For those who cannot afford a 1080.

The only reason the 480 will continue to sell is the price, people wont want to spend the extra $50usd. I really wish Nvidia priced the 1060 the same as the 480, then the 480 would be dead.
Still waiting to see what Vega is like and whenever the 1080ti comes out, what that is like also.

You're really that much against competition?

If they are priced the same, you, THE CONSUMER, would be dead and eaten alive by Nvidia. Monopoly is bad news for all of us.
Meh, I'll be upgrading to a 1070 or 1080 next year. My 970 can still carry me a bit longer.
Still great value for money though.

If you're upgrading next year you should just wait for the next cycle of cards, I'm not upgrading until Vega.
Cheapest 1060 I see listed here atm goes for 289€, cheapest rx480 for 279€ and asus strix 1060oc listed for modest 389€...
@dynamitecop: Hmmm....you have a point. The Vega might be the right choice for me. I'll wait to see what its performance is like before I upgrade.
Damn the 480 got its ass kicked BAD!
Yeah, that 25% uptick in MSRP for only 4-7% extra performance.
Another price:performance loser. Thank you, Nvidia.
But it also uses much less energy and won't fry motherboards. Though yeah they could price it a tad lower if they wanted.
I'm pro amd, but they could've done better than the 480. Not to mention it's usually Nvidia being shady, but with the gimped 4gb rx 480's it's amd that's shady this time around.
@mirgamer: Im just sick of amd always stuffing up, I've been waiting and waiting for amd to make something good again and they always fail. Competition is great, maybe amd can go by by and be bought by someone else, some company that can compete. Just because a company goes down doesnt mean another cant step up.

What are you talking about? AMD is literally as competitive as Nvidia... AMD defeats Nvidia, Nvidia defeats AMD, it's a figurative ballet power struggle of back and forth, back and forth and has been for over a decade. Nvidia just released the 1080, AMD will outdo it with something more powerful, then Nvidia will release a 1080 Ti to outdo that, and then AMD will release something to beat that, and so on and so forth.
These events are so cyclical you could almost time your watch by them, I've seen you shit talk them to no end and it's getting really annoying because you're so off base I'm actually questioning if you know anything about computers. What exactly do they need to step up on? Their drivers are perfectly fine, their tech and hardware is fine, their performance is fine, they're doing everything right and have been for a long time.
@dynamitecop: AMD is getting better yes. I was a hardcore Red fan, this 970 I have is my first Nvida card, I previously Xf'd 6950s for a very long time and was happy with those. I did say I will wait for Vega before writing AMD off, I want more than anything for AMD to come through the other side victorious, I am really liking what they are doing with Async compute, Nvidia for me have dropped the ball in that regard.
But my experience with Nvidia so far has blown anything I had with AMD for so many years out of the water. I do consider Nvidia a more scumbag company though, but I like their tech more.
Same with Intel, I'd rather AMD but yeah, we all know that story.
So no, I really really don't want AMD to die, but in my mind, if they don't one up Nvidia with Vega then I will look towards getting the next ti model.
And for my original post, if Nvidia priced the 1060 the same as the 480, yes as a competitive company, that would had crippled AMD, I don't understand why Nvidia didn't go for the jugular, I would had if I was the head of the company. Business is war.

See here is the thing though, in this multiple sentence post you didn't give any substance to your claims or views from the previous post.
"I've been waiting and waiting for amd to make something good again and they always fail"
You said you owned 6950's and were happy with that and think that nothing has been good since then? The 7000 series was great, the 200 series was excellent, the 300/Fury series was great, the 480 which just released is great and very inexpensive, they've failed at nothing.
"Competition is great, maybe amd can go by by and be bought by someone else, some company that can compete."
What are they failing to compete at? A marketing war? Their cards are just as substantial in terms of performance, their price to performance ratio's are always better, their driver problems don't exist anymore and haven't for a very long time, their tech is different but just as effective, Crossfire has actually surpassed SLI in terms scaling effectiveness and frame pacing, Nvidia still requires SLI bridges whereas AMD has direct bus connection, Freesync is a better technology than GSync and it's also FREE, their Gaming Evolved app is just as good for recording videos as Shadowplay...
I mean what's the problem here? Their cards draw more power and output a little more heat, who cares? That's inconsequential for most, aside from that it's mainly just personal preference.
@dynamitecop: The Nvidia cards still perform better, yes power and heat matter a lot, so not only do Nvidia cards perform better but they run colder and use less power, that alone is a massive reason why AMD need to get it together. Price/performance again is inconsequential for a lot of people, people will want the better card, and year in year out for a very long time that has been Nvidia. This year looks to be another Nvidia win.
Teams on both sides of this, its a fanboy war, it really is. I wish AMD could come through, they do make good cards, just not as good as Nvidia, I haven't used Evolve since my cards a few years ago but it was horrible back then, Nvidia's recent options of software looks amazing and is another great reason to buy Nvidia over AMD, I know a few people IRL that buy Nvidia just for Shadow Play.
What AMD has failed at is dethroning Nvidia, yes its a great alternative, but their the only real alternative there is. I'll be one of the first to praise AMD when they come out on top, I feel like a traitor still going Intel and Nvidia. I'm seeing this war for what it is, without fanboy goggles.
I liken to this Nintendo, once were great, the best at what they did, they still make great games, Hardware is still fine for what it does, has in the past been top dog, but now are always playing second fiddle. And like AMD I would love to see Nintendo on top again.
Damn the 480 got its ass kicked BAD!

