http://kotaku.com/15-year-old-kid-spends-37-000-euros-on-gold-in-free-to-1642091831

Then says he didn't know he was spending real money.

Apparently he got his grandfather's credit card number when his mom required help buying something from Amazon or somewhere.

1. No 15 year old doesn't understand what "real money" is and it's real world application.

2. That said....theres something about spending $46K just to make the game easier....that should require it to be labeled something other than F2P.

Loltaku.

Anyways, this is pretty much up there with the 15 year old girl who spent 30 grand on buying tf2 hats from other players via paypal using her moms credit card thinking the mom would be able to get the money back if she reported fraudulent payment. Good thing is it didn't work and the account was trade banned so she got stuck with a 30,000$ debt and untradeable tf2 hats.

This is particularly strange:

After linking the credit card to his own iTunes account, he spent thousands of euros on gold in Game of War: Fire Age over the course of a couple of months.

I don't get it. Didn't the grandfather notice the balance on his current account after the first month?

Free to play usually means limitless spending options.

Which means F2P games are as far removed from free as possible, which is really ironic.

I had my Apple account hacked by some in China, they spent £80 on gems for some random game. I called Apple who stopped the account, changed the card on the account (I don't have a Mastercard) and then refunded me the £80 so now I have £80 on my account all because some idiot hacked me to play a stupid F2P game.

Maybe he doesn't use the credit card that much and/or doesn't get monthly statements?

Anyways it's pretty damn hard to believe the 15 year old didn't know he was using real money. I call complete bullshit on that one. I would ass-ume you get some kind of statement at check out (which this kid would have obviously seen many times) and the balance at the bottom would have had the Euro symbol beside it. From the name I'm guessing it was a strategy game so I'm assuming he's not mentally retarded.

I say set the kid's life back a decade or so and make him pay off the $46K.

@FoxbatAlpha: nope I don't know what game it is but f2p usually means:

  1. Get things now: $$$$$
  2. Get things later: Grind for 6 months

At the end of the day, to remain "f2p", devs usually make PVE content easy and can be completed in low tier gear. PVP always reqires OP gear, but PVP in mmos is usually unbalanced and have low populations.

You need to see MWO, thats a F2P game that actually is not paid to win.

This is either F2P done wrong ("freemium" bait and switch) or a gamer with no patience. Or a combination of both.

Adults don't even understand the concept of a credit card, I don't see how this kid would if not taught by competent parents.

People treat them like free money and don't think they ever have to pay for them. Then they max it out, get offered limit increases and rinse/repeat until bankruptcy.

Any level of interest over 6-9% should be illegal. Banks shouldn't be allowed to lend to people they know can't afford to pay it back on time.

Well, the grandfather still needs to buy bread, milk and other shit grandfathers buy. He had to somehow notice the balance on his current account.

Exactly the reason I've never had a credit card and I'm 34. If I can't afford it at the time I save up. Necessities like cars and hospital stays are put on monthly payment plans.

@Boddicker: actually I think credit cards are safer. If you spend debit cards and some howyour account gets compromised the money comes right out of your bank and your screwed until it's resolved. With a credit card if something happens you haven't spend your own money yet till you pay the credit card company and so I no big deal to wait fo the resolution because you at least have your cash still.

Credit cards are excellent if you use them properly. They are a great way to build up a solid credit score. I've seen many mortgage's denied because people have simply never had a credit card, and their credit elsewhere is just terribly lacking.

Still, if you go nutso on them, then you deserve that awesome interest :P

Adults don't even understand the concept of a credit card, I don't see how this kid would if not taught by competent parents.

People treat them like free money and don't think they ever have to pay for them. Then they max it out, get offered limit increases and rinse/repeat until bankruptcy.

Any level of interest over 6-9% should be illegal. Banks shouldn't be allowed to lend to people they know can't afford to pay it back on time.

Exactly the reason I've never had a credit card and I'm 34. If I can't afford it at the time I save up. Necessities like cars and hospital stays are put on monthly payment plans.

Credit card = no

Debit Card = yes

Not sure why you wouldn't use a credit card then. Revolving free credit if you always pay on time, various cashback/rewards depending on the card, and maintaining an excellent credit rating... all benefits that cost a financially disciplined person nothing. At your age do you not trust yourself?

Credit cards are excellent if you use them properly. They are a great way to build up a solid credit score. I've seen many mortgage's denied because people have simply never had a credit card, and their credit elsewhere is just terribly lacking.

Still, if you go nutso on them, then you deserve that awesome interest :P

No history is bad history.

Sadly, that's pretty much it. Still credit can be built up in other areas (phone bills, etc) but that's the way the world turns... It's not even money anymore, it's just debt.
