Kyrsten Sinema won a close race last year against Republican Martha McSally to replace retiring Republican senator Jeff Flake. After Sinema’s win, McSally was appointed to replace interim Senator Jon Kyl, took Senator John McCain’s seat that became vacant after he passed away.
After she took office, she stayed mostly moderate in her voting record, and she has stayed out of most of the partisan bickering between both major parties. One incident that put her in the spotlight (besides her unique attire on the Senate floor) was the fact that she was one of the few Democratic women that chose not to come to the State of the Union earlier this year wearing all white and she was on camera applauding President Trump while many of the other Democrats remained seated.
The Arizona Democratic Party is apparently upset with her current voting record and are especially mad that she voted to confirm Attorney General Bill Barr and other officials for the Trump Administration. Her not joining fellow Democrats in trying to reinstate net neutrality was mentioned as well.
Dan O’Neal, the state coordinator for Progressive Democrats of America, told the news outlet that the censure is an effort to push Sinema back toward the left.
“Here’s the thing: We really support Kyrsten Sinema, we want her to succeed, we want her to be the best senator in the country,” O’Neal said. “But the way she is voting is really disappointing. We want Democrats to vote like Democrats and not Republicans.”
While the Arizona Democrats are complaining that she’s too supportive of Trump, she has only voted with him 19% of the time during her time in the Senate. Maybe they’re upset she isn’t voting with him nearly zero percent of the time like she was AOC or something?
Do you think she’s not far enough to the left or do you think she’s doing what she needs to do to increase her chances of being reelected in a red state like Arizona? Keep in mind she doesn’t have the luxury of a reliably blue voter base like senators in blue states like California so she has to at least try and please the GOP voters every once in a while.
