Not much stated in the story yet.

He told reporters in the Oval Office that she would be leaving the post at the end of the year after doing "an incredible job".

Joined by the former South Carolina governor in the Oval Office, he invited her to come back in a different role. "You can have your pick," he said.

Mrs Haley was confirmed as US envoy to the UN in January 2017.

Mr Trump said Mrs Haley had told him six months ago she wanted to take some time off.

She told reporters that despite speculation, she was not planning to run for president in 2020 and would be campaigning for Mr Trump, who has already announced his re-election bid.

"Thank you, Mr President. It has been an honour of a lifetime," she said alongside Mr Trump.

The president said Mrs Haley "has been very special to me, she has done an incredible job she is a fantastic person very importantly but she is also somebody that gets it".

He said of her role at the UN: "She got to know the players. She got to know China, India, everybody.

"And they like her. And maybe more importantly, they respect her."

Well, she gotta resign if she plans to run against Trump in 2020.

And now before the mid-terms seem as good a time as any.

@Jacanuk: You think someone from within the administration will primary Trump as an incumbent?

I hope you're right, that would be fun.

Yes, I think we for the first time will see an "independent/republican" primary with actually viable candidates other than the normal lunatics from the libertarians or green party.

And just wait, if you thought the primaries in 2016 was a circus, just wait until this one, It´s going to be so much fun watching all the Democrats trying to run especially Avenatti against Warren and Kamala Harris.

Trump´s chances of winning increases by every crazy candidate who jumps out and wants to take part. It´s almost like they want Trump to win re-election and nominate 2 more supreme court justices.

@Jacanuk: I agree that the D primary is shaping up to be a circus act. The biggest question is how many clowns can they fit into the car.

Wouldn't the counter argument for her running be "something women fickle emotions something"? Or is that a low blow these days? :P

Hmm, not so sure she wouldn't lol :D but imagine the mediaheadlines - The battle of the century, forget about Mayweather vs Mcgregor, forget Tyson vs Hollyfield, this is the true "rumble in the jungle 2" In the blue corner we have the former First lady, a lady who made foreign policies look like a walk in the park and in the red corner the "the President who doesn´t believe in Ford and loves to give them an extra squeeze down under"

Democrats won't make the same mistake twice. It's obvious they are pushing for a socialist leaning democrat, seems like the anti-Trump that democracts, especially young ones can get behind. It has to be Warren, second Bernie, but Warren takes the top spot.

That is why I mentioned an independent run.

As you say Trump has record-high approval rating among the Republicans and especially among the evangelists now that Kavanaugh is confirmed.

But with that said I saw the video from the white house, and could it be that she may be geared to take over from either Sessions or Rosenstein, though she wouldn´t need to resign on her own.

You really think the Democrats would make that mistake as well? or you believe the young will actually vote? like after the swift tweet where 65.000 suddenly registered to vote.

We really don't know yet, though. Lets see these midterms to see how the young effect plays out. I'll say if the midterms do swing blue, then we know which direction the party is headed for 2020.

To be honest, other than making money for herself with campaign finances, I don't even know why'd she be running. Republicans will see her as a traitor, democrats already hate her. If anything, she might as well run for congress where she stands a bit more of a chance.

Yup, it does not make sense even as an independent to make a run for the presidency. But it does seem the most likely reason for her to resign now and get the Trump job a bit further away from peoples memory.

Unless after the mid-terms she is appointed to replace Sessions or Rosenstein

It has to be someone who can at least unite the Democratic party and a good portion of the independent voters.

And I do not believe the Democratic Party won't do the same mistake twice until the next election comes.

But the running joke is Ivanka which is just insane, she has absolutely zero qualifications other than she is decent to look at is Trumps daughter.

Maybe she wasn't bombastic enough for Bolton and Pompeo. We need to bring some real fire and brimstone to the UN.

I'm not making a prediction, but imagine this scenario.

The dem primary is a circus, as was mentioned earlier in this thread. It's getting late in the primaries, and no one has taken the "front runner" status. The party is getting worried; we need to quit wasting money on primaries, pick our candidate and start fund raising for the general. And who rides in on her white horse to save the day to unify the party? Non other than Hillary and her prolific fund raising machine.

Not predicting, but it is entirely possible.

The thinking seems to be that after the election Trump will fire either Sessions and/or Mattis and Lindsey Graham, from South Carolina, will be named to one of those posts opening a Senate seat for Haley in SC (where she was previously the governor and her former subordinate is the current governor).

She gets appointed and gains further experience in the Senate.

Governor, UN Secretary and Senator. Can you say Madam President?

First woman President being a Republican? Democrats would self-combust.

In her resignation letter she said a lot of things, but the most telling of all was this bit:

...I have been in public office for fourteen straight years. As a businessman, I expect you will appreciate my sense that returning from government to the private sector is not a step down but a step up.

I don't know why, but the fact that she says Trump more or less views public service as a step down from the private sector just irks me. Taking the office of POTUS should be an honor, something you believe in, even if you support small government.

@mrbojangles25: It always seemed to me like she didn't take her job seriously, never attempted to be diplomatic, took the lazy approach to every issue etc. Basically came into the role with an entitled attitude and behaviour unbecoming of an ambassador to the UN.

I think it's as you said, she views the job of public service as both a chore and a step down from the private sector where she can make a lot more money. Funny how Nikki Haley announces her plans to resign during the same week that a potential ethics investigation is being levelled against her.

Haven't read the thread yet, so it may have been mentioned, Haley will fill Graham's seat once he becomes Trump's AG, who will fire Muller, which will be brought to the Supreme Court were Kavanaugh will be waiting.

I see @Master_Live knows what's up.

I hadn't really thought about this. But fire Mattis? He's well regarded by both sides and Lindsey Graham is somewhat of a war-hawk. On the flip side, how dangerous would it be to fire Sessions? I guess we would need to see the result of the mid term elections. If the Dems don't take back the house Trump would be galvanized and finally get rid of Sessions I suppose.

What Russia thing? have you seen anything in the media the last month.

Anyways, I am not sure why he would fire him, Sessions is a loyal guy, has been in Trump's corner from the very beginning. But the left media keeps on it so if it were to happen it would be because he recused himself from the Russia probe.

Yeah, I want Mattis to remain one of "the adults in the room". But it seems he has fell out of favor.

Trump's on record calling him a democrat now, he's going to leave sooner rather than later. It appears that Trump is shifting his foreign policy towards Bolton and Pompeo.

Here you go https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-60-minutes-interview-president-suggests-defense-secretary-james-mattis-could-be-next-to-leave-cabinet/

"I have a very good relationship with him. I had lunch with him two days ago. I have a very good relationship with him. It could be that he is. I think he's sort of a Democrat, if you want to know the truth," Mr. Trump said of the retired Marine Corps general. "But General Mattis is a good guy. We get along very well. He may leave. I mean, at some point, everybody leaves. Everybody. People leave. That's Washington."
