https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2021/04/20/derek-chauvin-jury-reaches-verdict-george-floyd-death-live-updates/7298158002/

GUILTY on 3 charges In the case of Derek Chauvin, the jury delivers a verdict of in the death of George Floyd after only 10 hours.

• 2nd degree manslaughter - GUILTY

• 3rd MURDER - GUILTY

• 2nd degree unintentional murder - GUILTY

Not surprised at the manslaughter/unintentional murder verdict. The 3rd degree murder one surprised me a bit. But then again, I wasn't there in the courtroom, so can't really say.

Hopefully the next thing can be a mix of both police reform, and messaging to not resist, but sue/take action after complying.

During/After the verdict he appeared quite calm all things considered. The state pen for an ex cop? Ouch. Even the county jail (unless I heard it wrong) for the time being won't be fun.

Big victory today, and this is only going to be the beginning of many more cops getting locked away for their crimes.

We're entering the era of police accountability actually holding them accountable.

Yeah I can only imagine. I have zero skin in the game, all the way up here in Canada. You have to deal directly with whatever the outcome is.

The disbelief in Derek's eyes as the guilty charges rolled off was priceless. People in his position are just not used to being held accountable. He might had a better chance if his lawyer did a better job at defending him but either way, the cameras we have now are just to powerful and for that reason, cops better watch out. Justice was deliver.

True but in another way, it needed its own thread, so I support this thread. Plus, that last thread was somewhat old anyway.

I don't think the 3rd degree should have stuck but negligence definitely. I think the jury was basically scared for their own safety and that the mob would have come for them if they didn't convict on every count.

@girlusocrazy: Glad to help... but I honestly think they were. Otherwise, I believe it would have been a hung jury and chaos would have ensued across the country. In fact, any other outcome would have been millions in damages and dozens dead like last summer. They didn't have a choice at making this a fair trial.

I assume 3rd degree murder was just an add-on bonus but never thought the mob would start a riot if the jury didn't give'em what they want. But yeah, you are right.

given the history of trials in the US, I am shocked they got him on the murder charges. Manslaughter, sure, but murder?

In either case, this is good news.

But...it is only a start. There are still a few officers to discipline (namely that woman that shot the guy instead of tasering), police unions to depower, law enforcement to reform, and so on.

I hope this gives us the momentum we need to enact all this reform, and we don't just view it as appeasement and get back to business as usual.

Democrats blocked an attempt to censure Maxine waters over her trial comments. Good. If Trump is allowed to make these types of comments, so can she!

Bingo. Can you blame them after this?

For the sake of fairness, let us not besmirch the right wing by the worst of them, but rather compare them to the best of them. (Not saying you are doing this, but I see some worrying partisanship in the replies to your post).

The problem I have with verdict is the jury was threatened that acts of violence will be committed if they did not render a guilty verdict. The mob and even some of the politicians have stated they intend to use the same tactics in further trials. Each trial is different in facts and circumstances which will not matter. What happened here was no different that the tactics used by the KKK in the south to convict blacks. It was wrong then, and it is wrong now. The evidence in this trial was sufficient for him to be found guilty by a jury of his peers. Now he has a good grounds for appeal thanks to Maxine Waters and the mob and even the President. This case will now probably end up in the US Supreme court because of their actions, and the justice that was sought may be invalidated.

His emotionless demeanor, while awaiting the verdict, was not what I expected. I agree he knew it was coming which makes it all the crazier but he must have been resound to his fate in some fashion. Blinking like mad? Very noticeable but for someone getting jammed up for decades he was stone. Maybe his lawyer explained to him the impending outcome.

The Judge said Maxine Walters statements could be used in an appeal. Judges never do that. The judge and the defense attorney also made mistakes that could be used in an appeal.
