Trump caught Biden in a lot of lies, and showed he doesn't have the common sense or awareness of the world around him to actually lead. He's shown Biden to be the puppet for China that he is, and got Biden to say a number of things contradictory to what Biden has said in the past, and a lot of black voters will realize Trump was absolutely right on Biden being part of the crime bill, having the opportunity to fix it, and not giving enough of a shit to actually do it. A problem, Trump has actually made progress on and why many blacks are supporting him now.

I will say this though, I thought the moderator did a pretty decent job this time around. I know where her political leanings are, it's no secret, but she still managed to be mostly fair about it.

Trump destroyed Biden this time. He mostly remained calm. Biden stumbled all over the place. Checking his watch like he was ready to leave. Even CNN gave Trump some praise right now. But still felt it was a tie lol.

To many lies told by “The Big Guy " he has a scandal looming that at any time now will sink him. Trump's issue is he has lost a step, that is a 47 year old corrupt compromised criminal he’s debating and he needs to let it be known loud and clear.

Trump did slightly better than last time but Joe still had the edge. Trump deflected several key questions, still interrupted Joe a few times and tried VERY hard to bring up the stupid Hunter Biden story on numerous occasions. But I'm glad that this time Joe wasn't having any of it and quickly shot them down. The most hilarious thing Trump said was definitely that no president had done more for blacks than him since Abraham Lincoln! Every bit Trump tried call Joe out on, Joe answered with tact and confidence. I was pretty happy with his performance. I love how Joe said that he wouldn't just be a president for the people who voted for him. It would be so refreshing to have that compared to Trump.

From what I saw Joe carried himself better and actually answered the questions instead of making personal attacks. Trump just spewed BS the whole time. “I’ll have a vaccine in a couple weeks” yeah okay... that’s not happening so why would he even say that so people can hold that against him.

Who's to blame for the separation of children from their parents at the border?

Biden and Trump sparred over immigration and Trump's policy of separating children from their parents at the border. The president was asked how he'd reunite the reportedly more than 500 children whose parents cannot be located.

“A lot of these kids come out without the parents,” Trump said, claiming that they were brought by "coyotes" or brought to the U.S. by cartels.

Biden countered that those children "came here with parents. They [the Trump administration] separated them at the border to make it a disincentive to come here to begin with."

Biden is accurate here. While some teenagers do come across the border unaccompanied, the children in question were separated from their parents. Those separations were discussed by the Trump administration as a way to deter people from crossing the border.

Trump's “zero tolerance” policy aimed to prosecute every single illegal border crossing, including asylum-seekers. To do so, the administration separated children, including babies, from their parents or legal guardians because the adults were being detained and prosecuted.

Who built the 'cages' that held children separated from their parents at the border?

The president also claimed that the "cages" his administration has been criticized for holding those children in were built by the Obama-Biden administration.

“Let me tell you, they built cages,” Trump said.

That's true, though there was no widespread Obama-era policy of separating parents and children. Trump and his administration have previously tried to justify its family separation policy and defend against accusations from Democrats that the president put "kids in cages" by saying Obama started it.

The Obama administration separated migrant children in limited cases, primarily around questions of safety or potential child trafficking, but “not as a matter of policy or practice,” according to former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.

After a 2014 surge in unaccompanied children and women at the border, the Obama administration did detain families in “cages,” or chain link structures, where children were generally kept for the mandated guideline of several days. It also built emergency shelters for children and a detention center for families, some of which have been used to house children during the Trump administration.

Biden won on every point, and it wasn't even close.

Biden put forward clear policies, addressed the American people, and found the best way to avoid Trump dragging him down into the mud - he refused to engage with Trump's bullshit claims.

Trump put forward unfounded conspiracy theories and constant attacks. He didn't raise any of his own policies, he just attacked and then changed the subject. Attacked and changed the subject. Over and over.

Biden's points hit harder:

  • On foreign policy: Trump accused Biden of not taking action against North Korea. Biden hit back, saying Trump befriended and legitimised North Korea, while Obama and Biden treated them sternly to prevent them from being a threat.
  • On healthcare: Trump accused Biden of "socialist medicine", or whatever that buzzword he kept repeating was. Biden clearly explained how his healthcare plan is better, how every American has a right to affordable healthcare, and how Trump hasn't actually done anything beneficial in this area.
  • On bank accounts and secret payments: Trump peddled the conspiracy theory that Biden is in the pocket of Ukraine, China, Russia. Biden explained that Trump's own people investigated and cleared him, and that Trump solicited political help from Ukraine, and that Trump has business dealings with China, and that he is far more open with his tax records than Trump has been.
  • On the environment: I'm not really sure what Trump's policy is - he just seemed to attack Biden's? Biden explained why the environment is critically important, and what his plan was to improve the environment while generating jobs, and why Trump's interpretation of his plan was totally wrong.
  • On raising minimum wage: Trump said it's a terrible thing would hurt small businesses. Then the moderator pointed out that Trump himself was considering raising minimum wage, and Trump had to turn around and put it as a state issue.

It went on and on. Trump was constantly on the attack, but the attacks didn't land, and Biden's counter-points shot him down. I especially enjoyed when Biden called Trump out for wanting to bankrupt Democrat states - and reminded Trump he is supposed to be the president of the united states.

I think the final debate question really sealed the deal - during your inauguration speech, what would you say to people who didn't vote for you?

Trump's answer was a crazed attack on Biden, which...wouldn't make any sense to say on inauguration day.

Biden's answer was about hope, science, and repairing the economy. That's the presidential answer, and I think this is the first night when Biden seemed like the right fit for the job.

Biden was good on the first section (Covid) and then fell off after that.

