After days of claiming without evidence that Alabama was projected to be hit by Hurricane Dorian, President Donald Trump displayed an apparently doctored map in the Oval Office on Wednesday that showed Alabama to be within the storm's path.

The map Trump displayed was the same as a model produced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration last week showing the hurricane's projected path cutting through central Florida— with one key difference. Where the original projection ended, a smaller, black circle that appeared to be drawn in Sharpie was produced to include Alabama in the model.

I might be wrong, but my gut is telling me that this is a slightly bigger deal than most normal "LOL Trump is a dumb cu nt" situations.

1. This possibly incites needless worry, panic, and hurricane preparation for people west of Dorian's actual path, as they are now worried about a hurricane that's actually not going anywhere near them.

2. This possibly puts people north of Dorian in actual danger, since they may now not believe that they are in the hurricane's path but, in fact, they actually are and now they won't respond appropriately.

3. This is actually straight-up illegal, as Vaasman has already pointed out. This isn't like obstruction of justice with the Mueller probe, where you can kind of weasel-out an argument that obstruction doesn't matter if there's no underlying crime. This is a pretty flagrant, black and white "Trump dun fucked up" situation.

@Jacanuk: Yep, yep, yep.

While in Ireland this week to attend meetings in Dublin, Vice President Mike Pence is staying at the Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in Doonbeg, approximately 180 miles away from Dublin. Pence’s chief of staff Marc Short said the VP was staying at the President’s property due to logistical and security reasons, though he also admitted Trump “suggested” he stay at the resort. In the wake of President Donald Trump indicating that he planned to hold next year’s Group of Seven (G-7) summit at his Doral golf resort in Miami, constitutional law expert Laurence Tribe on Tuesday decried both decisions, saying each violated a separate clause of the U.S. Constitution.

“Memo to POTUS: There are TWO Emoluments Clauses,” Tribe wrote. “The one you’re violating when you line your pocket by having Pence stay at your resort & commute is the Domestic [Emoluments Clause]. The one you’re planning to violate by having the G7 stay at the Doral w/out Congress’s consent is the Foreign [Emoluments Clause].”

What's the big deal about this?

Trump's a moron. He says ignorant, stupid shit daily. Anyone with a single brain cell shouldn't lend one bit of credence into anything he says. If they do, I don't blame Trump. People are nothing but fools if they didn't recognize this dope as the ultimate conman long before he even got elected.

Because it was with an unsigned letter is being bashed by professionals, including former NOAA heads.

NOAA staff warned in Sept. 1 directive against contradicting Trump

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/noaa-staff-warned-in-sept-1-directive-against-contradicting-trump/2019/09/07/12a52d1a-d18f-11e9-87fa-8501a456c003_story.html

NOAA assailed for defending Trump's Hurricane Dorian claim

https://www.aol.com/article/news/2019/09/07/noaa-assailed-for-defending-trumps-hurricane-dorian-claim/23808671/

That effort led NOAA to repudiate a tweet from the National Weather Service the previous weekend assuring Alabamans — accurately — that they had nothing to fear from the hurricane. The weather service is part of NOAA and the tweet came from its Birmingham, Alabama, office.

"This rewriting history to satisfy an ego diminishes NOAA," Elbert "Joe" Friday, former Republican-appointed director of the National Weather Service, said on Facebook. He told The Associated Press on Saturday: "We don't want to get the point where science is determined by politics rather than science and facts. And I'm afraid this is an example where this is beginning to occur."

And more importantly, for actual results: He did end up wrong. NWS was right.

@zaryia: Being "right or wrong" about the weather, especially a rapidly evolving and unpredictable weather system days before it is projected to get close to land, is laughably moot. Bringing in prior former Obama appointees to make partisan jabs is a bore.

I followed the weather service like a mother with its first born child, as my Florida vacation teetered on it. A last, I only knew the day before I was scheduled to leave until I knew with reasonable certainly that Orlando was in the clear.

@Jacanuk: The media has successfully made a mountain out of a mole hill and managed to politicize a hurricane. Secondly, President Trump continued to pander to this idea and remained fixated needlessly on it for days after. Completely idiotic.

@Stevo_the_gamer: In isolation it is a mountain out of a mole hill. In the collective, it is another example of the egoist and narcissist that is the POTUS and the depths that he and the toadies around him will stoop to fuel his self image. If you don't understand why that is bad in general, and especially bad when the person is the POTUS, then I pity you.

Every single one of these things is going to be examined in detail until the mainstream republicans ditch this idiot. Nothing smells worse than people putting narrow political self interest over country.

Sadly, the media and President Trump's detractors are so desperate for any validation that they are willing to make mountains out of mole hills. Trump bathes in the attention and around/around we go.

Nah,

“These are the people risking their lives flying into hurricanes and putting out forecasts that save lives. Never before has their management undercut their scientifically sound reasoning and forecasts,” Dan Sobien, who heads the National Weather Service Employees Organization representing thousands of employees working under NOAA, told The Daily Beast.

Trump politicized his error. The NWS corrected his tweet about AL because it wasn't going to hit AL and it didn't hit AL. He became a big baby about it all.

