@commonfate: Those were not a "a prolonged outburst of bitter, outspoken denunciation" bro >.> At best I "tiraded" as much as you >.>

No one was ever arguing against that. I'm not entirely sure what launched Desmonic into his tirades tbh but I think we're all in agreement that well reasoned and well articulated reviews are always welcome here.
lol. Third party perspective: the guy wasn't even mentioned in the post you quoted.
Says nothing about being fired.
Being laid off and being fired are too different things.
Correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm not too familiar with these more technical terms, but laid off is usually applied when multiple people are let go, not necessarily for being bad assets to the team but because it's a necessity versus fired which is applied to a single worker which also implies he/she was a bad/lousy part of the team, correct?
I'm guessing the latter is much more severe to have in your CV.
Yeah, pretty much. Being laid off means you'll usually get a 6-12 month severance pay package and have your 401K and pension rolled into an IRA. You can also keep your Insurance for several months if the company allows it. You'll be able to get unemployment checks as well.
Being FIRED means you get no severance, insurance, recommendations or unemployment checks. You still usually get to keep your 401K and Pension.

You're absolutely correct. He quoted me.
@commonfate: Let's see. Post #392... Uh, no, he didn't. You notice the "guy" I meantioned is the one you said was tirading, not the one you were quoting.
I don't believe there were any other conversations in this topic that such a comment could have pertained to but if you wish to speak for him from a third-party perspective then I'm sure he won't mind (as I most guiltily did). Regardless, the conversation is done unless you have a point you would like to make?

Exactly the point. Even though it's done you brought him along in a quote that didn't mention him. And he's the one tirading. I found it funny.
This is very sad. I hope they will find other jobs, soon.
That a side, I think this was coming AFTER the GS's WEB change. The OLD GS was so user friendly and easy to find your friends and info. NOT like the ACTUAL GS, which feels SLOW, CLUNKY and unfriendly. I'm sure that these bad aspects have caused the REDUCTION of users visit to GS. This sure impacted in lower revenues from the site, which finally RESULTED in the REDUCTION OF THE STAFF.
GS's WEB change was a BIG MISTAKE. :-\
What's costing them money is they have no paid service, and everyone and their mother is using adblock. Hence the move to a more video focused site, so they can get those adblock users viewing ads to get to the video content they want. As bad as Tom was in reviews, he was actually worse on camera.

And?
Always sad to see somebody losing his/her job, but I can't say I will miss Carolyn...lets just be honest: she was a terrible reviewer, she couldn't stop mixing her personal views with her reviews. How many games have completely misleading reviews because of Carolyn? You know, the same girl who gave Gone home, one of the shititest game in existance, a 9.5, simply because she loves the LGBT community and GH was a lesbian love story.
Agree 100%
Did they at least fire the person/people who coded this glitchfest of a forum? As for the writers let go I have a few things to say. If gamespot was forcing Tom and Carro to write click bait bullshit then I am sad they got let go but they are probably better off somewhere with more integrity than gamespot. If that's just the way they are as writers and reviewers then **** them I'm glad they got let go. Their job was to help me decide if I should buy a game or not. I have nearly missed out on many games and I have boughten far too many shit games based on their recommendations.
As for Justin Calvert, he was my favorite reviewer and I am very sorry to see him go.
Wait, was Chele banned?
Let me take a moment to say **** God of War Asscension.
Wtf did chele do to get banned?
lol my post got deleted.
Every person that got laid off deserved it, Gamespot hasn't been good for a long long time, nothing but click bait articles and reviews trying to surpass IGN in terms of hits, then they hired Petite for petites ability to push petites LBGT narrative into almost every review.
suspend me, ban me, shit I rarely visit here anymore except to laugh at sheen hypocrisy IGN is a far better place.
Wait, the mods here are actually deleting peoples posts? First off, not everyone here liked some of the people that got laid off. Secondly, it's not against the ToU to express good cheer at seeing a shitty employee, who never even gave a damn about the community he wrote for, get the boot.
I think you mods need to re-read your own rules.
So again, GOOD RIDDANCE to Tom McShea.

Amen. Look at all the freaking spambot stuff in Off Topic and Games Discussion. I think these moderators should have better things to do than be thought police for a few few bad employees who got exactly what all bad employees deserve. But most of them are too busy hanging out in the mod board taking amongst themselves in an echo chamber about how awesome they are. (usually the so called "senior" mods who think they are too good for the very community they are supposed to be leading)
Their is nothing in the ToU that says we can't criticize these people just because they are now fired. If we could express our dislike of Tom's terrible writing and Caro's social warrior agenda before, then we can still do it now. None of these people even participate in their own forums anymore, so the likelihood any of them are even bothering to read any of these threads is slim to none. They don't give two shits about us, why in the blazing blue hell should we give two shits about them?
Harsh reality here… the main website and the forums are essentially functioning as two different websites altogether, and that's not something we chose. THEY made that decision to be distant, cold, and snooty. THEY decided they wanted to talk down AT us from above instead of engaging WITH us in discussion. So what right do they have to them turn around and expect us not to hurt their fragile little feelings? Hell, if anything the lay offs didn't go far enough.

negative comment near the beginning of the thread. think it was either wasdie or stevo that swung the hammer.

