Poll Are PC graphics really that impressive anymore? (101 votes)

Yes, they still shock and awe 35%
Not really, they look better but not mind-blowing 58%
Maybe, I'm unsure 2%
Otherr 5%

Remember Crysis? When that game came out I upgraded my rig, I just was jaw dropped at how the pc could pull that level of technical showcase.

But now... I see a game like God of War and Horizon, and what am I missing? The Witcher 3 ultra settings? Yawn?

Sorry, big pc gamer here. Love my strategy games, but it's not that baggy anymore.

Now it's more graphics and performance enhancements. Certain features are left trailing (HDR is catching up), but higher refresh rates as well as resolution really help. That isn't even to mention that we're now dipping into realtime ray-tracing, which is a huge step, those still heavily limited by the 1st-gen GPUs.

I will use my PC over my Pro, due to consistent 60fps with highest PC settings. I'll be upgrading to a 4k panel this year.

there certainly isn't as big of a gap as there was 10 years ago between console and PC graphics, but I think that is mostly a function of game visuals advancing to the point where its harder to see the differences (things like improved shadows, texture resolution and anti-aliasing).

I think the best looking multiplats on PC still beat out the best looking console exclusives on a technical level, but its gotten to the point where graphics debates are too subjective to take seriously. there is no defacto "graphics king" these days like there was in 2007 with Crysis (no matter how aggressively fanboys of any given game or platform insist otherwise)

performance, flexibility and niche exclusives are what in my eyes make PC gaming the best option available to those who have the money and patience to learn how to take advantage of their gaming rigs

Not just about graphics, it's all about performance and technology of PC mostly focus on. PC technology is evolving, Console technology is static. Games nowadays are made with the console, and their limited technology, first in mind and then ported to PC which is technologically well in advance. That's the way things have been heading for ages. Technology in general has lately moved more towards smaller, cooler, more efficient, and more versatile rather than bigger and faster. However, Crysis was the exception to the rule more than anything. Very few games had such high hardware requirements for the highest settings for demanding graphics.

Lately, things have grown stagnant because consoles are such a heavy focus for publishers but still, PC will always be ahead of the curve over consoles and will still look better then their console counterparts.

Voted: Not really, they look better but not mind-blowing

No not really. I remember how everyone was losing it over Witcher 3 on ultra. Meh.

I think a lot of it has to do with shitty lcd monitors. They just look like shit compared to a nice 4k OLED

If you mean PC graphics on their own merit, then hell yes. Graphics have come so far since I was a kid it's mind boggling, and PC is at the forefront.

If you mean relative to consoles, then no. The power gap is growing, from recent gens, yet the diminishing PERCEPTIBLE returns mean the gap in end user experience is shrinking IMO. Hell, the Switch looks pretty good if you arent a total graphics whore

@xantufrog: Yeah, graphics are slowly plateauing in a purely awestruck sense. It's the nitty-gritty details that make a difference now. Realtime ray-tracing will be the new thing once the next-next-gen GPUs hit, and consoles will likely hit a milder version of those GPUs.

For me, nowadays, it's purely performance. Slight FPS dips (even 60-50) actually jar me a little.

I wouldn't say there's a mind-blowing difference. Some games have extra graphical features and you can get higher resolutions, but the real benefit is being able to set your performance level.

@xantufrog: I do the same for exclusives. It's why I still have my Pro and Switch. PC for everything else, but it is damn expensive. My bro and I are debating going to the 2080ti, even though we both settled on hitting the 2080.

Obviously PC is capable of better graphics, but I do think console graphics are good too. The problem with console games a lot of the time is the shit frame rate. So, while games like H:ZD, GoW, Uncharted 4, etc. definitely look good, they run like shit. 30fps is not good, has never been good, and never will be good.

Graphics are stabilizing and people cannot handle that reality.

PS: Some people foolishly keep professing that 30fps is bad when its not.

The percentage is stupidly low in terms of any modern game. I play at 60fps, and even that is low in terms of PC gaming.

You will think after 609 times you will at least get a slight vibe that everyone gets your sentiment.

I threw some screenshots in the other thread, but here. Witcher 3 vanilla does have some issues; some low res textures, and the color palette is a bit pale. But with mods, it's glorious.

And this goes double for me here as well. With Xbox Play Anywhere, I'm really glad MS is bringing their games to PC and that's as much as I can give credit for. When it comes to playing PS4/Switch exclusive games in 30fps, it's just one of those things you gotta turn the 30fps brains off in order to just have with the exclusive game. But of course, as long as 30fps stays "locked" I can work with that.

I think the biggest advantage (some) PCs have over consoles nowadays is frame-rate. But image quality/resolution isn't that much better, especially with XB1 X etc.

But I expect next gen consoles will be much improved in the CPU department, so the gap will probably shrink again.

I really think the advantage PC has is more about playing the same or slightly better graphics than console games at 60 or more FPS with ultrawide support - *and* at higher resolutions like 1440-2160 vertical.

Even newer games are starting to really choke on vanilla PS4 and X1, so much that a Pro or X1X are required for games like Monster Hunter World to be played at 60fps on console. With a decent rig, you can basically guarantee 60 fps for every game.

Not really. Games like Horizon Zero Dawn show just what optimization on consoles can do for a cheap box.

Now that said...I truly believe the next Crysis event in PC gaming will be Cyberpunk 2077.

The gameplay trailer they showed WILL NOT look like that on current gen consoles even the One X.

Next gen consoles perhaps. But even then on PC, it’ll be like the old days where to get the full experience you’ll need a current $3000 rig with all the latest and greatest parts.

It will be in the coming years when the progression of change is decreased combined with optimisation.

When PC devs are forced to optimise to get better visuals there will be a greater difference.

Why on earth would you play at 30fps with a GTX 1070? Aside from the shit console ports as mentioned earlier.

Firstly you asked if played games at 30fps on PC and the fact is some games are simply locked to 30fps which makes the answer blatantly obvious to anyone who games on PC. Besides that, I am human and as a human I have this incredible ability to adapt to minor things like framerates. You may need to upgrade to human status ;)

Well, you obviously don't care much about quality or truly take advantage of the PC platform. That is fine. As long as you are happy... Although it is hard to tell by your avatar. hehe :)

Its obvious you always feel the need to profess you hatred for 30fps but still game on consoles. :)

You will think after 609 times you will at least get a slight vibe that everyone gets your sentiment.

You just have to laugh at him at he states consoles are shit because not all of its games are 60fps, but is "forced" to play them when he is most certainly not lol.

If I want to play the exclusives, I am forced to play them on console. That is the problem. I will gladly play them on PC.

Cue the music

Why on earth would you play at 30fps with a GTX 1070? Aside from the shit console ports as mentioned earlier.

Firstly you asked if played games at 30fps on PC and the fact is some games are simply locked to 30fps which makes the answer blatantly obvious to anyone who games on PC. Besides that, I am human and as a human I have this incredible ability to adapt to minor things like framerates. You may need to upgrade to human status ;)

I know.
