When I first started gaming it was at 1024x760 as the standard (320x160 for consoles of the time)

Now 10 years later I'm at 2560x1600, and am seeing more and more screenshots with that resolution.

Meanwhile consoles are struggling to do 720p (about the same spread as pc vs console years ago)

Do you think the next consoles will be 1080p standard, and PC at something higher than 1600p?

How much will graphics improve when consoles aren't upscaling images into muddy resolutions they don't support? Imagine Gears 3 at true 1080p + AA.

Unfortunately for consoles, TV sellers are using 1080p (and will be for years) as their max resolution. Meanwhile PC monitors keep increasing in resolution, dramatically increasing image fideltiy in games. How will consoles get over the 1080p hump when TVs don't support higher res?

Higher resolution hurts frame rates, I'd like to keep my 1080p for the rest of next gen, cheaper that way. An ugly game looks ugly, regardless of the resolution, like that game, what ever it is.

720p will always be the console standard.KHAndAnime

I doubt that for next gen.

You already have a thread on this. Why make another one?

BTW, the texture on the hand and sleeve is horrendous at best.

Considering resolution of consumer TV's is now 1080p standard, coupled with further distance from screen with consoles - 1080p as a standard next gen would be fine.

Most console games aren't even 1080p. Which is perfectly fine, since games are looking great.

I don't see that happening. I'm guessing standard for 1080p in the next ~5 years.

Hopefully TVs start advancing beyond 1080p, which is definitely way WAY to small for the size of the screen.

That is the saving grace for consoles, you are usually 5ft away from the screen, so the fact that pixels are the size of your finger isn't as apparent.

Move up close to a console game on a 55" LCD, you'll see that console games actually look a lot worse than you would think.

Hahhaha, I agree, though far away console games look OK.

Inspect UC2 up close, the graphics are pretty bad. Fuzzy, aliased mess. Low res textures, tons of pop-in, etc.

Indeed. As the other thread showed, paying $900+ for better graphics isn't worth it with so many games looking great on much cheaper systems.

Not to me and most critics that gave Gears, KZ2, UC2, and Crysis 2 praises and in some cases, awards based on their visuals. Didn't MGS4 win "Best Technical Graphics" over Crysis: Warhead HERE in 08?

Great is a factor of comparison. If you don't have a gaming PC to compare then yes, they do look great.

PS2 looks great as well, if you had never seen PS3 or a PC.

Wrong. "Better" is a factor of comparison. Good, bad or, in this case, great, are subjective, personal adjectives, based on a lot of things.

Oh it definitely isn't. Especially when most high-profile games are being released on consoles and designed to fully use their capabilities. Consoles are doing incredibly well this gen, and luckily the new gen isn't coming anytime soon.

So data, pixel counts, graphical horsepower, resolution.... none of that matters?

So gravity is subjective now too?

I think 720p will remain the standard on consoles, even next gen. It's not like consoles this gen can't do 1080p. Developers just opt to run the game at 720p with higher settings. I don't see developers sparing effects for increased resolution next gen, either.

There's a thing called "Technical" and "Visual". Technical graphic can't be debated in most cases. Visuals can be debated, and is solely up to the individual to decide if it's "visually" appealing to THEIR eye.

It totally matters, that's why most PC games look better than console games. But "better" is not what we were talking about.

No, in fact, it's quite objective, since you can measure it. But we're not talking about things that are defined and measurable. We are talking about what's "good" (great), which isn'tdefined nor measurable.

But consoles are 720p max (upscaled), most are sub-HD still.

So maybe the next-gen hits 1080p, but then TVs are limiting advancement with a tiny res. of 1920x1080

"Advancement" to this gen came with the death of my favorite genre and severely debilitated the other. Unfortunately, higher requirements means higher expectations. And higher expectations cant always be met.

That's the most silly argument i've ever heard lol. Your tv doesn't magically create more pixels. It just streches the image ( with an expensive word called 'upscaling' ). Srsrly, educate yourself more.

What was wrong with my comment. "stretches the image", you are confused. Consoles next will be 1080p because that's the HD TV standard.

the reason 720p and 1080p will be fine on console is because you sit 5-10 ft away from the tv. There is no reason to sit closeup to a 55" TV. It wasn't designed for that, and it defeats the purpose.

I posted Fallout NV instead of Witcher 2 or Crysis because it gives you a size comparison of a game you may have played.

See my last posted pic; that is native resolution of console Fallout NV.

You could fit 50 console screenshots in my one screen. If the artists failed that is irrelevant. Point is: PC has dramatically higher resolution, which offers dramatically better visuals (and immersion).

Except consoles don't need to have higher resolutions than 1080p.

Sitting at the optimal distance, 1080p on a TV is amazingly crisp. We won't need higher resolutions than that for a long time.
