A father has banned video games from his home after his 17-year-old son unwittingly spent $7,625.88 (£5,255.03) on the popular football game FIFA.

Lance Perkins made the drastic vow after receiving the huge bill for in-game purchases in the post.

"It floored me. Literally floored me, when I'd seen what I was being charged," he told CBC News (via Albaraa Fahmy on Digital Spy). "He thought it was a one-time fee for the game. He's just as sick as I am, he never believed he was being charged for every transaction, or every time he went onto the game."

And the household ban is no temporary measure: "There will never be another Xbox system—or any gaming system—in my home," he said.

Pretty sure I read that article months a go.

Either way pretty dumb, I am sure he will stop payment on those charges. Not sure if that will get him off the hook though.

Another example as why I will never put anything on my console account other than a prepaid card.

Apparently the dad has appealed and the case is being investigated. MS has stated that since the X1 does have parental controls, however, it's most likely going to find that the charges are legitimate.

It's easy to blame parents for this sort of things but these games are designed to make spending money tempting, easy and unclear. Naive parents whose credit card information is already entered are prime targets for this sort of thing.

This dad has no recourse. His son spent eight grand of his money without his knowledge or consent and he's just going to have to pay it off.

Makes sense to me, I don't really see a loophole here for the parents to exploit. Maybe they shouldnt have saved their credit card info on the xbox...

The value is in USD. You can also see the value in GBP

indeed, if he's 17 and doesn't know he's spending money, the kid must be mentally disabled.

For those who are wondering , I spend 3000$ over the time span of 3 years, that's 1000$ a year. I know it's a lot of money, but it's only 75$ monthly if you look at it from my perspective and I play this thing pretty much all the time.

I don't have the superior teams though but certainly very good ones. IF you want the best of the best, well that's probably the amount of money you will have to spend ( 7000$), especially this year since the prices in packs are less than the years before.

A word of advice, don't put your credit card in any xbox.

Who gives their 17 year old an $8,000 credit limit in the first place??

$8,000 is a lot, that family is likely going to have trouble paying that off, that really sucks, but the father did give his 17 year old a CC.

I never understood paying for virtual items. It is a scam. Especially on a full priced game. Those Ultimate Team cards could easily be in the game for free. I blame mobile gaming for corrupting the industry with all this micro-transaction bullshit. I refuse to pay for that shit. I avoid modes like FUT completely. Such a waste of money.

It's fucking crazy how you can spend even a fraction of that money and not unlock anything and everything the game has to offer.. These stories where we hear this kid wrack up a bill of upwards to $40k a single mobile game is fucking absurd, in no way possible should a game even come that close in being able to charge a single person that much with the things it is trying to sell to begin with..

Really, the dad should be blaming his son, not Microsoft and video games in general. Getting rid of game consoles while the son still lives in the house is a good first step, but if I did that when I was 17, I'd be getting a job and giving my entire paycheck to my parents until the $8000 was paid back. It really wouldn't take that long, considering 17 year olds have no real cost of living.

The dad is a fool if he thinks his 17 year old didn't know how much money he was spending. I've played Madden ultimate team before and never spent real money but I've seen the option for it and its set up in a way that you will see the amount charged every time you pay for points. The 17 year old dumbass probably kept ripping packs and getting bad players and couldn't stop.

Take it he was playing Ultimate Team? Doesn't it actually show the monetary value for each pack he ends up buying?

Guy is 17 years old. It's pretty damn hard to plead ignorance in this matter.

Wish I could share that hype, but I suck at fighting games. Haven't really been into that shit since Tekken Tag. And even then, got tired of losing, my reaction time is slow, couldn't beat normal people who knew how to play, only the nubs.

I blame the father and kid totally. We've all made purchases on these systems, you are damn well told that you're spending real money. Kid has no self control and spent $8000, and the father gave the kid a credit limit of $8000.

That said, while the argument that the charges are legitimate can be made, it is kind of shitty of the credit company and the console company not to work with him on the issue.

Why didn't his credit card company catch this? He'd have to be making charges left and right. I remember during an Xbox sale I bough 4 or 5 games in a couple minutes, each being an individual transaction of only like $4-5 each (because they don't have a cart system). And in that time after I made my last purchase they put a hold on my credit card I had to verify they were my purchases, my phone and email got warnings of suspicious activity and I had to verify them to lift the freeze. He'd have to be spam purchasing these things, shouldn't that have raised some red flags?
