NO. Any so called "sport" in which a an "athlete" cites as the reason for losing a race on any given day as to: "Well, the car wasn't handling well today; I knew from the start it would be a long afternoon"; isn't a sport. You don't hear Albert Pujols saying on a postgame interview: "Well my bat wasn't light enough today; ohhh and by the way that error, it was a problem with the leather" or maybe Kobe accusing the "ball air engine" of over hitting. In Nascar the cars have too much imput on the outcome of the results. The cars should only be an equipment which should serves as intermediaries for the drivers talent. Plus not every car is created equal, but every baseball is, every basketball is and every damm football is.
If you want to make excuses and call it a "Motorsport" be my guess.
I can accept auto racing as a sport, even though I think it's more based on mental and skill rather than being atheletic.
I usually tend to consider a sport being about atheletes who can play just about everything. Like Terrel Owens can dunk, Steve Nash is great at soccer, Nate Robinson or Charlie Ward are great football player, and Michael Jordan is pretty good at baseball, etc. I think true atheletes like baseball, football, soccer, basketball players, etc. are pretty good at all atheletic sports.
But for race car drivers or golfers? I don't know. They can drive a car or a golf ball but can they shoot a basketball or catch a football in mid air? For example, my brother is good at driving but he can't catch a ball or shoot a basketball. He's definitely not athletic but he's got good driving skills.
Anyway, at least it's not as bad as pro poker players calling poker a sport.

I agree with you but then Chess would be a sport too. A board game sport. But is it definately better than Poker. Poker sucks on TV.
[QUOTE="ASK_Story"]Michael Jordan is pretty good at baseball, etc.

 it turned out he wasn't actually
Just because he didnt play in the Major doesnt mean he wasnt good. My brother played college basketball and he is pretty good but he never put all out effort into it as he did into his studies but I guarantee he would whoop a lot of people on the court easily.
Jordan is better than both of us put together at baseball.

Very well stated. Bottom line is I don't think a lot of people know how good you really have to be to be involved in the collegic level as well as the minor league system.

Just think about the worst player in any league and he would still take you to school unless you have played at a higher level, but if you played at a higher level then you would not say anything at all because you already know.
definitely a sport and you need to have mental strength as well as physical. its also very team orientated. the driver is screwed without his pit crew.atlflcns7_2004
I think Motorsport is said best. Because a long distance runner is the same as racing but with very high physical and mental demand too but he needs to train alot harder than the race driver. Race drivers are crazy, they can die on almost every lap.

he batted .202 and struck out 114 times :|
I respect that he wanted to play baseball for his dad, but you have to admit, baseball was not his sport. the only reason they signed him was because of his name

I know that the F1 drivers regularly play football(soccer) matches against the professionals for charity and some of them are actually pretty good also their training programmes involve a broad range of sports.

Well yeah he was alot better at basketball than baseball for sure. It just doesnt mean he was terrible like as if I were playing baseball.

My point is, athletes are practically good at any sport, even though they may excel at one thing.
Besides I said Michael Jordan is "pretty good" at baseball.:P And like someone said earlier, I bet he could whoop all our butts in this forum in baseball.
Barkley once said that even the worst player in the NBA is really good. Just imagine how hard it is to get into that league. So even if MJ was the worst minor league player, he was still probably a million times better than any of us, unless some of us here are actual atheletes that played at a higher level, and no, EA sports doesn't count. :P
Its something alright, but I don't think you have to be an athlete of any kind to do it. Hand Eye coordination, and good reflexes are needed but that can be said for Major League Gaming.
So I won't poor more gasoline on this forest fire.
[QUOTE="gasmaskman"]Yes, and it's more athletic than you think.dcowboys3315
can u explain that.
They have to be fit, because they have to race in like 120 degrees, and they lose a large amount of weight (over 10 pounds) each race due to this heat.
Sure, they don't have to practice throwing and what not, but it's still more than just driving.
not only motor racing is a sport, it is also one of the most challenging types. it demands greatly of the drivers/pilots physical and mental condition, it's extremely exhausting ( only the racers can prove this, but i've met enough to know this is true ), and most importantly it's dangerous.

While I won't disagree here, most of them are not in the fittest of physical shape.

What's wrong with chess being a sport? But then I guess video games would be called a sport. You're right. :P
