This is what Nintendo COULD have given you. This is done by fans who painstakingly over many years reverse engineered the Mario 64 source code, then applies true HD resolutions, widescreen, increased frame rates to 60fps, implemented a true analog third-person camera, and added new higher polygon meshes and high resolution textures. And this is 100% free if you own a legal copy of Mario 64.

And this is what a multi-billion dollar company with full access to the original source code, teams of artists, and developers gave you for 1/3 of that $60 price tag. No widescreen, It doesn't appear to be 60fps, same blurry textures it originally had. This is what Nintendo actually gave you.

Which would you rather have?

They don't care.

The point is, one project is something people did for free as a hobby, the other has a multi billion dollar corporation behind it. There is absolutely no reason Nintendo couldn't have made it widescreen, 60fps, improved the controls a bit, and upgrades the meshes and textures of the character and enemies in the game. It wouldn't have even taken them a few weeks. Nintendo just doesn't care about putting forth a good product anymore.

And as for how hard it is to get the above quality. It's just a free program called SM64PC builder. Supply your own ROM, select the mods, texture packs, etc you want from a list, compile, done. So long as you use a legally sourced ROM to decompile, it's all legal.

Well, it's 100% free because it's an illegally distributed copy of the game.

Whether you own Mario 64 or not is irrelevant (although I guess it makes people feel ethically better about breaching copyright law?).

@Planeforger: What copyright laws are you breaking for having a digital backup of a cartridge you own?

It's not. You have to supply your own ROM for SM64PC Builder to decompile. Without that ROM, it cannot do anything and contains no proprietary code. So legality depends entirely on whether you own a copy of that game legally, or not.

if you change the textures and character models you ruin the notalgia of the game.

but.... i suppose nintendo would have done a much better job than this fanmade thing if they tried.

Not when the models and textures actually remain true to the original look of the game.
