I'm gonna give you guys a heads up: RANT TIME!
My personal favorite is Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It had everything right and if it just had that tiny extra oomph it would have been perfection. In fact it is the closest thing to perfect a game can get with length, graphics (for its time), level design, etc. However, don't get me wrong. I am in no way a right wing Sonic fan (Whoozwah and I have established Sonic fandom, and it turns out Retro fans are right wings). I am in no way a left wing, thinking every new release is a great title. I happen to be one of those inbetweeners that sees things analytically and notices what's good and what isn't. And IMO, Sonic Rush Adventure could have been even better than Sonic & Knuckles (JUST S&K, S3&K is too good). Sonic Rush Adventure, which I recently finished off, Extra Boss and all, has to be one of the best Sonic games I ever played. It had plenty of levels to blast through, both normal length and snipet sized. And here's a shocker: a gimmick actually worked. The sea travel aspect, even though you can argue the idea was a rip of WindWaker, worked well and was a blast, and I especially loved the first boat's control, as it kept the speed of a Sonic game, and just said "Here's a boat, go nuts."
Sonic Rush Adventure now would be a good candidate to be my favorite Sonic game if I didn't recognize S3&K as a single unit. In fact, I'd love it personally if in my tournament I saw it come down to Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Rush Adventure, because those happen to be my two favorite Sonic games and the most deserving, IMO. I say IMO because I know someone like whoozwah or another right wing Retro lover will blow my ideal Final Match idea to pieces. But again, my opinion is my opinion and I will stand by it. Heck, if I hadn't played Sonic & Knuckles, I'd have said Sonic Rush Adventure was my favorite game. The game's last piece of story after obtaining the Sol and Chaos Emeralds was a great experience and the boss wass even better than the Sonic Rush Extra Boss. It may not quite be as good as the Sonic & Knuckles Doomsday Zone boss, but IMO Sonic Rush Adventure had one of the best extra bosses ever in a Sonic game.
So as I near the end of this rant, know this: Not all new Sonic games are trash. Not all old games were so excellent. It's really just based off how much effort did the developer put in and Dimps was spot on with Sonic Rush Adventure, while Sonic Team was spot on with Sonic & Knuckles. Let these two titles be the highlight of a Sonic fan's collection, because these two games are the paramount, and with the Advance and Rush titles backing the Neo Sonic fan, Neo Sonic fans can hold their heads high on this occasion.
End rant.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my favorite. I like being able to play as Sonic and Tails simultaneously, and being able to fly as Tails. Additionally, Knuckles makes a great addition to the gameplay.. It has the core Sonic characters in it and it uses them well. The plot is very epic. The levels were large, fast, and amazing. The bosses were also a warm welcome.Genetic_Code
High five on someone agreeing with me! :D
I should probably pop in here and say something to the effect of "durpa durpa rabble rabble, play teh old gaimez u n00bs" but I don't care.
I've been extremely vocal on this board about my partiality towards to old ones for long enough that it's just assumed now.

Whoozwah, I feel your pain... I am holding back a rant right now...
Sonic kind of had multiple Dreamcast games guys. Which one?
Shuffle (Please don't say yes)
Adventure
Adventure 2Cloud_765
Shuffle was horrendous. It was even worse than Sonic '06. It's not even a badly made game and I enjoyed one or two of the minigames. But unlike Mario Party, Sonic Shuffle was 1% minigames, 99% tedious TEDIOUS TEDIOUS card shuffling and boardgame. Argh, what a disgrace.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles was always my favorite since I first played it when I was 5

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle would come in second
S3&K, Riders, Secret Rings, and the Rushes are all remarkable IMO.
-SpikyBlueHero-
Agreed. I'll admit, I did like the first Riders. The story sucked and the learning curve was steep but I actually had a decent amount of fun with it. Complaining about Sonic on a hoverboard is like saying Mario Kart sucks because Mario isn't jumping. At least that wasn't a blatant Mario Kart clone (see Sonic Drift).
I didn't bother with the sequel after Spikey's review. Plus given Riders isn't not exactly a pick up and play game and if they make another, online play is a must and it was stupid that Riders:Zero Gravity didn't have online PvP races.
But of the modern games I did like Heroes, Secret Rings and both Rushes.
I think that if critics had more time to expend on Sonic Riders, reivews would have been much more favorable than they turned out to be. They've gotta give SEGA props for innovating instead of mimicking.
I can't believe I spent $50 on its sequel, though. At the time I reviewed Zero Gravity, it still hovered around that price point, so it was more difficult for me to recommend it then. Now, however, you can pick the game up at a significantly lower cost (new, $15-$30). I'd look into it further (beyond my review) and consider trying it during the summer game drought, Kbaily.
Sonic 3 & knuckles I LOOOOOOOOVE IT it is my favorite sonic game ever
shadowlink8P
It is a combined game. It is TWO GAMES combined into one. It is therefore still two games. NOT one.
Why does everyone think Sonic 3 & Knuckles is one game and that Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 are not full games? They were released at separate times, meaning they were meant to be played separate.
Hands down, Sonic Advance 3 got me into Sonic. Actually, my Sonic fandom started because of it.Cloud_765I heard its good I gotta try it
I liked sonic shuffle although it kinda copied Mario Party
Sonic 3 & Knuckles was a masterpiece
Ahhhhhh old SEGA was a time of SEGA's strong-points

Cloud_765
SEGA originally intended for Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knux to be combined onto one cartridge, but due to deadlines and cost issues, it was split into two. There was even a pricey 34 megabit cart in the works. And, not to mention there's tons of visible similarities between the pair, easily seen from something as simple as Sonic 3's level select. (Some of S&K's music tracks are featured there.)

Who cares it was a GREAT game PERIOD
cool apart, better together.
The unabridged experience > the sum of its parts
whoozwah
That is the better argument. I would have accepted this, Spikey! :P
That atatement is all too true. Great game apart, but when put together, the ubergame made as a result cannot be outmatched by any other Sonic game.
IMO, Rush Adventure is almost that good.
I'll let you off, SpikyBlueHero, because you're such a cool person. :PCloud_765
