Has there ever been a worse team name than Tampa Bay Rays?

Tampa Bay Devil Rays wasn't the greatest, but it had that 2-1-2-1 rhythm which was kind of catchy. Now that they've dropped the Devil part, the name simply stinks. "Tampa Bay Rays" sounds flat; it has no pizzazz.

It does sound a bit odd. Could be worse though: Tampa Blurays

Always thoughtAnaheim's Mighty Ducks was a lame name for any professional team, Disney owned or not. The NBA's Toronto Raptors is another. Why have a mascot that is extinct?

You all are forgetting the most intimidating team name known to mankind. It strikes fear into the hearts of opponents, even as they rack up 90+ losses every season. I'm talking, of course, about the Kansas City Royals.

Yeah might as well be the Tampa Bay Johns or Steve's. Actually I think Tampa Bay Steves sound better than Rays.

They probably had to drop the word "Devil" because of those religous whackos.

Actually, it's even lamer than that. In the former name, "ray" refered to the marine animal. The new "ray" now represents sunbeams in accordance with Florida's nickname: The Sunshine State.

Some colleges have some pretty odd mascots, especially the smaller schools. You have Banana Slugs and Lord Jeffs, and plenty more.

Not sure what you're saying "no" to?Are you saying you like the idea of extinct or imaginary mascots or teamnames? Or why am I going there?

For me, being an american football fan, NFL eurpope was too hard to get into not only because of the poor play and horrible looking uniforms, but the team names were too out there. The Galaxy, Sea Devils, the Fire. well Fire's not too bad actually. I don't know, call it male bravado or whatever, Ijust don'tfind much interest inteam namesthat aren't imposing, menacingor thatexudepower, or at least are some kind of symbol of the host city's history or culture.

Gereen Bay packers. Never understood the name.GalaxyMan93

they are called the packers because when the team was first formed they were given the gear/uniforms by a packing company in Green Bay...one of the conditions was they had to name the team after the company

Hense we have "Green Bay Packers"
