am time frame. Handheld allows me more opportunity to game on the fly or while we're watching TV in the evening, at a hotel, plane etc... It fits better with my on the go lifestyle.

Its kinda like I used to prioritize gaming time in my life but lately I use it as a side car to other activities. I still love it but don't have the same needs.

PC gamer first and foremost. Always have been, always will be.

Love my 3DS though, used it more than the PS4/XboxOne/Switch.

I used to play time wasting mobile games but it just got tiring of logging in. It was mostly idle style games or these battle types like Star Wars, Turtles, Disney, where you had characters and they'd fight a handful of enemies at once, turn based stuff. I found other interests and just don't play that stuff anymore.

I'll always be a TV gamer, especially now that the gap is closing between TV and monitor. I've tried monitors but they don't provide the resolution or size that I prefer. TV's are now steadily providing 60-120fps models with 4K options. Within the next few years once 120fps/4K is standard on TV's, monitors will be obsolete, still pumping out low 1080p at 120fps+. It's nice to see that TV companies have caught up with gaming needs.

@SolidGame_basic: lol... They don't speak well to my theory that there's a growing need for portability, but it also kinda affirms that I'm looking at the hobby from another perspective making devices like steam deck all the more special.

"TV folk" are hunting ps5s and xsx... I am not one of those people atm.

@nnoyinghusband: I also do like TV's allot, but the problem is that if you much prefer to game on PC like I do, TV's just don't have as clear of text and they can be too big sometimes for close up non gaming computer use and also I like to game using a keyboard and mouse most of the time and that can be too big on a TV at that distance, I know you can use wireless but I prefer wired keyboards and mice. That being said while yes TV's are catching up and will get even better in the future, I don't think you are aware that monitors are also not just 1080p 120 fps capable only anymore. There are models like This and This or This or this (as the consoles are not doing 4K 120 FPS on any AAA games anyway)

I think if you game only on console TV's are great, I game on both a monitor for my Main gaming PC and a TV for my secondary gaming PC, I don't like gaming on console at all (PC is just so much better). I like gaming on both (Monitor and TV) I like the size of the TV, but the monitor is easier to use as a general use computer that I both use as a regular computer and a gaming PC.

I will say though TV's are a much better value price vs size and specs, that is for sure.

Almost 100% monitor. On very rare occasion will play the Switch in handheld mode, but that's like killing a few minutes while waiting on something else.

Never the TV, been years since that was my go-to. Good to know that some TVs have gotten back around to being proper gaming displays in recent years, but just not interested at the moment.

Don't be so pessimistic... System wars represents various people with various backgrounds arguing why their singular perspective is correct... An impossibility. Just go with it and don't take it too serious.

At this time, I play my Switch on handheld for as my parents took my 4K TV that I bought because they are too cheap to buy a new TV when we moved months ago. Until they buy a new TV, handheld mode is the only way to play with my Switch.

Before we moved, I mostly played my Switch on docked mode eventhough I have yet to see the 60 fps that I see on Youtube videos on my 4K TV. However, I like what I am seeing at 1080p and I would like to see how Switch games will look like at the higher 4K resolution and viewing them from a OLED screen.

I think after extensive experience with 4K resolution and playing games on a OLED screen, that I will never want to go back to SD graphics found on the Wii and 3DS again.

This poll not looking good for Steam Deck.

The Steam Deck won't do well. Right now, you just have a bunch of anti-Nintendo gamers and disappointed Nintendo fans hyping it up. But it won't sell as well because what is the audience?

  • Steam users? But they have Steam on their PC. Why would they leave a system that they can literally customize to their liking, just to play on a handheld?
  • PC gamers who want something on the go but hate the Switch? They have phones, tablets, and laptops... Three portable options right there, just saying.

In order to do well, they'd have to have exclusives for it. Like something you can't get on your phones or the Switch. Yet Valve hasn't made a game in like over a decade.

I can appreciate that I'm perhaps in a very small minority, but I don't subscribe to any of what you're saying. I'm their direct audience I feel...

I want what the switch offers but with all my games. Not some, all... They're all exclusives to me... On the go exclusives. Don't consider myself any one kind of gamer, certainly not a pc gamer though I have a catalog of games non steam from a gaming laptop I used to try to get into pc gaming.

I don't own a switch for the exclusives. I only like a couple of them. I own it for the portability and the chance that games I love will come out for it. Currently playing Ninja Gaiden Collection for example.

OMG this guys so spot on he shoulda showed up in gabe pitch meeting for this an been like dude we can't do this sir.

I am the direct audience for this thing i owned the game gear the ps vita all the crap hand helds except lynx and nomad...

anyway this thing is an abomination its basically the nomad for steam big bulky uses 8 batteries for 2 hours. This is worse than game gear. Its the Gabe Nomad IMO. Don't compare to this to a game gear that had great exclusive games on it that weren't on genesis this is pure steam system.

@TheEroica: You just stated why the steam deck is going to fail, it caters to a small minority of people. It's gonna crash and burn just like the steam boxes and the other portable PC machines have.

@vfighter: perhaps? Tough to say who it'll resonate with yet. The wiiU was an embarrassment of a console that had the exact same franchises switch does. Nintendo mighty franchises couldn't save it.... But switch, with the same games sells at record pace.... Why?

Nintendo merging their handheld and console market? Gamers who have wanted to play their games seemlessly on the go?

Maybe I'm the minority in this, but switch deck answers the questions I've been asking since I bought the switch....

"can I play all my games on the go?"

Yes, now I can.
