Well along with Iphone games, apparently Sega's been working on an arcade Sonic game that's connected to a treadmill to make you run. Sort of taking a piece from his summer Olympic compilation with Mario.

Damnit Sonic stop making us do things that are good for us like exercise. It's bad enough my 3DS encourages me to walk with it and meet people for street passes. lol

When you are in the country in the middle of nowhere, StreetPass isn't even an option anymore.

Why does Sega spend so much effort on weird arcade stuff like this? *flashback to Sega Toylet* I mean, kudos to them for being adventurous and health-conscious and all, but is this really necessary? C'mon, the funding from this could've covered the entire budget for the next Mario/Sonic Olympics crossover. On iOS. Or something.

Because the vast majority of SegaSammy's income comes from Arcades, which are still popular in Japan, and not software.

Arcade stuffs, I get. But 8-player exergames and interactive urinals? I'd love to see how much cold hard profit they gain from ventures like those. Especially since the Sonic Athletics setup will most likely remain an exclusive novelty to that one location, and as far as I know the Toylets have only been sold to a few places. (Full-featured ones are a cool $2000+. Very enticing.)

And can't forget about R&D costs.

But whatever. Next time Sega posts mammoth financial losses, we know what to blame. /sarcasm :P

Ah, allow me to correct sonicphc from last week. He's not always clear. The vast majority of profits come from arcades, which, while still popular in Japan, are on a slow decline, so they need crazy unique things to try and keep people interested. These are probably as despearate moves as they lock. EDIT: Whew. Thank goodnes I know the password of sonicphc from a minute ago. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to edit this and point out what an idiot he is for not disclaiming that he knows very little about the actual state of the Japanese arcade industry and Sega's profits save for a little research he did two years ago for a class.

Actually that makes a lot of sense now that you mention it. I was curious and did a little research myself just now, and it would seem that the Japanese arcade scene is indeed still in decline from what I could gather from the few current sources I could find, particularly thanks to the mobile boom. Guess I better fly out to Japan soon before all of the arcades vanish into thin air, huh? :P

Learning is fun. :D

I just did research on it for a project last week and still have no idea. No one over there wants to actually say anything... That I could find, at least.

Universities should offer a "Japanese Arcade Research Specialist" degree or something. Seems to be a popular topic of interest around here. :P

Yeah... The problem is, that requires research on it to begin with. You'd need someone to make the degree, become an expert on it, and then be aghast when his data's now irrelevant anyway.

True. Many degrees universities offer nowadays have been irrelevant for years. But if there's money to be made, why argue their practicality. :P
