Analyst: PS4Pro Is A Marketing Gimmick. XboxOneX A Real Upgrade.

The PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X are conceptually very similar systems- functionally, too, they are equal, because even though the Xbox One X hardware is far more powerful than the PS4 Pro’s hardware is, the simple fact of the matter is that both, Microsoft and Sony have mandated that these new consoles need to be tethered to their base SKUs (the PS4 and Xbox One respectively)- in other words, developers can’t make Pro or One X exclusive games. At best they can embellish existing games on the new platforms.

What this means, then, is that even while the Xbox One X’s hard specs and performance are far better than the PS4 Pro’s, I don’t think there is that much of a difference to the end consumer. However, it seems like Lewis Ward, IDC’s Research Director, Gaming and VR/AR, does not. In an exclusive interview with GamingBolt, Ward drew a difference between the Pro and the One X, noting that while Sony will implement and introduce a proper PS5 in a few years, Microsoft will want to ride out the One X for a while.

“Pro is mostly a marketing gimmick,” he said, when asked about the question of a PS5 rather than further iterative upgrades from Sony. “It’s nothing like Xbox One X in terms of the performance lift. It’s basically a standard console refresh, but Sony tweaked a few internals and got a 10% performance boost for the Pro. Big whoop. Xbox One X is a much more fundamental redesign and it’s at least 40% more potent than the PS4 or the initial Xbox One SKUs. Xbox One X will be able to do VR and AR, although Microsoft will wait to turn that feature on until there’s some great software for it – and that will largely be about Win10 PC app development. Xbox One X will eventually run content preexisting Xbox One’s don’t, and I kind of don’t blame Microsoft for holding onto that shoe for a while (at least late 2018 and perhaps 2019). Xbox One X is a 8.5 gen console. PS4 Pro isn’t.”

10% performance boost?? The CPU is 30+% faster, and GPU is 233% faster. Faster RAM bandwidth, SATA 3, extra gig of RAM for OS. No, it's not a huuuuge increase, and it shouldn't be being release 3 years after the base model for the same price as the base model at its launch(plus 1TB HDD instead of 500GB). Kinda tired of people saying it's such a small upgrade. It is what it is. So is the X.

@i_p_daily: Not sure why consoles are compared to PC in terms of price per performance? PC has a full OS and capabilities other than just gaming. If you use your PC for exclusively gaming, then I can see the comparison working. But if I'm gonna spend $700-$800 on a PC, it's gonna be used for more than just gaming.

You can talk about power all you want with the X, it's not gonna make me want to buy one.

Tons of PC exclusive games along with all but a few Xbox exclusives. I'm not sticking up for PC... It just baffles me the two are compared price wise. For the extra $200, you're paying for features. If you use just for gaming(like me)(and you I think) then the X is a better value. I'm a console gamer, but I still need a PC as well for the things I mentioned .. oh and my taxes I'm about to do lol.

It's a crime because you pay roughly $40(easy to find a deal) a year and you get online as well as 48 games included in that price.

Do you know of any other crimes where you take 48 games and one year of online and they get $40 from you? You don't see the value there?

@Xplode_games: At least 48... Got 4 free on my PS4/psvr last month, plus 2 on my PS3, and if I still had my Vita, 2 more. So if this trends keeps up, it could be almost 100 games included for $40 a year. I also use the PS Plus discount on games I buy. I'm not on Xbox, but on PS, you almost need PS Plus if you buy digital from the store. Wasting money without it.

It's dishonest to lump the PS4 Pro together with the Xbox One X. Yes the X misses 4k a lot of the time but it still gives you 80% of the pixel count while the Pro only gives you 40% and soupy textures due to the much lower RAM and memory bandwidth. The X is a lot more powerful and a lot better for a 4k display.

Stop lumping them together as if they're similar. They're similar in the sense that both are mid gen updates. However, the X is vastly more powerful and is a console that DF routinely argues it's games are best suited for a 4k HDR display. Meanwhile the same DF routinely argues that the Pro games are best suited for a 1080p display. DF is an independent unbiased source that systemwars trusts. Cows have used it for years to argue the benefit of PS4 hardware over Xbox base hardware.
