I was mighty impress how AMD came this far with Ryzen 3000 series this time around and I didn't get the 2700X until much later. I'll be replacing it with 3900X at the end of the year though when all the hype dies down a bit and the benchmarks were really outstanding. Glad AMD is bringing competition in the CPU market and I'm also glad I didn't bother with i9 9900K cause I ain't going back to Intel.
3900X is an excellent choice as my all-around gaming & multitasking PC so this is exciting news for me. Multitasking is very important for me cause I do way more then just gaming on PC after all.
It took AMD 3 revisions to catch up to Intel's chip from last year.
Just wait until the beast awakens :P
What beast? Intel is stuck on 14nm for the time being the only advantage they have is higher clock speed

It isn't just higher clocks when it comes to games tho, core to core latency for example is still better on Intel
But is AMD that much behind in games for it to matter, while pretty much demolishing all productivity tasks and all that while running on less power...
Pretty much, ryzen is catching up atm. They are doing great. However there carpet tunnel syndrom of focusing on more cores instead of more ghz is really hurting them in the end.
Also those x570 boards seem to be a disaster and expensive. So there's that. They need to cut some prices pretty soon on those and start to figure out non active cooling on them.
9000 series of intel is still king of the hill for gaming.

what kind of work you do other than gaming?.i too want to build a pc that can do programming work and bit of gaming. so i'm not sure whether to buy intel or AMD.
I’ve got my motherboard and case ready. Just waiting on and deciding between the 12 core and 16 core.

which mobo? the x570 seem pretty damn horrible, for some reason the chipset power consumption has gone up(and it's not due pci-e 4 as some say) and thanks to that like all of the mobos have these noisy little fans on em...
@howmakewood: the only good ones seem to be the MSI ones. Because the fan isn't pointing at the GPU.
These tiny fans are stupid! Hope they reiterate on those.
MSI mobo's allow you to turn off the fan until a certain temperature... But what the hell is the right temperature for a mobo? :S

there's plenty of room on the board for a passive heat sink solution, yet they have gone the way of gazillion rpm fans instead...
@howmakewood: x570 cheap-o fans is the dumbest thing about this ryzen series.
I'd rather get a x470 mobo at this point but that is not a perfect siutation either, because it needs to be flashed.
So I'm gonna wait for x470s that are flashed in advance or x570s that can find a better cooling solution...

yeah flashed 470 seems a way better option considering the performance differences seem to be pretty non existent

I think it has something to do with the ram modules they have a lot of issue's getting higher mhz ram working on those boards.

Other then just gaming, I mainly do arts & pics like editing for my upcoming avatars/sigs pics. I also sometimes will upload a game from youtube & streaming through Twitch but I rarely do it nowadays but the best thing about AMD Ryzen CPU's are it's multitasking benefits that really does it well over Intel but Intel is still good for just pure gaming only. Gotta go with Ryzen such as 2700X or 3000 series to take advantage over it's multitasking with more cores/threads.
@howmakewood: yup, but it still seems like gamble to me.
will the cpu run perfectly on a x470? How about the ram? will it perform at full speed?
Not an ideal situation. And I will read a lot more before I buy.
Again these professional reviews with 600-800dollar x570 mobo's don't seem all that helpful to your average gamer and I will be looking at consumer experiences.
@howmakewood, Steve from Gamers Nexus has pointed out that the i5 9 series are a bit worse compared to their Ryzen counterparts due to latency issues, so, yeah, seems like only the high-end Intel chips are better, unless you can justify a few frame increase for 100-200 bucks more.
God damnit why do they keep changing this forum. It's horrible now.
Anyway, there are a handful of hilariously ignorant posts in this thread regarding AMD and the x570 chipset. Intel is literally only getting you 5-15 more fps for more money in most cases and a scheduler that cuts your fps down dramatically if you run any streaming software - where on Ryzen, you lose close to none. Regarding the active cooling on most of the x570 boards, the problem isn't the noise (lol) but the fact that they are probably going to die out - that being said, Gigabyte's Aorus x570 motherboards are the first true direct 14 + 2 phase VRM motherboards, literally some of the best consumer boards ever made - in addition to this, the Aorus Xtreme x570, while expensive at 600 USD, requires no active cooling, instead opting for quite beefy and aesthetically pleasing heat pipes.
Linus said it best in the video JasonOfA36 linked: "If you've got real work to do on your computer, get a 3rd Gen Ryzen" and it is still tough to justify the Intel chip because you are only getting a tiny amount more frames.
@howmakewood I got the Asrock Taichi X570. Not gonna lie, I picked that board 100% based on aesthetics.
Im one of the idiots who bought an i7 7700k a month before coffee lake realeased. So im stuck on a dead platform(z270) with a 4c8t cpu. Dont really want to upgrade yet, but I need to.
Why do you want to upgrade?, that cpu still rocks hard to this day.
@Gatygun: I’ll be running the 12 core 3900X for now. It’s not installed yet because my current build is a mATX build and that form factor isn’t really supported these days. I’m being forced to go “full size” again, but I can’t just use a case I already own... I need something new! It’ll probably be a couple weeks before it’s done. But I’m also upgrading my itx build. That’s my emulation PC that will run my arcade cabinet stuff. I haven’t tried BOTW yet, but it’s currently running a 2600X and a 1660Ti. I’m going to upgrade that to a 3700X and either a 2070 Super or a 5700XT.

Ah nice, gratz on your new setup tho.
They are more than good, they literally made Intel's mainstream lineup completely irrelevant by matching the IPC of Intel but have more cores and threads in each price category, these are finally chips I can recommend for gaming over Intel.
That said they don't overclock well and my 4.8GHz 8700K is still top tog for gaming and i'll hold on to it until the competition starts to real keep up because AMD right now are competing against old chips on even old architectures and just caught up on the IPC.
If the rumours are true and intel is looking at 18+ IPC boost and they hit 10 cores on 20nm with their next chips then I think I'll stick with Intel unless AMD release something even better than that.
The future is looking bright now for the consumers when it comes to CPU's... Shame about the GPU market, those prices seem fixed.

10 cores on 20 nm? it should be 10 cores on 10 nm UV

That's so unlike ron, normally he always hypes amd up :P
Anyway, anybody that did tests and honestly says that same ipc performance wise ) a 4ghz 3900x is going to hold up in games with a 5ghz intel is honestly just fooling themselves. It makes no sense.
Also cores are only a minimum that you need, the moment you got enough its all about IPC and ghz on it.

Zen 2 is good, but not enough for upgrade performance jump from my current systems and Zen 3 7nm+ UV is planned for next year.
Hang on a sec, who was it that argued with me in other threads about how their 4 core, 8 thread processor was not a bottleneck, how it was some sort of beast?
