"since WWII the President's party has lost an average 26 seats in the House"

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_midterm_election

Trump claimed an "historic" victory when he lost about 37 seats and lost the house popular vote by about 7 points(the GOP got a smaller percentage of the popular vote in the 2010 midterms) . LOL. GOP lost and did WELL BELOW average. Get over it

Not only that, the GOP lost 7 governorships, ~350 state seats, and 1 party control/supermajorities in several states.

@frogo0: Not sure but he gained seats in the Senate and kept the senate so that alone means it wasn't below average.

The people he endorsed also won and many of the Republicans that lost were not fans of Trump.

If some of that was grounds for punishment you would have been IP-Banned a long time ago.

Obama lost 63 congressional seats and 6 senate seats. Trump lost approximately 40 congressional seats and gained approximately 3 senate seats. That does not appear to be exceptionally low. Although Arizona was lost that is only 1 senate seat he will still have a net gain.

Trump lost the popular vote by 3 million, that alone makes it historic....just not in Trump's favor.

He will do it by what he has been doing.

Dismissing information that doesn't support it.

Exaggerate any information that might seem to support it.

Then he will make shit up, and lie through his teeth. He is obviously pathological.

Then when that fails he will just use the "who knew it would be this hard" card.

Even then it won't matter because his supporters are still so damn gullible (or dishonest) they will continue to believe him.

Trump managed to keep GOP senate control which is critical in blocking Dems controlled House of Representatives

President Trump is just the sixth incumbent in 105 years to win Senate seats at the midterm elections.

Since World War II, the average loss of House seats at the midterms is 30.

President Harry Truman lost 54 seats in 1946

President Lyndon B. Johnson lost 47 seats in 1966

President Gerald Ford lost 48 seats in 1974

President Bill Clinton lost 54 seats in 1994

President Barrack Obama lost 63 seats in 2010

Both Clinton and Obama lost the Senate as well

So the Republicans were able to increase their Senate majority, though not by as much as some predicted. Meanwhile the democratic House gains looked modest on election night, but have now developed into a more significant win.

I wonder how this will affect the rest of the Trump presidency. More judges but no legislative accomplishments? Or perhaps some actual political bipartisanship now.

1. Trump reverts to Clinton/Obama style EO usage.

2. GOP controlled Senate can block Dems controlled House of Representatives.

@ronvalencia: I think the biggest difference here though is that most if not all of those presidents were able to pass some legislation in the first two years of their presidency before losses at the midterms. By and large, this hasn't been the case for Donald Trump.

I may be mistaken, but it seems like the first half of the term is the time when you want to get your legislative victories in, so you have something to campaign on for re-election in the last 2 years. It's not like it's going to be any easier now that the Democrats control the house.

Really the Republicans should have got a lot more done when they had control of everything, but they didn't.

@ronvalencia: 1. Yup true, he could continue along the executive order path. Not as impressive as passing legislation though, and likely the less preferable option for the GOP considering all those EOs can be penstroked out of existence the next time a Dem takes office.

2. They can indeed. I reckon both parties will have to be careful what they choose to block or investigate with the 2020s coming up. Neither wants to be seen as too partisan or obstructionist.

Republicans has their semi-Dems positions, hence even planned parenthood de-fund bill was killed by some GOP. Many GOP moderates has lost their seats to Dems, hence this mid terms has acted as a cleaner to remove semi-Dems from GOP.

depends on what the average is. the 2010 defeat could also have been exceptionally low in comparison to average.
