Would Romney in the Senate be a positive thing for the country?

It seems like Romney wants to take Orrin Hatch's senate seat after he retires. Given his willingness to go against Trump I think this could actually be a good thing for the country provided he keeps it up. Do you guys see any merit in this belief?

Mittens is pretty moderate compared to other Republicans so sure, I’d say it’d be okay for the country. Whoever challenges Romney will almost definitely be an extremist since it’s Utah.

Plus he could potentially get some of the republicans in Utah into a more moderate mindset over time should he win. Maybe not with the presidential vote, but with other offices perhaps.

Romney isn't a part of the Freedom Caucus nuthouse, but he's every bit for the Republican policy proposals I'd like to avoid.

Romney would be an improvement, that's for sure. The Republican party needs a "good" Republican, I mean McCain doesn't have much longer, and when he is gone, there goes the yardstick for the Republicans of yore.

The problem is that he probably would not do enough or have enough pull to reign in the GOP, bring it back to its senses.

Romney is very competent. Many may disagree with some of his views, but he knows how to get shit done for the people. Romenycare for MA and the Salt Lake Olympics for example. God I wish we had him as president instead of Drumpf.

Taking over for Orrin Hatch, yes Romney would be a step up.

Not really. I want more Liberals. Even with some of their flaws, I do support most of their policies and agree with their values. I'm socially and fiscally Liberal, and proud of it too.

As a Utahn...I can confirm this. No Senator that could win here would vote in my interest, but I'd take Mitt over MANY of the CRAZY people here. Utah is like a whole other country. I only live here because my business does pretty well. But the culture is horrid.

Romney is a republican so of course he will be a good thing for the country.

As long as he keeps the seat all is good.

Democratic values - Being soft, More federal control, less state rights , disregard for law and order , disregard for individuals right when it´s a group they do not like

Republican values - Strong leadership, less federal control, more state rights

Etc. etc. etc.

@Jacanuk: Republican values - Strong leadership (really, where?), less federal control (unless you have a vagina, in which case let me tell you how to use it), more state rights (except in Colorado and the 30 states that have some form of legalization).

I'm not gonna defend the Democrats, but if we're being honest, R's don't actually stand for anything other than what will get them re-elected. Used to be, we needed a man of strong character to lead the country, then Trump came along and all of the sudden "we're not appointing a Sunday School teacher." Used to be a law and order party, then Trump came along and we found out law and order only applies when it's not you being investigated. Used to be all about veterans, but then Trump came along slandered one hero and now has his bois going after another (Mueller) while talking about how disrespectful it is to kneel before a football game....and, oh by the way, let's privatize the VA over the clamoring of veterans. And you can say you don't like Trump, but show me one elected R that hasn't fallen in the line when the votes are being tallied. The party stands for nothing right now, and that's a shame, because we need competing ideas in politics.

anyway, Romney is fine. At least he won't go around reminding everyone of how poor he was that one time.

Well, beside Trump Republicans have a strong leadership

Also about the states making cannabis legal. That has no bearing on federal level and it´s still illegal. So the FEDERAL government upholding the law has nothing to do with states rights when they are still a member of United States of America who together chose to enter into a union with a central government.

So if those republicans pro cannabis want it to be legal, then work for a federal law that makes it so.

But yes Romney is fine but thank god he never made it to the white house.

Well, considering that you can join the military and sign on to get a education , the money is spent on education.

But to be fair it would be good if more money was spent on making education free like in some european countries.

I don't think education in the military eats up a large portion of the budget. I meant education for children though. From first grade through high school.

I'm not sure what you are talking about.

Perhaps you should put IMO after all of your posts in this thread. GOP values don't seem to be working well in practice.

P.S. Climate Denial, which is mostly Republican, is objectively worse for this country than anything you subjectively perceive as bad from Democrats.

I am not talking education in the actual military , i am talking about the option people have to sign up and get help with their tuition after serving.

That is by no means a small thing

Republicans stand for racism, sexism, homophobia, and screwing over poor people. It's why @Jacanuk is so willing to vote for them, despite their major **** ups.

Trump only has the party's core values. The only reason establishment and smarter Republicans hate him is because he's blunt about their shitty policies. They also hate how he took over and are scared of his nutcase fans, but that's another story.

They don't care about that. They just want their racism, sexism, and homophobia. A poor white person in the South and rust belt states will literally screw themselves over if it means women are subjected and a person of color, particularly black, is suffering.
