For Russia's triumphant Putin, more muscle-flexing likely, especially on international stage Not many "viable alternative candidates" to vote for, sadly. And given the obvious, visible corruption, there was no way there would be any other result.

What is your take on this outcome? Personally, I am not surprised given the corruption. I would have preferred Pavel Grudinin but oh well.

Expected this outcome. I doubt Putin will ever lose an election in Russia.

I think the only uncertainty before this election was whether Putin was going to be able to get 70% of the votes, not whether he would win...

Whoever has the power, makes the rules. That's how the world works around here.

Putin is an evil corrupted man who enjoys invading/bullying other white nations, but he has never bully or started wars with non-white nations. Putin being elected is good for Africa, China, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, Iran, Syria, India, etc but it isn't good for nations that are majority white

Well, unless he does a China, he can´t run again in 2024.

But good for Putin and I am sure he will spend his last term doing what he has been doing.

Putin cant run for a 3rd consecutive term due to Russian law putting a limit at 2 terms. So unless it´s changed he is done in 2024.

@Jacanuk: key word being consecutive. He did two terms, then had a break as Prime Minister, then he did another one and and has now just started his fourth term. The way the Russian constitution is written you can keep following this pattern till you die of old age.

Yep, read about his clever trick to get around it by doing the switch, so he would have to step down in 2024 and do another term as PM and in 2030 he would be close to 80

Will be interesting though to see what he does in 2024.

The guy who stood any kind of chance against him, Alexi Navalny, was straight up banned from the election.

2024? That's a long time to deal with Putin. Oi.

If it wasn't rigged, well, that might actually be scarier because it means there are a lot more nationalists in Russia than we (or I, at least) thought.

At this point, he'll spend the next 4 years consolidating power and do the China effect.

He won fair and square though. Just look at his political oponents. Also, i have russian friends i met while studying in China. These are milenials, mind you... and for them Putin was a living god. I don't even want to imagine the older folks. The only way Putin will lose power is if there is a massive economic crisis and the people start losing hope on him. But even with a recession he's still the leader Russians want.

I wouldn't be surprised if he got embalmed like Lenin after his death, was rolled out to the public view on the election years and still won the elections up to the year 2678.

Didn't he remove the term limit some years ago?

It´s still there.

As long as it doesn't lead to another Cold War, I'm okay with this :)

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they found a way to artificially lengthen his life well into over hundred years, ala Robert House (Fallout: New Vegas reference).

There aren't viable alternative candidates because Putin has them removed from the ballot. Picking your opponents is like election rigging 101, Putin's already at the 500 level.

Wow, winning close to 80% of the vote totally seems legit. What cracks me up is that these guys just don't have the self confidence to even try to make it believable. Like 60% of the vote. No, ego too strong to get any less than 77%
