http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2014/01/07/dell-wasnt-joking-about-that-28-inch-sub-1000-4k-monitor-its-only-699/

Asus just announced a 4k monitor for $800 to counter Dell's $1000 4k monitor, Dell responded just hours later & confirmed it was actually only $700, competition is so good is it not?

I remember people saying 4k monitors won't be cheap until like 2016-17, by this rate, a decent 4k monitor will be $300 by the end of 2014, just in time for the next gen GPU's from AMD & Nvidia (Pirate islands & Maxwell) so 4k gaming will be affordable by the end of this year, no need for Crossfire/Sli $500 GPU's & a $3000 4k monitor

Now for the rest of this generation we are going to have to deal with console gamers saying there is no difference between 1080p & 4k, then when PS5 & the next Xbox gets 4k gaming in 2024, they will coincidentally notice how much better 4k gaming is & start saying "next gen is finally here"

Sounds familiar doesn't it

700+ is still pretty expensive. And we still need affordable GPUs for 4k resolution at 60fps+

$700 for a 4K display is a price I'd be happy paying, but I'm not going to leave 120/144Hz behind. Even the desktop experience feels a lot nicer with a 120/144Hz display.

What settings & FPS.... that depends on the game silly

For how much i can tell you, it's always around the same, GTX 860 $250, GTX 870 $400, GTX 880 $600, something like this, though AMD & Nvidia are launching their next gen cards around the same time, so they might be cheaper, because they can't overprice them due to no competition (Like Nvidia recently did with the 700 series)

So basically we have no idea if it will be cheap to game at 4K

One, it's Blu Ray, please get it right :P .

And secondly, can you really not tell the difference between BD and DVD? I guess that means you can't tell the difference between running a game at SD and at 1080 then neither...

Im aiming to upgrade my PC in 2015. Till then i hope there are 4k monitors around 300$/400$ and GPUs easily capable of 4k otherwise i wont upgrade.

My next upgrade will be for 4k gaming in mind. My concern is not about monitors price though but GPUs instead.

Very little difference. Most "next gen" games will opt for 720p or sub 720p for performance.

Fact is, most people don't give a shit.

At that price I'll bite, but only if its 60 hz. Still I would take more 120hz or higher monitors over 4K. Something over 1080p 120hz would be very welcoming.

4k is pointless over 1440p at those sizes (28 inch monitor)

You'd need at least a 32" to start to see a difference over 1440p.

Well I sure as heck don't care for 4k anytime soon, I got a couple of Dell 1440p monitors and they are gorgeous, they will keep me going for at least another 3 or 4 years, and at that point I will likely up the res.

yeah the screen is only double the price of a ps4. Great value.

And the best you can hope for is a $300 screen? or circa 1 ps4.

Better yet you wont even tell the difference on your tiny screen lol

Here's some benchmarks of current cards running at 4K

They use 4x MSAA which is completely pointless at 4K (although I think they do it for consistency, most benchmarks just use whatever the default Ultra/High/Maximum setting is) so you'd probably get a decent frame rate boost out of turning that off.

Even though 30FPS isn't ideal it proves there's hardware already out capable of running 4K in modern games. Whatever the next flagship Nvidia/AMD GPU is it's definitely going to be getting close to that 60FPS mark.

As for price, of course it's going to be expensive, this is brand new tech that's just starting to become viable, there's going to be a big entry fee, that's always the way. Just think though, a year after the new consoles have launched PC gamers could potentially already be playing in 4K for a somewhat reasonable price. That's pretty fucking impressive.

Its either going to be 30hz or a crappy TN panel (I would be shocked if it was both 60hz and an IPS, if so then that's very attractive even for $700).

Hopefully the 4K push means we can get named branded 1440/1600p monitors to drop in price (To go from my dell ultra sharp monitor to a 1440p version is going to cost $600-700 which is insane). Hopefully 1440/1600 IPS monitors drop to $300-400 in the next 12 months

I hope that OLED or some other technology will become viable for large displays soon.
