On the debate stage in Houston, Bernie Sanders frustratedly batted away any comparisons between his brand of “democratic socialism” and that of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro. But that was mild stuff compared with the red-baiting going on during the commercial breaks, when viewers were treated to a commercial in which Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s face goes up in flames, replaced by images of skulls from the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia.

“This is the face of socialism and ignorance,” intones narrator Elizabeth Heng. “Does Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez know the horror of socialism? My father was minutes from death in Cambodia before a forced marriage saved his life. That’s socialism. Forced obedience. Starvation. Mine is a face of freedom. My skin is not white. I’m not outrageous, racist or socialist. I’m a Republican.”

The ad was produced by New Faces GOP, Heng’s new PAC, which was created in March and touts itself as trying to bring younger voters and people of color into the Republican Party. Who is Heng, you might ask? She’s a former staffer for Rep. Ed Royce, worked on Donald Trump’s inaugural committee, and ran unsuccessfully in the 2018 election against Democratic incumbent Jim Costa in California’s 16th Congressional district. As a young, minority woman, and the daughter of refugees, running as a Trump supporter, Heng attracted some national media attention during the midterms, with the Wall Street Journal even suggesting she could be “an Ocasio-Cortez for the GOP.” There was also some controversy when Facebook blocked one of her campaign ads, which told her parents’ story, because it featured graphic imagery of the Cambodian genocide.

In 2018, Heng ran as a relative moderate, focusing on issues like clean water, education, and supporting a legislative solution to give legal status to young immigrants covered under DACA.

But comparing AOC’s politics, which would be considered center left in many other Western countries, to a genocidal totalitarian regime that killed as many as 2 million people, is not moderate. It’s ludicrous and reprehensible. Perhaps Heng should ask the president she supports why he is so quick to defend the leader of an actual totalitarian, Communist regime.

The Daily Beast reports that “New Faces GOP appears to be purely a Heng-related venture,” with many of its funders and staffers carried over from her congressional campaign. After the ad aired, the GOP’s AOC carried on a brief feud with the original AOC on Twitter:

If the goal of the ad was to get people talking about Elizabeth Heng, it was a rousing success.

...

What... the... hell? That is just disturbing. The right dislikes it when people on the left compare Trump to Hitler, yet there is nothing similar to comparing left politicians like AOC to communists?

@nintendoboy16: Free healthcare, free education, guaranteed jobs with a guaranteed wage. Yea that kinda sounds like communism. At first glance it doesn't look bad till you realize the reality of what it takes to pay for it.

Yeah, the wealthy are going to have to pay taxes like they used to in the 50s and 60s. Soooo horrible. How will they all survive? It would be a crying shame if American families had to go from working 2 jobs back to 1 to raise a family again. Oh, the fascism! I could tell me kids that I knew what it was like to be "free", back in the good ole days of republican America when I was free to work 2 full time jobs just to pay for health insurance, instead of 1 job...

@LJS9502_basic: not as bad as this ad that labeled republicans as crazed racists trying to run over minority children in pick up trucks.

Holy straw man argument Batman! The individual who made that ad really failed at political discourse. Like the article says, AOC and politicians of her kind would be centre-left in places like Europe and Canada. Claiming they want to be the Khmer Rouge is not only absurd, but downright offensive. It's a cheap trick to get people to associate very different people, political views, and time periods.

1. Why are they running ads against AOC? She is not even running for anything.

2. I love how people confuse socialism for despotism, fascism, and tyrrany, and all that stuff. Funny how they never confuse it for, idunno...

  • the fire department
  • National park services
  • Police departments
  • Public education (ok, bad example, but it's better than nothing)
  • How about social security? You're gonna bitch about it 'til you need it, and believe me you will need it.
  • Minimum wage
  • Child labor laws

Basically any country that has their shit together, has a hefty socialist aspect to it.

3. AOC picture on fire with a bunch of skulls in the background? Save the drama for your mama.

Heng is a very stupid person.

She needs to actually really learn about the Cambodian genocide, because not only did other socialists (Vietnam) actually stop the genocide and overthrow that government, Ronald Reagan supported those who carried it out after they were overthrown.

And she is from Fresno, who should have leaned what happened with the minor league baseball team when they accidentally ran a video in the stadium that compared AOC to Castro and Kim Jong Un. Doesn't turn out well.

Once again, it shows the stupidity of AOC's detractors. It shows that AOC is mastering the GOP, including Trump himself.

