Sonic 3, which is improved when combined with the Sonic & Knuckles expansion.
Sonic 2 is pretty wicked as well. It was among the first games I have ever beat, the first being Lion King on the Genesis (gotta say, Disney movie based games on the Genesis were pretty dern good).
...that was the FIRST game you ever beat? Geez. Next you're going to be telling me the second was Ecco the Dolphin. (which I STILL haven't beat...)sonicphc
The Lion King was not that difficult really. Only real hard spots were when you are Adult Simba. The 2nd to last level is a pain (especially where you have to fend off 3 or 4 hyenas at once), but Scar is quite easy to beat. To finish him, you just have to chuck him over the edge after punching his face a LOT.
I played only the 2nd one, couldn't figure out what to do.

Problem is, the majority of this are "which of the original Genesis titles was your favorite?" Now, people can say Sonic Adventure 2 or Sonic Colors as well. :P Not me though, I still root on Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Anyone who doesn't love that game doesn't get what Sonic's about. I even have a nperfect original copy of the game, and that's gonna be worth a fortune in years to come.
Or people never played it. Like me, a recent attack of cheapness (and expiration of the coupon I planned to use on it) made me decide to wait on getting it, again.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is probably my favorite because of the memories I have with it. Sonic Colors would have to be my favorite 3D Sonic game. Ryagan
I agree Sonic 2 is my favorite game in the series as well. Sonic Colors is actually 2.5D which gives you both 2D and 3D game play. Sonic Adventure is my favorite 3D Sonic game it never gets old.
SA1 was good, but too much other people (and fishing, WHY THE HELL DID THEY PUT FISHING IN A SONIC GAME?!! BIG DOES NOTHING FOR THE STORY BESIDES CRASH A PLANE WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN DONE BY HAVING IT FALL OFF THE EGG CARRIER!!!!) SA2 was better, but still too much other people. Some variety is good, but the older games had plenty of variety just by having different level layouts. They should have just done with the main Sonic esque style, but give Tail and Knux special levels that require climbing and flying. They could have kept the shooting for Tails, but put him on foot and have the levels more about platforming than shooting. Robotnik could ride around his Egg-mobile to mirror him.
My personal opinion would be to keep Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles traditional, with Knuckles occasionally having to collect emerald shards as an alternate way to beat the mission, and Tails having a few levels where he steals Eggman's mech for a good explosion time (while otherwise just having levels like Sonic had, only he gets a greater emphasis on platforming than speed). Shadow could stay like Sonic, Rouge could act like Knuckles, and Robotnik could stay the same, with maybe a few on foot levels when Tails steals his walker mech. Just an idea, would never happen though, not with the "back to basics" approach they're doing now.