Why u do dis William?
Don't ban him pls!!!
But on a srs note; in the end people lost their jobs and in this economy it's not easy to get a new job.

@airshocker: They're banning people for being rude then calling them "scum" afterwards when they can't respond.
I for one am glad bad reviewers aren't here any more. Hope they manage to get jobs soon away from games journalism because they were smug and divisive. Don't wish ill of them, but glad they're gone so gaming can go back to focussing on what matters, not social justice b.s.
I recall a period not long back where the site seemed to be actively trolling its readers on a daily basis. They had at least two video blogs which directly poked fun at and attacked it's own readers and then review and article after an another offering controversial opinions designed to provoke people.
When they stopped the Feedbackula show I honestly thought there would be a change of direction and I do wonder whether this is related somehow. It's as if higher ups had grown tired of the negativity towards the site visitors, the judgmental attitudes, the politics, and overall, the huge amount of smugness this site was indulging in.

As a recent member of the mod team I can confirm that is exactly why Feedbackula was shitcanned. But no man, didn't you get the memo? We don't have a substantive issue with the quality of the writing of Caro and Tom, we are just upset that they gave a game we liked a lower score than we thought it should get. At least that's what I keep getting told.
@Randolph: Controversial scores are fine if you can back it up! Had no problem with the score! (Although I do have a problem with some of the second take scores, because they've been nothing more than attention seeking) 9/10 is almost the perfect score and whilst I agree with it I wouldn't have scored it that high for my own personal enjoyment. (Which is not something you should score a game on otherwise I'd be up for giving Shining Force 2 a 10/10) but what put people's noses out of joint was the adherence, again, to the misogyny meme. You can shoot as many men as you like, torture them as a necessity, treat them like shit, but treat women bad, even if it's an open world game that doesn't actively compel you to do that, and you're bad. GTA pokes fun at just about everyone. You can either object to that or you can see it for what it is. You can't cherry pick what you are okay with offending. People are just getting bored of it.
Anyway thanks for the reply. Eye opening.
I hated that Feedbackula guy, "oh I'm gonna get butt hurt cause some of you made fun of Carolyn" but hey it's perfectly fine for me to point out some comments after a review and make fun of them. To be fair though that name calling towards Carolyn was uncalled for.
@DocSanchez: Yep, and I would give Shenmue a 10/10 in that case. :)
What really riled me up though was that in her last review Caro oputs down Joel for killing so many people, but had absolutely no issue with Lara doing the same thing on a larger scale (and in a MUCH more vicious way at times) to an exclusively male population of enemies. (yep, she reviewed Tomb Raider) The message was very clear, if you are a man, that is always terrible and you are evil and incapable of love. Because you have a penis you have no right to defend yourself or those you love. If you are a woman though, it's totally just fine and you are absolutely justified in it no questions asked.
I've said it before and I will say it again, I hope Caro finds work somewhere else, but I am not ashamed in the slightest to be glad that she will no longer be writing about video games here.

Yea that pissed me off something fierce about her comment with Joel after she reviewed the TR reboot and had no issues with Lara doing it.

No, you don't. I've been there in two different eras now, (from 2002 to 2004, and then just earlier this year) and going back to the mod team nearly killed all interest and passion that I had for this community. The sheer amount of backstage politics, inactivity, laziness, and backstabbing is incredibly disheartening. If they weeded out the mod team to only people who actually contribute to the forums and lead discussion, as well as actually moderate and enforce their own rules, they'd be down to about three or four moderators.
It's not just as bad as you've heard, it's worse.

It absolutely was uncalled for. The fact that anyone who tries to vocalize a view against her is immediately lumped in with them in INFURIATING. It's just like how anyone who makes any kind of detailed and factual rebuttal to someone like Anita Sarkeesian is immediately lumped in with the knuckle heads who issues death and rape threats against her.
Wow, I usually gloss over the stickies so I just found out. Actually saw it on GB.
It's going to be interesting to see how many of these positions are filled again in the coming weeks and how many are lost for a protracted period. I'd prefer to see the mismanagement of this site corrected and CBS to reinvest rather than downsize the site permanently. Weird that I was just ranting a few days ago that CBS Interactive was indifferent to the decline of the site (the review staff, horrible redesign, poor site performance). If the site starts running better soon I'll consider myself properly chastened. ;P
I won't miss Tom or Carolyn. They weren't bad people by any stretch, and they both demonstrated themselves to be at least competent writers. They weren't good game reviewers, and each did their part to diminish this site's influence in their tenures. I know that there are positions out there better suited to each of their talents and goals and I hope they find them.
I'm barely familiar or never heard of the rest of those that lost jobs in this move. So I'll simply thank them for their efforts and wish them the best.

No man, we're just mad they underscored some game we got hyped for. We aren't allowed to have had any real substantive issues with their actual work. ;)

Darn, I wanted to rule over SW with an iron fist :P
But the mod who made the statement/threat in this thread regarding banning people admitted to not being an SW mod. Fortunately, Shadowchronicle has been understanding why such things frustrate SW posters.