He was probably fed all of the questions before the debate and just started to forget how he was supposed to answer after that.

trump is right...I couldn't believe the nonsense coming out of joe bidens mouth. He flat out said he would give legal status to 12 million illegal residents, so called dreamers. Isn't that just opening a can of worms. Do other countries normally give legal status to illegals coming into the country, jumping fences? Its absolutely ridiculous. None of trumps policies are wrong. If you want to claim asylum, then do so in the dozens of countries you passed through in order to illegally enter the US.

Absolutely insane. Old joe is off his rocker...you want to grant anyone who illegally inters the US citizenship, so why not just flat out open the borders, anyone who wants to come can come.

Share your space, your homes, your food, your healtcare and the life you have built for yourself with the billions of people all over the world.

If you agree to that, then no patents, trademarks, intellectual property rights, contract law, nothing. The middle class aren't going to suffer this nonsense alone.

You always say Trump wins, even if he doesn’t. So your opinion means nothing and black people don’t like Trump and will vote against him in large amounts.

Watching that sketchy Biden fellow attempt to appeal to the people of The United States Of America in the same relatable manner as your President Of The United States Of America repeating "come on!" discussing deceased people at a dinner table was very poor form.

Overall it seems your President Of The United States Of America learned well from the first debate, effectively timing his executions perfectly forcing that Biden fellow to justify himself multiple times defensively.

Very impressive stuff.

Oy Vey. Not a single person is proposing giving citizenship to "anyone who illegally inters". And there are not 12 million Dreamers, it's more like just under 2 million. And to circle back to the big picture, virtually every economist agrees immigration is a net positive for the US so your idea of the middle class shouldering some type of burden resulting from immigration is just not based in reality.

I don't know where your ideas come from but it seems like literally everything you're saying on immigration comes straight from the GOP. And here's a hint: they lie.

I suspect we weren't watching the same debate.

Biden stammered, but he also offered clear policies and responses to every single question. Trump thought he could bully Biden ("you never want to talk about...", "you don't want to answer..."), and Biden said "Sure, I'll answer" and did so.

Trump had a lot of gusto, but barely talked about his own policies (besides his usual lies e.g. "I've done more for black americans than any president ever. With the exception of Abraham Lincoln. Possible exception"). Trump had no substance. He didn't defend any of his own problems - all he did was attack Biden over and over, which didn't work because it just gave Biden more air-time to thoroughly explain why Trump is lying and how Biden's policies are better.

Also, Trump barely managed to stay on topic the entire debate. Any time Trump attacked, Biden shot him down with detailed answers. Then when Biden counter-attacked, Trump would make some ridiculous claim, interrupt the moderator's fact-checking/follow-up questions, and then change topics. It happened over and over throughout the debate (e.g. fracking).

For all of Trump's claims about not being a politician, just about everything he said was a weasel-y deflection or classic political mud-slinging.

Trump did a lot better this go compared to the first. But the first one was a crap shoot all around.

You weren't impressed with Biden's response to Trump's wild claims?

I thought Biden did okay in the circumstances. He said:

  • During the impeachment, every single person who works for Trump said Biden did his job "impeccably", with absolutely nothing out of line
  • Trump was the one with questionable Ukraine dealings, when he tried to solicit the Ukrainian president to help his political campaign
  • Biden hasn't made money off China, unlike Trump.

Those were three decent points that Trump had absolutely no answer for, so he just blathered and repeated the same conspiracy theory.

Trump is finished. I see district polling in key areas (which showed red flags for Clinton in working class areas in the Midwest) where Trump is underperforming 2016 by 8-10 points. Trump is doing slightly better in Hispanic districts, especially Florida, but historically polls underestimate Hispanic Democratic support.

This debate may have sealed it for Biden. Biden seems to do much betterin blue vs red debates than in blue vs blue ones. I do think progressives and Trump supporters underestimated his debating ability, especially from his poor primary debate performances.

I think the state swing polls are actually underpolling Biden instead of Trump (unlike 2016 which underpolled Trump) based on district polling. Biden will win pretty handily.

However, I think Biden isn't winning this race, its Trump that is losing. Overall, Biden is not running a great campaign, he is just getting lucky breaks due to Trump's own goals. I may make a topic on that in the future.

It wasn't even used but maybe once for each side. This moderator simply did a better job than Chris Wallace and wasn't trying to debate Trump or defend Biden like Wallace was. She was actually able to put her bias aside mostly.

Trump improved a lot from his previous debate. But he still didnt get to Biden's level.

Biden won. But kudos to trump on passing his REALLY low bar.

@Planeforger: Question: What are your thoughts on the fracking lie Biden obviously told?

As I said in the fracking thread, I try to approach these things with some skepticism - so a cut-down video of sound bites raises a bunch of red flags.

But hey, maybe Biden changed his tune? It isn't a major issue I've been following, considering how I'm not American and obviously not voting for Biden.

Anyway, I'm amused that Trump supporters are suddenly so concerned about politicians telling the truth. It'll be interesting to see the fact checks for this one, on both sides.

@Planeforger: Context or not - he said it and when pressed by Trump on it - he lied. There’s no getting around it. I mean, the only way, the ONLY WAY to get out of it is to claim early stages of dementia and say he forgot? Go that route Biden - you may actually get respect out of millions of Americans who know you LIED.

Agreed it is amazing, trump lies every single day but that is fine with the apologists here.

It is the height of hypocrisy.

From what I've seen of Biden's videos, it doesn't look like he plans to outright ban fracking. All the videos I've seen of the clips sounds like he's alluding to phasing it out. However, it's still a poor idea. The cheaper energy is for American families, farmers, and manufacturers, the better off American families are.
