On the political compass, Trump falls pretty close to the top-right (especially with the new moves towards fascist policies). Most DNC candidates are right of centre economically, and above centre socially (Warren is probably the only one that falls below centre). Bernie not only falls left of centre economically (only slightly) but below centre socially.
He's the odd duck out there, and because of the two-party system in the US, he has to run on the DNC ticket in order to get anywhere.
It also doesn't help that the Republicans and their corporate masters have been building a strong case against any sort of left-wing/socialist policy since the beginning of the 20th century. Herbert Hoover had business interests in Russia, and had the 1917 Russian Revolution not happened, he would have ended up the richest man in the world at the time.
Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Geroge HW Bush... they've all been building the system in place today, private prisons, a medical system based on profit over treatment and endless war-profiteering. All backed by strategic over-throwing/supressing of any socialist/left-wing movements around the world (check out the 20th century history of Central America and notice when the US "invaded" to "bring them democracy").
After the fall of the Soviet Union, "The Red Menace" disappeared, so they had to invent another "big bad" to fight endless wars against.
Enter Osama bin Laden and the US-trained freedom fighters in 2001...
Even Hillary Clinton is still parroting the "Red Menace" thing with Bernie these days, trying to drum up fear over his working class empowerment. It's almost comical if it weren't so frightening how effective it is at dissuading people from supporting Bernie.