16.7.1 driver has fixed RX 480 power draw issue.

And then A-Sync picks up and all the 1060 owners have regrets.... It's also not that far in front..... In fact the TPU review actually shows a much bigger gap then other reviews.
HARDOCP shows the gap to be pretty much none existent.
Meehhh I guess I rather wait for Vega or gtx 1070 price to drop.
Its just not worth the upgrade from 290 or rather sidegrade almost.
Not bad, but I'm going wait another 2 generations probably to upgrade my 970. I think that type of graphics card is what I might be interested in (size wise). It'll be perfect for my Micro ITX case.
The biggest problem I have seen with the 1060 (at least the founders edition, because the asus strix version apparently has it activated) is absolutely no gpu boost 3.0..
@Bigboi500: these two cards can handle games way better than the neo or scorpio could ever think of :P there SW worthy.
@sSubZerOo: no sli either. But this is just a one or two year card to me. You get it now to hold you over till next year when the real next gen of hardware is coming.

.. I don't see why people are obsessed with SLI at this level.. SLI isn't even being properly used in many games.. And a single card will always be better than SLI for a multitude of reasons.. If your thinking about sli'ing down the road.. You may as well just save up the money to get a 1070 instead..
The 480 still looks like the better "bang for the buck" card and also better performance versus Vulkan and DX12. The TDP does change things a bit, at least for me.
And not a lot of games support dx12 and vulkan just yet.

Yeah and even my MSI 970 is still good for the most parts but my gut tell me to stick to the plan and get myself a 1070 and gaming in 1440p/60fps is all I really wanna do. I'm surprise the 1060 even beats the 980 AND the RX 480. Was not expecting that at all. I thought it would just match the 970 at first.
RX 480 8GB = £230
GTX 1060 = £230
Yeah... I see no reason to get the RX 480.
Why do I feel some ignorant people are looking at the $200 480 and going yep AMD won!... No the 4GB model is no where to be seen in stock anywhere and 4GB is not enough anymore. I'd rather spend the extra for the 8GB model or simply put for the same price get a GTX 1060 which performs better in 90% of games for the SAME price.
Also one other factor, ALL the RX 480's are reference... and we all know even the absolute worst after market card is quieter and cooler than AMD reference cards.
Just look at the RX 480 Strix... Its the same price as the GTX 1060 Strix.
They are basically the same price and Nvidia out performs them in the HIGH majority of games.
I am ordering one next week.
Take this shit to the PC board. It has no relevance to SW.
PC is a gaming system.....
The best one, in fact.

Not to mention RX480 is in the PS4K, and GTX 1060 is Nvidia's response to the RX480.
MS has also said Scorpio's gpu will be like a GTX 980, so these cards are "next-gen now".
---
Current avg price(excluding resellers) of a GTX 1060 on Newegg is $271 across 14 cards. RX 480 avg price is $233 including 4GB, $245 for the 8GB. That's a 10% increase in price, for 6% increase in performance at 1440p. I didn't expect so many $250 AIBs at launch, so I admit I was wrong about the 50% higher price.

You need SLI for the latest games at 4K and 60fps. A single 1080 will be great for 1440p but still falls short of hitting 60fps in the more demanding titles at max settings. SLI is absolutely necessary.

A highly downclocked 480 in PS4 Neo, so its performance is well under 390/980 levels
