This has just broken in the last couple of hours. America, this is your Kristalnacht. What will you do? The right, as of this evening, has divorced itself indelibly, from any apparition of being a family values platform. Remember this moment and remember to tell your children that you lived in times such as these.

"Children are biologically programmed to grow best in the care of a parent figure. When that bond is broken through long and unexpected separations with no set timeline for reunion, children respond at the deepest physiological and emotional levels," she said. "Their fear triggers a flood of stress hormones that disrupt neural circuits in the brain, create high levels of anxiety, make them more susceptible to physical and emotional illness, and damage their capacity to manage their emotions, trust people, and focus their attention on age-appropriate activities."

At least this way when they cross the border again in 15 years as adults they'll fit trump's criminal profile.

I can't even comprehend how a person can take away a parent's infant child, let alone how an entire government can condone this.

There has got to be a better way to do this.

Seems like even Republicans object

This is getting out of hand, I'm sorry, but are republicans going to sit back and let this happen?

And, no. Democrats are not going to negotiate. This falls under Trump and come midterms it's the issue to create a blue wave. Since when did the U.S become the land of placing kids in concentration camps?

*Internment camps. We aren't committing genocide. Yet.

But I agree, I don't know how Republicans can sit back and watch this happen. I mean I know they're all about solidarity at any cost, but there comes a point where the traditional Republicans (which I believe are still the majority in hiding) stand up and kick the shit out of the nationalistic crazy far-right minority.

This is a shame. However, with all of this mess you would think that the parents would be smart enough not to try to illegally enter the country with their kids. I feel sorry for those kids.

So, you're saying we should be in a race with the cartels and corrupt governments of South America that these people are fleeing from on who can treat them more atrociously? Asking for a friend.

Yeah, not really a tough choice.

Do you want to see your loved ones drowned in buckets of bleach while you are flayed alive...

...or risk getting separated by a first-world country practicing third-world dictatoresque draconian forms of law?

Parents should be prosecuted. What should we do with their children? This is not fair to the children.hopefully somebody figures out a good answer soon.

Dear Republicans,

We have a bipartisan history of doing these sorts of awful things. Will any of you here put the past behind us and work together to help these kids regardless of the politics?

Just reply with "I'm in" if your down with it. If you don't have anything nice to say be like Thumper.

Welcome to Trump's America. Where the concept of law rules over all sense of morality and common decency. Imagine how many people we would have sent to execution if it were a part of the law against jaywalking! Cons are no better than the Germans.

You know, you're probably right. I keep expecting these things to be ummmm...cyclical? I guess.

But the Republicans just keep going further to the right. More extreme. More nationalistic and xenophobic.

I suppose asking the GOP to come to it's senses is too much to ask. The best I can hope for now is either the GOP expels this extremist faction from their party, or the extremist factions leaves and forms their own party.

Either way, I just can't believe the whole party accepts this directly. They're likely putting party before principle, people, and country out of solidarity. I know many Republicans, they're good people day to day.

No. Let the extremists take over the party. It makes it so much easier to just make a party irrelevant than it is to leave these cancerous braindead underwear stains flagging in the wind for a while before they come right back to where they are comfortable. Authoritarian jingoistic fascism needs a face. We were able to pretend it wasn't there before and we really can't go back to that, either.

I'm laughing at all the fake outrage. You people don't give a shit about these kids beyond their political usefulness. If you couldn't hang this shit on Trump, you wouldn't care.

Decisions have consequences. If you bring your kids along to try to enter another country, in violation of its rules and laws, you're liable to have your kids taken from you for a time, while the responsible adults figure out who you are, why you are here, and do these kids even belong to you. Fortunately for the people we are talking about, their children are being taken in to custody by a government with the resources and compassion to care for them in a safe, clean, healthy and humane way.

These adults have taken these kids on an extremely perilous journey to arrive at our border uninvited. I suspect we are caring for these kids far better than the adults we are separating them from. We are taking the kids to a clean, safe facility. We are feeding them, providing them with medical care, education, and entertainment while we check out the adults who brought them here. If the adults are found to be deserving of asylum, the kids will be re-united with them. If the adults are not found deserving, the kids will be re-united with them and we will deport them back to their home country together.

Horrible as this issue is, it's only fair to say that this note from 2014 shows kids in cages and all those terrible things that all your twitters and instagrams and other interwebs are up in arms about as if it were something new that Trump created because he's pure evil.

@comeonman: Yeah, you do seem the kind of person who would be laughing when others are suffering. You think a small child or toddler cares whether they have entertainment or not when they're torn away from their parents without knowing what the **** is going on? Did you hear those recording of children screaming for their parents? I'm sure you didn't because I don't want to believe that you would be such a stain of a human being to be laughing if you had...

You have either had such a blissful childhood that you cannot put yourself in these children' shoes or you had such horrible parents that the thought of being separated from them brings you joy. Either way, reading your messages, you got hurt. Children aren't objects to be put in lock-down and then eventually returned, regardless of much "compassion" (can't believe you used that word in this situation in a non ironic way) there is while bagging and tagging these children.

And yes, these kids' parents brought them along an extremely dangerous journey but we need to think of why. I'm sure it wasn't because they were bored and decided to cross the border. I've read somewhere today "you have to understand, that no one puts their children in a boat unless the water is safer than the land" and that seems to sum up the situation quite well. Their life is shit, they're afraid and lost and their kids got ripped away from them for it but I guess there's always someone somewhere, laughing in their safe spot.

Where did I imply these facilities are resorts? Are you implying that we can only take temporary custody of these kids if we then place them in the lap of luxury, i.e. a five star resort?

@korvus:

Children are taken from adults all the time in this country, when authorities are uncertain of the adult's identity or ability to care for the child, or when the adult is being detained due to criminal behavior. To say this can never be done is absurd.

@comeonman: it came off in the overall tone of your post is all. It’s incredibly traumatic for these kids to be torn away from their parents, it doesn’t matter if they’re well taken care of, and I’d imagine most would choose to remain together in hunger than be separated and have food.

Children are taken from adults all the time in this country, when authorities are uncertain of the adult's identity or ability to care for the child, or when the adult is being detained due to criminal behavior. To say this can never be done is absurd.

I won't respond to any of your emotional drivel.

They are taken and usually placed in the care of a relatives. An aunt, uncle, grandparents, etc. This is such a dumb argument. They aren't throwing kids in a concentration camp in these cases.

Also what these "illegals" did is not even a felony. It's a misdemeanor, on the level of traffic offenses. They failed to fill out some paperwork. You act like they are murderers or rapists. Gee wonder what orange reality TV clown would have given you that idea...
