Poll Do you approve of the job Trump is doing? Do you trust him when you hear him speak (Please read the topic before voting) (46 votes)

I trust what the president says, but do not approve of the job he's doing. 2%
I do not trust what the president says, but I approve of the job he's doing. 13%
I trust what the president says and approve of the job he's doing. 20%
I do not trust what the president says and I do not approve of the job he's doing. 72%

So I'm listening to a 538 podcast and they are interviewing the man at the Washington Post who is in charge of the group who rates politician's statements as true or false and gives them a Pinocchio rating. They're doing this podcast because the president has reached 10,000 recorded untruths (their word, my word is lies because that's what he's doing, but I digress) since becoming president.

The thing Nate Silver brought up that I wanted to discuss was that there are supporters who say they do not trust what Trump tells people, but they do approve of the job he's doing. I felt like this was an interesting disconnect. People simultaneously don't trust him, but they do approve of his results. I was listening to a separate podcast where they interviewed a Trump supporter and asked him how he would handle doing business with him and he thought for a moment and said that he would get half the money up front so he didn't get screwed. Again, approval of him, but not because he trusts the man.

I was wondering who here, if anyone, also has this disconnect between trust and approval for Trump.

@Jacanuk: I mean, it's legitimately a question about Trump for supporters like yourself. It's meant for you (and others) to add nuance to a discussion (or not if you don't feel there needs to be) that often lacks nuance.

How many times a day do you need to read a Trump thread? look at the forum it´s called Political forum but 95% is about Trump and there are and have been several threads about exactly what this thread is about.

But happy fishing hope you catch some.

You don't have to respond if you don't engage on the topic, but I don't see any other topics specifically wanting to discuss the disconnect between job approval and trust of what Trump says.

So, does anyone actually have a video of the real Donald Trump having a temper tantrum because someone else disagreed with him? And I don't mean a stern speech and name calling. I mean an actual toddler's hissyfit, since everyone claims he does it all the time. I just simply have never seen it. Sounds like a popcorn flick though.

I trust him more than I trust the main media outlets. He seems to be doing his job as well as any president. The guy definitely has problems. But at least he's exposing the media finally.

I trust the president and approve of the job he’s doing 100%.

I do not trust the Washington Post who’ve been called out multiple times for fake news and have had to publish retractions just as often.

I'd assumed the vast majority of his supporters believed his statements. Perhaps that was an incorrect assumption.

You probably should have added another option saying that you trust him some of the time, but not all of the time, because he obviously makes some questionable if not outright false statements, but there are plenty of other things that are true. The biggest thing you have to realize when looking at Trump supporters is many of them are more concerned about results than appearances or perceived moral superiority. For example, telling someone that is pro-life that they shouldn't vote for him because he is on his third wife or he screws porn stars isn't going to make them vote for his opponent that has been faithfully married to the same woman for the past 30 years but is pro-choice.

When he says something that is completely out there it makes many of us cringe and say he's simply not helping the issue. A loud minority may kiss his ass and buy everything he says but many others will call him out or at least distance themselves when he says or does something they don’t agree with. But that by itself isn't enough to totally cut off support, since the president is doing many of the things they voted for him to do. Many of them are not going to go scorched earth on him like Ann Coulter; if she wants a wall she can call Trump a wimp all she wants for not building it fast enough but at least he is claiming he is trying to get it built. If Trump loses election and someone like Beto gets elected now she gets to watch Beto not only refuse to build the wall, but possibly sign an executive order to tear down sections of the wall that are already up.

Many parts of the media are telling you he is the worst president in history, he is a racist bigot, he is in bed with Russia, and other things very unfavorable. Most of Hollywood hates him and calls him all kinds of insults, and a few celebrities such as Eminem have taken it a step farther and said they don’t want Trump supporters to be their fans either. Despite those things, his current approval rating goes between the low and mid 40s on average. President Obama practically had the media and Hollywood worshipping him and he was only a few points higher around this same period of his presidency. The concept of a silent majority is real, and that goes for other hot topics as well and not just supporting the president.

I think that is an easy false assumption there.

@joshrmeyer: he’s not exposing the media, they’ve been exposed for a very long time. He’s leveraging the public’s distrust in them for his own ends. He’s manipulating people too dumb to understand what he’s doing.

Trump is a president for people who vote against things rather than for them, and for people who vote for emotional reasons.

You don't vote for Trump because he has good ideas, you vote for Trump because he will stop the other guy you don't like. You don't vote for Trump because he is well-spoken and educated, you vote for Trump because he is no smarter than you are and speaks his mind.

I don't think all Trump voters are idiots (though many are), I just think they lack critical thinking skills and the ability to remove themselves from the equation for five minutes to see how bad a man like Trump is for the big picture.

TL;DR: No, I don't approve of the job Trump is doing and I don't trust what he says. Trump is playing a game, not working to serve, this is all bullshit to him and his existence as POTUS just shows how many suckers there are in the world.

I mean he's be a proven liar by pretty much every single news organization out there, including Fox News. It's actually gotten to the point where if you don't think he's a liar you are deliberately burying your head in the sand.

It's Shep Smith. He's the only one as far as I know, but he seems to call out Trump's BS fairly regularly.

I'm not sure what you want here. You asked where on Fox News do they call Trump a liar and Shep is the one who does it the most. That said I'm not at all surprised that he's inconsistent about it. I imagine he would completely lose his audience if he were, and at this point I don't expect consistency from any republican much less a Fox News host.

@undefined: The wall isn’t being paid by Mexico, not everyone has healthcare coverage, he is not winning the trade war, the coal industry is not employing more people, the climate is increasingly warm and there were more attendees at President Obama’s inauguration.

He did however earn over an extra USD 100 million for those tax cuts!

lol 'trusting' Trump? The man is a pathological liar and only concerned about himself. If Trump supporters were honest they would admit he's full of shit and they are OK with that seeing as the ends justify the means, with the ends being a GOP guy in the executive branch.

the standards are COMPLETELY different.

respected news organization gets info wrong, prints retractions

trump gets basic info wrong DAILY: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@comp_atkins: Have we seen a single mainstream media outlet apologizing to their viewers about the Trump/Russia collusion fakery? No. That was their main story for two years and reporting was fake and wrong. They literally wasted their viewers time and haven’t apologized at all. In fact, some outlets (CNN, MSNBC) doubled down on it and still cry conspiracy. At least the FBI came forward and admitted they knew the Steel Dossier was completely fictitious. Do you not trust the FBI?

Could you provide a source for that information? Factcheck.org has graded the statement of the dossier being a fake as false, and Vox reported that Fox News normalized this lie about the dossier being fake.

Fake news! Praise the orange god, solar divinity. Oh mighty Trump the infidels that doubt thine powers to alter reality shall be smitten by both the weight of the elephant and the bite of the fox. Allow male vitality pills to bless us and redneck angels to erect a wall, for all that is brown us bad. Praise the orange lord, maker of truths!

He may be referring to their left-leaning bias. I watched and listened to them interview Sam Harris twice and it's really hard to take those clowns seriously. But yeah, facts are facts. I wouldn't call them the biggest fake news source.
