My parents got me the Atari 2600 in 1992 which was actually my first gaming console before I got into SNES and the only game I had on was E.T. ET doesn't deserve all the hate. I've actually beaten it. At least, I think I did. It looked like a ship came down from the top of the screen and took my in-game avatar away, so I think I won. So yes, it sucked, but it was nowhere near the stinker everyone likes to say it was after watching the Document Video on Xbox. That said, did you ever play it?

It's 'hated' because it's blamed for the crash of the market in 1983. It wouldn't be so bad if the game was the best on the system, but it's not anywhere close (or so I believe)...

Haven't played it, but I did watch that documentary. Seems like the game gets a pretty bad rap, but shouldn't be blamed for the failure of Atari and video games. That documentary shed some interesting info on how the game was made and all. The creator was forced to produce something in 5 weeks. If you consider that I'm sure the game isn't the worst of all-time.

I've never played it, but to me, it looks pretty standard for an Atari 2600 game. As mentioned, I think the real reason it's so hated is because the failure of the game led to the video game crash, so people just start assuming that it must be the worst video game ever. When AVGN finally reviewed it, he also disagreed with it being called the worst game ever too.

No, it was not the worst game, there were even more terrible ones, ET is iconic not for being bad, it´s iconic because it represents the pinnacle of an era plagued by pos games, it´s the moment when the Titanic hit the iceberg.

Nope. I preferred games such as Pitfall, Missile Command, and Galaxian.

That said, I didn't even know there was a game crash at the time. It's not like games and consoles disappeared. They never went away. I kept on happily playing on my Atari 2600 until the NES came along.

As a kid I really enjoyed E.T. and used to play through it several times a day. I won't try and pretend that it was a great game, but it is far from the worst game of its time and most people who say that it is probably never played it.

ET is actually not that bad. It was just the straw that broke the camels back.

I played it back in the 80's I could never figure the game out . I moved on to pole position. Back in the 80's durring the video game crash there were bargain bins full of Atari games at my local toy store. My buddy and I would always dig through it. They were only a buck or two. Every penny we got we hit the bargain bin. I had a mountain of Atari games. I had some rare Atari games that are big bucks now a days. I through my Atari and all the games in the garbage. I couldn't get rid of it no one wanted it. Everyone had moved on to the nes by then.

I had a copy of E.T. for my 2600 back in the mid 80s and recall being completely baffled by the "gameplay". I remember spending most of my time trying to get E.T. out of the random holes he would fall into.. very weird game. It always amuses me and brings back memories when it's brought up as the worst game of all time.. I would concur that it's at least a contender for that title!

Not even close. There were a plethora of awful games made for the Atari 2600 that helped lead to the crash.

E.T. sucks! I had no idea where to go and kept falling in that damn pit. However, the worst game I ever played was Total Recall (NES).

I didn't know there was a Total Recall game on NES. I guess it was an overlooked game.

E.T. is considered one of the most catastrophic event in video game history because it embodies both the end and the means of how greed can sink an entire market for several years.
