The Internal Revenue Service will issue refunds to taxpayers even if the U.S. government shutdown extends into the filing season, a decision that may reduce political pressure on Congress and President Donald Trump to reach a deal to reopen the federal government.

“Tax refunds will go out,” the acting director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, Russell Vought, told reporters at a briefing on Monday.

Thank God, for a moment I thought this shutdown might actually affect donors!

This significantly eases pressure on Trump to end the shutdown. This thing could go on for a fair bit longer (although maybe they could make it a shutdown in name only?).

Great, now the shutdown can go on forever.

Nice that all our national parks are turning into garbage heaps by this shutdown. Someone should take a picture of human sewage on the side of the roads and the garbage strewn across the land with #MAGA underneath it. What a brilliant decision to leave them open while being unstaffed.

But then again, Republicans make it a point to destroy the environment at every opportunity, so this shutdown works in their favor.

@MirkoS77: great, people who were making fun of third world countries are not going to be laughing now because these parks and others areas are getting dirty and smelly.

@MirkoS77: the worst part is when they go back they're going to have to spend a lot of time playing catch up, instead of doing their regular tasks. Could have all been avoided?

Why is that? Have you benefited from the shutdown?

@mrbojangles25:

Not personally, but our country has been saving money. Also if these non-essential segments of the government can be shut down with no impact, then why do they exist?

These usually cost money.

So the government not paying back tax they owe people has no impact? Are you for real?

You're not saving. Eventually they will be paid. In the meantime they are struggling and security is being ignored even thought the hypocrite in chief is whining this is over security.

@mighty-lu-bu: if they're going cut these services and save the money why the hell is the deficit at 1 trillion. Why isn't trump paying down the debt??

The IRS giving money back is now possible in a shut down? What a joke. Take that money and pay down the debt

Well, the government being shut down is a good thing.

@mrbojangles25: I’m hearing the impact on our national parks will take years to recover from. Not just picking up the trash and emptying the sewage, which will happen relatively quickly after funding resumes, but the damage it will cause to the ecosystem before that happens that will linger for years. This, aside from those out of work, is what really depresses me.

But hey, MAGA! Republicans favor stripping our national natural treasures of protections to be able to frack and drill for oil, so what do they care? Yea, these people really care for this country.

@MirkoS77: Well the stupid thing is that the parks are apparently open during the shutdown? Just not staffed? We have a phrase for that, it's called "does not compute".

Yeah, the loss far outweighs the wall funding Trump asked for by now I think.

I don't get refunds. I'm lucky if I break even.

Some countries have interest rates both ways.

I wish that was the case here then I could stack it in, but right now no way in hell I pay more in then I need to.

That's usually the cheapest option for the people given that you have enough to pay it all off right away when the bill arrives.

Pfff... My refund is shit this year anyway. I worked more last year than any year previously and am getting back less than in previous years. Largely because of that goddamn penalty for not having health insurance. Thanks, Obama. Even without that penalty, my refund is curiously smaller than usual.
