Love Frictional Games and can't wait to see where this one goes, but one thing we know for sure -- it's probably gonna be scary as hell.

http://kotaku.com/the-next-game-from-the-creators-of-amnesia-looks-distur-1443854022?utm_campaign=Socialflow_Kotaku_Twitter&utm_source=Kotaku_Twitter&utm_medium=Socialflow

SOMA is meant to be a proper sci-fi game, and to get that right we couldn’t let the themes be an afterthought. My favorite works of sci-fi are the ones that use fantastic worlds to probe important issues in a way that down-to-earth settings just cannot. Great sci-fi authors like Asimov, Dick and Heinlein all do this. We want to give SOMA this quality as well.

The subject that SOMA will discuss is consciousness. Personally, I find it the most profound questions that it is possible to ask. “How can the feeling of subjective experience arise from a chunk of flesh?” Exploring this further takes us to questions such as “Can machines be conscious?” and “Do we have free will?” It quickly gets very disturbing and is ideal for a futuristic horror setting. It is the kind of sci-fi that we want to make.

From the start, we knew that this could not just come through background story or dialog. We want you to PLAY through this. It must be an integral part of the gameplay and not just fluff.

Part of this comes through the game’s monsters. You will encounter a number of strange creatures, each an embodiment of an aspect of our themes. In order to survive the journey, you need to understand how they work and in the process take on extremely unsettling subjects.

Our goal is for SOMA to not just be another carnival ride of cheap scares. It is meant to chill you at the core and confront you with questions about your very existence.

Wow. Awesome trailer. But they should catch up with modern standards and add hands animations. Objects floating in the air are not cool anymore. Especially after great Outlast first person view.

Love the art direction reminiscent of HR Giger. I'm interested.

Looks awesome, really liking the vibes

It better have native Oculus Rift support because it's too good an opportunity not to

also 2015? ugh....

Agreed, they didn't change it up in machine for pigs but hopefully they do add those touches here. They add so much immersion.

And hopefully chinese room stays the hell away! Loviing the HR. Geiger vibes I hope they really push that sense of displacement.

That was pretty unsettling, looks promising, but... I'm a little disappointed with the visual quality and lack of body animations, must say Outlast really spoiled me in that department!

I wonder what space closets will look like.

They need to scrap that theme, it's going to be so fvcking stupid here. There are much better and more inventive ways to avoid detection if that's the route they are going again.

You mean the modern standards where you don't even have legs and are basically a floating arm?

I agree though, but having hand animations will slow down certain parts, unless you want really weird super jittery hand animations.

Lems should get used to it. Theres no year headstart, or cheaper pricepoint in their corner anymore. Sony is going to dominate.

I feel that no hand animations are better than awkward animations like the ones in Miasmata.

Awesome trailer, Frictional tend not to disappoint

Never liked Penumbra games much myself. Black Plague is the highlight of the series, but even then, I think it's far behind the first Amnesia. And the final Penumbra game, Requiem, is basically an interactive tech demo, I don't remember encountering a single enemy, or any form of threat. It's just puzzles.

Oh, and here's a blog Frictional just posted, a little more details regarding this trailer:

Wow. Is it me or does it feel like Sony are trying to tempt PC gamers towards the dark (ps4) side?

Snapping up all these indies and pc devs makes it seem like the PS4 is gonna be veeeeeryyy similar to the pc in the games department. I honestly don't see the PC having as many exclusives as they've had over the past couple gens.

Soon enough the only reason to own a PC will be steam sales, mods and power. And for the ps4 is the excellent sony first party. Hmmm, for a cheap guy like me it doesn't seem worth it to upgrade to the next line of nvidia cards and to also buy a ps4 within the first 2 years anyway...

Probs upgrade my pcs gpu until dat sony first party begins piling up on the ps4!

Agreed, but something like Outlast had them and it's more effective to have them and have them done right. I loved peeking around a corner and seeing my hand there on a door jam etc.

Microsoft's policy is to allow self-publishing, and you can use the Xbox One console as a dev kit.for indie titles (it has some limitations in comparison to the actual Xbox One dev kits that major devs will be using).

But in addition to that, this game isn't an exclusive.

Seeing that its being released in 2015, it probably means this footage is extremely early.

for once a game with aliens that don't speak f*cking english and look like fluffy toys from Walmart. One thing i don't like tho is graphics. This isn't even good looking for 2012 and for 2015 that's almost pathetic. I want alien ship to be detailed, not some blocky looking crap with flat textures.

Yeah, when the animations are done right it's good, but most of the time it just makes the game feel clunky.

The trailer looks awesome. Is it running on Frictional Games own in-house engine? If so they've made a sh*t tone of improvements.it Looks fantastic.

Oh, and as for the story/theme, it just further reinforces my opinion that Frictional Games make some of the most thought provoking games out there.

They are a small indie dev using (I think) their own in-house engine, so cut them some slack. I'd much prefer they use their own engine which has it's own unique feel.
