Nintendo Switch exclusive Animal Crossing: New Horizons is an enormous sales success.

It dominated the UK boxed game chart - and sold triple the amount of boxed copies of Bethesda's multi-platform Doom Eternal, which had longer on sale.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the second biggest launch on Nintendo Switch ever, behind Pokémon Sword and Shield. But if you count those games' totals separately, New Horizons is actually top.

It is easily the largest release in the Animal Crossing franchise to date, with more than triple the launch sales of 3DS incarnation New Leaf. (In fact, as GamesIndustry.biz noted, it managed a launch sales total bigger than all other Animal Crossing releases combined.)

And all of this is without digital sales numbers, which Nintendo will likely comment on in due course.

Damn.. all this talk about Animal Crossing makes me want to get it, even though I don't really see the fun in it. But kudos to Nintendo for another big hit. And sorry to @ghosts4ever for the news.

Can you buy Animal Crossing digitally? No idea if switch has a store.

Been tempted on trying AC to be honest, never played it in the past and looks like a chill experience. On the other hand I'm pretty sure Doom is fantastic but right now I can't get excited by it. I've enjoyed 2016, it was shallow and repetitive but fun. Just not feeling it right now.

I don't be see the hype in animal crossing but know many who play it. I'm just not into endless games like that great sales though.

Animal Crossing has a TON of buzz on social media. (Ninja's wife, Brie Larson, Lil Nas X to name a few) It's kinda crazy to see. There's also 5x more people watching Animal Crossing on Twitch vs Doom.

The ultra violent shooter genre is pretty played out at this point. This board is just more evidence of niche gamers being niche.

Have to buy multiple copies due to one save only. Very smart, Nintendo. Next Zelda will be the same.

Not surprising at all. Animal Crossing is a pretty big selling franchise, the Switch is a hot system, and it’s definitely the type of game that a lot of people want to pass the time with given the current situation.

Kiddy games rule.

A number of stores in my area are sold out. These are stores which have been open and remain open throughout this debacle engulfing the world. The numbers should be impressive.

This Covid-19 incident has kind of helped this game's sales massively. Its the perfect game for when you're cooped up somewhere with nothing to do. Since my daughter is out of school for a month, she's been really enjoying it and so have I. That said, both Doom: Eternal & Animal Crossing: New Horizons have been great purchase but Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the ideal for a relaxing game.

Well that makes sense. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a fleshed out game that will get lots of longevity out of one's enjoyment of their purchase, and by design Animal Crossing is intended for the long-run.

Doom Eternal may be a sweet FPS game, but I'm certain most will play it once and then move on.

People are going to be playing New Horizons well after people move on from Doom.

Got it for my kids and local co-op is fun. Also play the game a ton at night after they go asleep. Then with what we're faced with currently in the world, Animal Crossing helps me mentally decompress.

@uninspiredcup: This. The game's core demographic are adult women. The same core demographic who routinely buy The Sims. Social sims are one of the most popular genres among female gamers. Especially now in the COVID-19 climate, which greatly benefits social sims like Animal Crossing and The Sims.

Completely out of the blue my little sis asked me whether I bought Animal Crossing because she heard about it and wanted to play it too. She has her own copy now and I don't think she even knows yet that we'll be able to visit each other later.

It's the first time I got to experience an Animal Crossing game with someone else and it's a nice feeling.

I also just installed Doom Eternal. They are two games that go very well together because they're so different.

Man, I'm going to miss this crossover when the internet inevitably moves on.

This to be honest. Forums don't show the whole picture unless they're huge social media sites like Reddit or Twitter. Even then Twitter isn't really a forum, but it is technically the Internet, so I sort of count it.

It's what Steam fanboys fail to realize as well. People don't care about EGS vs Steam, they just care about a PC platform to play games. They'll download EGS for a game they want. Now spending money on it, outside of Fortnite, is something that Epic has to work on.

I haven't had a Nintendo since Wii, and they have a notoriously poor online service so...yes. I legitimately wondered if so many had bought Animal Crossing physically because it's not available digitally. Might have been a Nintendo policy, might have had something to do with storage...

Battle Angel Alita is a Japanese cyberpunk manga series and anime OVA from the early '90s. In the early 2000s, James Cameron brought the rights to make a Hollywood movie adaptation, but it was in development hell for nearly two decades. Cameron eventually produced Alita: Battle Angel and released it in early 2019.

Alita was released just weeks before Captain Marvel, and both movies drew comparisons because they have female protagonists. Captain Marvel star Brie Larson made some comments about white male critics which offended the alt-right, so they attacked Captain Marvel and supported Alita instead. The irony is that Alita is more diverse than Captain Marvel (Alita has a Latina lead), yet the alt-right somehow made Alita out to be their "anti-SJW" movie. Strange stuff.