@mrbojangles25: bad comparison, watch that ad and then watch what happened in charlottesville and get back to me. That was definently the angle they went for tho, especially with the tiki torches at the end of the ad. Maybe the right should just start making compilation videos of antifa as thier political ads.

Maybe a reanactment of a masked dweenus smashing randomn people in the head with bike locks.

The discourse has become so divided and insincere, at this point maybe we should just start killing each other..

You are entitled to your opinion on those issues, but the advertisement was still some nutjob nonsense. Some of those ideas are often found in Capitalist Nordic countries rather than actual Socialist & Communist countries. A far cry from her being some GENOCIDAL DICTATOR for preaching those popular ideas. There is 0 logic in defending this advertisement.

But the burning of the photo was the cherry on top of the lunacy, and I wouldn't think that as acceptable no matter how unpopular the policy or party affiliation.

AOC is for a communist ideology, so not sure what you are upset about here?

Also, communism is not the same as calling someone Hitler, I hope i don´t have to actually explain the difference there.

Also not sure what planet AOC is on, but disagreeing with her politically is not racist.

AOC is not a communist. There's a fine line with what communists wanted and what AOC is fighting for, and unfortunately, I can tell you slept through your political science class because you don't understand anything.

@Jacanuk: You aren't getting it.

How is AOC for communism? In fact quite the opposite, as she holds libertarian views on civil issues outside guns. Not only that, she wants to decrease the national security state, a Ron and Rand Paul type position. She even got support from Freedom caucus members in some of her motions.

And the right is well known for using people of color to cover their racism.

@texasgoldrush: lmao AOC is no where near being libertarian, banning airplanes, forced racial equity, "guarenteed" jobs, banning cows, the new green deal is all you need to read to know she is full of shit. Just another pandering idiot corrupted by intersectional 3rd wave feminism who could gives a rats ass about individual liberty or the constitution just big government ideals.

Those pictures of her crying in that empty parking lot did make me chuckle though.

The funny part about the ad was she said she was not white.

What does that have anything to do with the ad and the message?

If only there was a whole continent full of countries that offered all of these things to their people that we could look to as an example...

This is how good conservatives are at messaging. There are sooo many people (lots of them Democrats even) in America that totally buy into this idea that the richest country in all of human history, is the only one in the first world that can't afford to pay for these things. I just don't get the math behind that mindset.

The first four items you mentioned are not free. They are expensive and are paid for by tax increases. Social Security is a government Ponzi Scheme, Bernie Madoff, is in prison for doing the same thing. Minimum wage have been distorted. Child labor laws are the only ones that are relevant, but it is not because of socialism.

So we do away with employers unions, Business roundtable, as well then? If workers can't work together to improve their situations, then why should employers be able to?

Should I mention that ideas like workers unite came before Communist Manifesto? But surely you know this already.

Still you are actually to lazy to explain it.

Jesus Christ, these countries have higher taxes to pay for social programs!? I thought the free college was free!? Are you going to tell me next that taxes would have to go up to pay for Medicare for All too!?

Yes, I understand that taxes would have to go up to pay for these things. I think it is still worth doing despite the fact that my taxes would go up. Jobs are getting more and more specialized due to automation and outsourcing of simple tasks. A high school education does not go as far as it used to. It takes a degree now to earn what a diploma could get you 40 years ago, and we need to adjust policy to this new reality. Otherwise more and more people are going to end up on welfare or WICK or whatever because they ended up in low paying dead end jobs.

$100 billion a year would more than cover the cost of tuition free college, and congress threw that much money at the military 2 years ago without batting an eye. That bill passed the Senate with 89 votes.

@horgen: the green new deal proposed by AOC is riddled with intersectional feminism/socialism. Its disquised as an enviroment bill, but its got alot more to do with socialism, guaranteeing jobs whether you able to work or not? The government stepping in to adress the gender wage gap? Adressing unequal racial equity? What does any of this have to do with the enviroment???

Its not a long read, AOCs green new deal is only 14 pages. I recommend you check it out yourself, its a quick read. Here is my source and he points out several of the things i mentioned. However if you dont trust this guys take, just read the bill yourself. There is a link in this source to a NPR page that shows the bill it its entirety if you would like to read it.

Workers should have no access to social programs or bargaining power! Anything that restricts upward redistribution of income is communist.

Do you know who Marx is?

Good, then you know his views and how he saw unions.