Trump made a mountain out of a mole hill. He should just have accepted he was wrong and the NWS was right instead of doubling down on being wrong.

“This looks like classic politically motivated obfuscation to justify inaccurate statements made by the boss. It is truly sad to see political appointees undermining the superb, lifesaving work of NOAA’s talented and dedicated career servant.” Another unnamed NOAA official claimed there was no political motivation behind their contradiction of the NWS tweet, but that they simply wanted to clarify a 5 to 20 percent chance of tropical-storm-force winds affecting a small part of Alabama. Never mind that those wind speeds scarcely register, or that the acting NOAA director briefed Trump himself on August 29, using the same Hurricane Dorian map that the president would later presumably sharpie over to falsely include Alabama.

The NWS on Saturday also sent a letter to its Birmingham employees, thanking them. “We want to assure you that we stand behind our entire workforce and the integrity of the forecast process, including the incredible scientific, technical and engineering skill you demonstrated for this event,” it read. “We saw first hand that our integrated forecast process works, and we continue to embrace and uphold the essential integrity of the entire forecast process as it was applied by ALL NWS offices to ensure public safety first and foremost.”

This gets weirder and weirder,

NOAA Told Its Scientists to Keep Their Mouths Shut About Trump's False Forecast: Report

https://gizmodo.com/noaa-told-its-scientists-to-keep-their-mouths-shut-abou-1837968811

“This is the first time I’ve felt pressure from above to not say what truly is the forecast. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around. One of the things we train on is to dispel inaccurate rumors and ultimately that is what was occurring— ultimately what the Alabama office did is provide a forecast with their tweet, that is what they get paid to do.”

WTF?

He said Alabama would be likely hit AND much harder than expected on Sept 1. This was an inaccurate prediction even for that time (and turned out to be incorrect), and the NWS called that out and also gave an accurate prediction which turned out to be correct.

Just to be clear, Alabama was never at risk for the kind of hurricane-force winds the Bahamas and southeastern states saw this past week. A few forecasts, including some from the agency, showed a sliver of Alabama at low risk for tropical-storm-force winds. So for NOAA to publically support Trump’s claim, as the agency did Friday in a press release, constitutes a heavy blow to the credibility of an agency much of the country depends on in times of weather crises.

And in true Trump fashion, he for some reason triple downed on being wrong.

lol cut this both sides bullshit. It's the media's job to report, and so they'll report the stupid things the president does even when the president is squarely in the wrong, and being totally petty when called on it. By the time he was starting this fight Alabama was completely cleared, do we really need to repost this sharpied map in case you forgot to look at the op? There's no "but maybe he was right u guiz, that cruel media for calling it!" Don't be a doof for his sake.

@zaryia: yeah you are, you are harping on something the average citizin sees as meaningless, not a big deal, small potatoes, fart in the wind.

Why do you think Trump keeps riling up the media about it on Twitter, hes made like 6 posts about it, he wants you to harp on this, because its a stupid thing to focus on. It also makes the media look stupid, why is Trump selling sharpies with his name on them after this??? Because he's got you off the plot thats why. You think trump cares about being wrong about a sharpie and a map?? I have friends in flordia, they prepped all week for the storm, it missed them entirely, everyone thought they were going to get it bad up to the day of. Surprise surprise, weather can be unpredictable, in the US the outer banks NC got it the worse, everyone thought it was hitting flordia.

Everyone has seen the prediction maps with over 100 lines as possible routes. You never know for sure, but this controversy is still entertaining! its a good reflection of all the idocracy.

There are still people that think Trump can be impeached for this incident due to a law about lying about the weather, so there's that as a reason people won't let #sharpiegate go. In fact, #sharpiegate got more media coverage than the three separate incidents where two ICE facilities and a USCIS facility were attacked.

@Vaasman: You should re-read my posts again in this thread. You are clearly misinterpreting my comments.

I'm not harping on it. I'm just stating the facts on it.

Trump shouldn't lie so much :)

This is a conspiracy theory. You have no proof Trump intentionally goofed up this week to "pwn da libz" like some 13 year old 4chan troll. It's easier to just look at what it is, he was wrong and doubled down on it.

lol am I? You're doing your flailing best to push fault away from the clear and evident problem by saying this is somehow equally at the feet of people who are doing exactly what their job is supposed to do. It's a tired deflection technique.

There's not much to misinterpret.

The September 1 NOAA Forecast (day of the shit-tweet) didn't even have the storm hitting AL.

This is a Trump gaff, and he quadrupled down on it.

“This falls into such uncharted territory,” said Craig Fugate, who was Florida emergency management chief under Republican Gov. Jeb Bush and director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency under Democratic President Obama. “You have science organizations putting out statements against their own offices. For the life of me, I don’t think I would have ever faced this under President Obama or Gov. Bush.”

@Vaasman: It is not the job of the media to make mountains out of mole hills, but a las, "orange man bad" mindset philosophy reigns supreme so here we are, politicizing weather prediction. Calling a spade a spade means I'm "supporting him for no reason." Other than calling his antics asinine and idiotic, but that's neither here nor there apparently.
