3rd person action games are all but dead

With God of War being a smash hit are 3rd person action games dead? With no Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry in sight is Bayonetta 3 the last of it's kind?

God of War seems to be more of an adventure game then action oriented. God of War just doesn't seem appealing to me. I enjoy having different weapons at my disposal. Having to use the same weapon the entire game would be boring to me.

Am I wrong about this or are their other weapons in God of War? I haven't played the game but I'm not falling for the hype. Lots of other games that were hyped I didn't like either like Witcher 3. God of War looks pretty but game play wise it looks generic.

Gameplay was a BIT meh in the beginning, but I started to enjoy it immensely after I was allowed to start upgrading my skills and armor etc. I was glad that the blades of chaos were gone, I was so done with them anyway :P :P :P

I don't like the camera. It's too zoomed in. All the big AAA games play like that now and it's stupid. You have to constantly adjust the camera and can barely see your surroundings. It's so bad that they had to put traffic cones in. Also, I'm getting tired of every game envying cinema and having the usual walk and talk crap. These games aren't even as good as the movies they want to be. I'm playing Gravity Rush right now and it's probably my favorite PS4 game so far. I feel like I'm playing a proper game, not another interactive movie.

Not the worst thread fail I've seen, but still pretty bad.

I still find it odd there are people who either love TPS or FPS games and hate the other, whereas if it's a shooter I just consider it a shooter, one isn't any more base or artistic than the other.

These days most third person action games are shooters or stealth action hybrids such as Batman Arkham series, Assassin's Creed series and Middle Earth series or they're Dark Souls wannabes or standard/slow paced hack n slash like Monster Hunter and The Witcher 3. Topic creator has a point there are hardly any games that are full on fast paced hacking n slashing and jumping like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta where you try to keep up almost never ending combos and dodge enemies while doing them these days.

Wouldn't say I hate fps but I get motion sickness with most fps games :P but fine with all tps games. :)

There is certainly a shift in interest for tonally mature narratives and lighter action games in the current single-player space which I think attributes in this direction for God of War. I hope that games like Bayonetta can succeed despite this.

OP... what's your definition of a third person action game?

Third person action games has always been bad except Mafia 1 and Max payne. so who cares?

I believe he mean't Hack n Slash games like DMC, Bayonetta, NG etc. And I believe we are starting to see less and less of that. It's quite funny I used to hate these kind of games but then I played DMC 3 and GoW quite late and fell in love with the genre. Now I don't get such games anymore. Hopefully there's DMC 5 in development.

His post doesn't say specifically anything against the PS4 or for the XB1; he was just talking about a genre that he thought was dead and using GoW as an example. It's his opinion. I think he means DMC Bayo, which those are chracter action games and he think Gow Of War is less than those.

"3rd person action games"? What genre is that? Uncharted is 3rd person and is an action game, Max Payne is in 3rd person and an action game...

sigh, anyway, you probably meant Hack'n'Slash and no, it aint dead yet. NieR Automata was a hit and some Hack'n'slash/RPG hybrids like Nioh and Bloodborne were also hits. Bayonetta didnt sell well on the switch but there are rumours of DMC5 coming. They are definitely "dying" but there's still hope... I hope

Bayo 1 and 2 on Switch only sold slightly less than their Wii U counterparts. For a port of a 4-year-old game that wasn't that popular to begin with, I certainly wouldn't call that a failure.

Lol.. Those who are saying it's more of a adventure than gameplay clearly hasn't played the game. And yes the Axe is not the only weapon in the game. And yes you can adjust the camera in the settings if you think it's so zoomed in. It tells you on the loading screen so peeps stop lying like you played the game cause clearly some of you hasn't

This was brought to my attention today on the Chris Wagar Discord.

It looks like an interesting game made by a new indie studio and the Tweets show some pretty interesting, fast-paced action. It also has a unique theme for the genre. The game enters early access (Steam) on May 8th, although I'm not sure if that is exclusive to Japan.

I think maybe the hack n slash genre was way overused back in the PS2 era and in the beggining of ps3. While I don't miss them, it'd be nice to have a new DMC.

Having in mind Bayonetta 2 was already considered a failure on the WiiU I wouldnt call that "good" either. And thats still no excuse cause MK8 sold better on the Switch despite being a port of a relatively old WiiU game

I think TC means these stylistic hack and slash action games. Specifically something like The Old GOW, DMC, NG, Bayonetta etc. They are not necessary dead but it seems like 3rd party publishers, studio for hire will only work on them if console manufacture funds them. We often talk about attach rates and exclusivity sales. If you think about despite some of those games going multiplat GOW was the most successful of them all. I think those games have a peek sale number of something like 2-3 mill. Publishers feel that is not enough in today market. They would have to spend more for small market window. Only GOW games punched above that I believe before they too fell off and they were not the best selling exclusives.

Now that the market is starting to peek. I think they will get a come back from indies, capcom and maybe Koei Tecmo will get started with NG. Nintendo has already got things going with Bayonetta 3. Although I don't think the switch port of Bayonetta went too well. Sony have also been giving space to that indie game cant remember the name. Something Asida.. I don't know.

I haven't played enough God of War to judge it yet, but otherwise I've enjoyed the combat of Bloodborne, Dark Souls III, Nier: Automata, Nioh, Transformers: Devastation, and the Yakuza games this gen.

Play Bloodborne and Nioh, they're probably the closest you’re going to get anymore to a classic action game outside of what you’ve named.

@tryit: The dash mechanic lets you bridge space between enemies, parry attacks as well as dispose of them quickly which seems to encourage speed as well as combos. Whether that plays into the points system, I don't know but it certainly appears that the unique mechanic here is the dash and how that is used in combat. Seems to have a lot of ranged enemies which makes me believe separating the distance between the player and the enemy is a factor of the game which is quite different from other action games.

Also I like that they give a real-time letter grade during combos. Numbers are always good but it's cool that you have grading info too. Games like Bayo give you a grade after each verse but not real-time during the verse.