So we do away with employers unions, Business roundtable, as well then? If workers can't work together to improve their situations, then why should employers be able to?

Should I mention that ideas like workers unite came before Communist Manifesto? But surely you know this already.

Still you are actually to lazy to explain it.

Not sure where you go from what I said and then to "getting rid of unions"

I am simply pointing out that AOC is a socialist who borders on the core communistic ideologies. You can disagree with that all you want and we can take the whole Karl Marx Soclaismen/communism debate if you wish.

But nothing will change the fact that AOC shares many of outer rims of Socialism which is closer to actual communism.

@nintendoboy16: Trump is not Hilter since border protection has kickout browns, yellows, blacks and whites.

Hilter's idealogy is based on racist socialism i.e. state defined race based control over means of production. The left's racist afrimative action already mirroring state defined race based control over means of production.

Traitional far left socialism has state control over means of production.

AOC's "cow farts" mixed with far socialism idealogies are extreme.

Both Benie and AOC doesn't know about Australia's top five economic freedom ranking while maintaining universal with private health care systems i.e. two systems with one country model for both eductaion and health with cost controls.

Nordic states combined population size and economic power wouldn't match Australia.

The goals and objectives of the green new deal are fine. As are half of the statements around the goals and projects that would need to be in place to enable the GND objectives.

What is whack are the other half of the enabling goals and projects, specifically 4 G thru J and M thru O. Those in particular look like a shopping list of social issues that may or may not aid a successful GND, but certainly are not directly related or required.

A more seasoned politician might not have trolled those shopping list issues as it distracts from the core issue and provides fodder for detractors.

But the actual goals and objectives are fine along with half of the enabling means statements.

A final note is that I find the overall structure of the draft to be poorly worded and laid out. It reads like something poorly slapped together at the last minute to support a broad policy objective, with a sprinkling of pointless 'something for everyone' statements tacked on for pointless ideological reasons.

@judaspete: A 31% tax bracket? No thanks!

Keep in mind the US would probably have to pay even more. How about you ask these multibillion dollar corporations who outsource everything to China and pay their employees shit to give scholarships to current employees with the possibility of better jobs within their company?

@SUD123456: I dont like it at all and find it to be trash. To be honest as shitty as i find it to be, I dont think AOC wrote any of it, I think this was written by her handlers within the justice democrats, (she was just the face in the position to present it), you know about the Justice democrats? the group partnered with TYT (the young turks) you know that progressive youtube show with that fat sweaty buffalo Cenk, always bitching about white people while denying the armenian genocide.

@jeezers: what don't you like about the core objective? Frankly, I don't see what there is to dislike about it, as an aspirational objective.

As for your other comments on those people, I don't know. I am not American and don't closely follow your politics and factions/sub-factions so I have nothing intelligent to add, as I know nothing about those individuals except that I have heard the names/labels before.

I would be all for private companies subsidizing healthcare and education for their employees if that was working. Many already do, but many more don't. Most people are employed by small businesses that can't necessarily afford to provide a lot of these benefits (at least that's one of the common right wing talking points).

How would you propose going about this? Would you force it on companies through legislation?

Also, communism is not the same as calling someone Hitler, I hope i don´t have to actually explain the difference there.

It kind of is, actually. Communists, like the Nazis, have lead totalitarian regimes. Mao and Stalin, like Hitler, killed masses of people in their own countries. The only difference is one side is far-left, while the other is far-right. But that is it.

Spare me your exceptionalism.

@judaspete: Yes I would. Or tax the shit out of large companies who refuse to offer it. What's the point of massive successful multibillion dollar American companies if they don't help Americans? You're asking the tax payers to pay for shit that corporations should be paying for.

Companies should be offering scholarships to lower level employees with the goal to give them the skills to succeed and be promoted higher within the company.

National Review - right wing site

Its worth ignoring it.

And second, addressing other issues is REQUIRED for environmental policies to work.

Those are all bad, as is the one in the OP.

Okay, this I agree with. To an extent anyway. Part of the issue with this idea is a large chunk of the population works for small companies (ones that employ 50 people or less). A lot of these just aren't profitable enough to pay for healthcare and education, but their employees need these things. That's why I think these services need to come from some centralized institution. Otherwise anyone who doesn't work for Google gets left in the dust.

But yeah, tax the crap out of Google to fund it.

Wrong

AOC's ideology is quite Western European, with some American libertarian thinking as well.

She is a libertarian socialist, and her positions match this. And she is different from Bernie in this regard.
