A lot of people feel like this is motivated by Trumps animosity with CNN and the media as a whole.

What do you guys think?

Don’t really care what his motives are but stopping this merger is a net positive for society so sure, go for it.

Id like to point this out, Trump has done two very progressive things since being president. Stopped this deal and the TPP failed because they knew he wouldnt go with it. Two things his fellow republican Hillary would have LOVED to pass.

Yeah this is one of those issues where people are having a hard time to peg it down. In theory, screw them; but in application: do I really trust trump who has already made it clear that he wants his hand over the medias throat.

Lol. My thoughts too. Not a fan of huge mergers when only a few players.

LOL that wouldn't be a stretch.........nonetheless his tweets and mouth might sink the stoppage.

Thank you. I am not saying this deal is a good thing, but conservatives wouldn't try to block a deal unless they could profit off of it not happening.

Damn. I didn't expect this. From what little I've heard about it, stopping it was the smarter choice.

@perfect_blue: I have a feeling that Obama or Hilary would have let this merger go through. Can't praise trump for doing this though....his motivation was purely to dick over CNN.

Glad he did it too.

Apparently as has been reported they wouldn't have. But don't let me stop your narrative of finger pointng constantly.

The only reason these companies can do this in the first place is because of the 1996 communications act that Bill put in place, a bill that Hillary LOVED. So... its pretty safe to say she would not have undermined her husbands presidency and her own feelings to block this. As for Obama..... who knows? Given the things he did im inclined to believe he would have let it pass but you never know. Add this to the TPP being dropped because they knew Trump wouldnt pass it, i think hes turning out more progressive than Obama.

Why?

Its been less than a year since he has been president, his actions still have an affect on us today. This is no different from when Obama was president and we were still dealing with shit Bush did. Just because we get a new president does not mean legislation wipes clean.

As for the specific argument being made above, the argument people are making is that Obama or Hillary would have done the same as Trump. Basically another form (or extension) of "the democrats are the lesser of two evils", and i personally (and anyone paying attention) knows this to not be true.

@sayyy-gaa: it's not Obama, but Democrats themselves people are sick of. I'm a liberal person, but the way Democrats conduct business is despicable. It took Democrats to push TPP, took them to push NAFTA, took them to push regulations so far that free market competition is worthless, took them to cut regulations against banks. They might look like the party that cares, but they are snakes. And I despise the Republican party and trump, but at least Trump killed off the TPP, he pushed for jobs to be brought back to the US. He might be going all in for tax cuts, but that is not going to pass without a fight. It's under Democrats power that we see the largest rise if huge monopoly wielding corporations. Obama screwed the people over when he bailed out the banks without throwing a single person in jail. The least he could have done is to get his money's worth and reaped a profit as a condition for the bailouts. But he bent over for the elites on that as well.

But do nothing on Sinclair and Tribune, getting one step closer to Trump's version of Chinese and Russian style state TV.

I can't post this Oliver segment enough.

So why are even liberals here praising Trump for this? Because he STILL doesn't deserve it once you remember that he backs a similar plan, but MUCH worse.

Thank you, liberals are the most fickle dog whistle chasing group ever....
