Don't think 8chan will go anywhere, since it's community is so large and much like Encyclopedia Dramatica or Wikileaks mirror sites will be set-up jumping from host to host, still, it's verging ever closer to being deemed a terrorist site.

Related video -

8chan, an online forum linked to a range of disturbing content including several white supremacist mass shooters' manifestoes, briefly resurfaced Tuesday morning after it went down Sunday night. Minutes after coming back online, it went dark once again.

The day after a hate-filled screed allegedly linked to the suspect in the deadly El Paso, Texas attack was posted on one of 8chan's boards, the web security service Cloudflare announced it was pulling 8chan's access. Hours later, an 8chan administrator tweeted that the online forum would be relaunching using the Canadian cybersecurity company BitMitigate.

But that firm soon ran into trouble. Bitmitigate is owned by Epik, a Washington State-based web services company that has gained notoriety for stepping in when far-right websites go down. In November 2018, Epik agreed to provide services to Gab, a social media site associated with far-right ideologies that lost its hosting provider after an avid poster on the site killed 11 people in a Pittsburgh synagogue. BitMitigate also provided services in 2017 to white supremacist hate site the Daily Stormer after Cloudflare discontinued that site's services in 2017.

8chan's operator, Jim Watkins, criticized the Voxility and CloudFlare decisions in a video posted to YouTube Tuesday morning. Appearing on camera next to a bust of Benjamin Franklin, as the "Taps" bugle call played in the background, Watkins said 8chan cooperated with law enforcement after the El Paso attack that left 22 dead, as well as the deadly shooting early Sunday in Dayton, Ohio.

"Within minutes of these two tragedies we were working with FBI agents to find out what information we could to help in their investigations," Watkins said.

Three hours after he posted the video, 8chan once again appeared online, only to go down within minutes. A BitMitigate page briefly showed in its place with a message saying servers could not be accessed.

On Tuesday afternoon, Epik announced in a statement on its website that it too had decided to cut 8chan off, after its initial attempts to provide services to the site.

"Upon careful consideration of the recent operating history of 8Chan, and in the wake of tragic news in El Paso and Dayton over the weekend, Epik has elected to not provide content delivery services to 8Chan," the company said. "This is largely due to the concern of inadequate enforcement and the elevated possibility of violent radicalization on the platform."

As 8chan attempted to regain its footing Monday evening and Tuesday, it also began shoring up its Plan B.

"Currently setting up 5 more onion routes to help ease some of the bottlenecks into our hidden service," tweeted 8chan administrator Ron Watkins, who operates the site with his father, referring to a version of 8chan that operated uninterrupted on what's known as the Dark Web. Websites on the Dark Web are not accessible via traditional web browsers and cannot be searched, or indexed, by Google and other search engines.

CBS News confirmed Tuesday that 8chan's Dark Web site is functioning but slow, despite the efforts to "ease some of the bottlenecks." Immediately visible are boards featuring the site's hallmark hate speech.

When did the "chans" turn into right-wing cesspools? Between 2003 and 2007, 4chan was just weird with shocking content.

8chan are the people driven off 4chan for being too scummy.

Let that sink in a moment.

Only a couple have. 4chan still has some elements of that, but drove the worst ones off. But, basically, the chans are where people deplatformed by twitter and Facebook that have nowhere else to go have been ending up. From there, they descend into the Dark Web or make connections with the Chinese.

If someone wants to host that shit hole they can. If others don't want to then they don't have to. I actively encourage people to confront web hosting companies about the content they are propping up.

interesting how they whine about gab or 8chan or some other small service that only has a couple here and there, but these people are ALL on twitter and facebook and those sites are clearly not being held to the same standards.. this is just big tech taking the opportunity to use a tragedy to go after some of their competitors, as usual

Same thing.

After looking it up, 8 chan is just an unregulated site where people can post whatever. So given no moderation, it may attract some sketchy people.

I only know about 4chan (which seems to investigate mysteries/"paranormal" happenings?), but any site left unregulated like that is dangerous.

Honestly, forums that ARE regulated can get sketchy stuff from time to time. While I hate deleting stuff from the internet, I think it should occur if this is a spot for terrorist activity.

It should stay. Imagine if these people didn't have this outlet (they are just going to move to a different site anyway) and They've done some amazing things too (Including 4chan though). There's been a few pedo rings shutdown because of it under the "anonymous" group shit. The whole point of the website was just to shitpost. It's common knowledge that anything there shouldn't be taken seriously. The only reason the mass shooters post there before is because they know it will spread and people will laugh about it because it's not happening to them. Why not just monitor the site and use it for early warning?

It came about some years ago after the censored 4chan for a bit. Every one called moot (owner) a sell out and started to use that site.

@ronvalencia: Did that guy post on 8chan? From my understanding that was the El Paso shooter. The Dayton guy was just a bullied nutjob that threatened to shoot up his school a few years ago. El Paso guy specifically targeted Hispanics, whereas the Dayton guy chose people at random.

That's not censorship or loss of free speech. The private companies are doing this, legally. The platforms they host are being used to radicalize those "mentally ill" people (for the most part towards right wing lunacy). That's bad for business.

8chan Owner Called to Testify Before Congress After El Paso Shooting

Congress Tuesday called on the owner of online forum 8chan to testify after the infamous site was linked to a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas that killed 22 people.

The House Homeland Security Committee demanded site owner Jim Watkins explain how the anonymous messaging board will tackle “the proliferation of extremist content, including white supremacist content.”

In a letter to Watkins signed by Rep. Bennie Thompson and Rep. Mike Rogers, the House committee said the El Paso shooting was “at least the third act of supremacist violence linked to your website this year.”

“Americans deserve to know what, if anything, you, as the owner and operator, are doing to address the proliferation of extremist content on 8chan,” it said.

The Homeland Security Committee posted a photo of the letter on Twitter.

The notorious messaging forum remained offline Tuesday after two tech companies cut ties. On Monday, cybersecurity firm CloudFlare stopped providing service, after which 8chan signed up with Seattle-based Epik, Reuters reported. But Epik’s own infrastructure provider, Voxility, responded by dropping 8chan.

Fredrick Brennan, 8chan’s creator, has called for the site to be shut and told Reuters he regretted making it.

The messaging board’s current owner, Watkins is an American Web entrepreneur living in the Philippines. He responded to the letter from Congress on Twitter, offering to talk over the phone. “Rest assured I am not an extremist. My telephone should work worldwide,” he said.

Social media sites have come under increased scrutiny for their role in spreading harmful content online. In April, Australia passed legislation to hold social media accountable for what is shared on the platforms, while the U.K. has proposed making social media executives personally responsible for content posted to their sites.

It's funny how many want private companies to make their own rules, and when they do it is suddenly censoring their right to free speech.

It's a balancing act. On one hand you don't want a site promoting, creating and celebrating terrorism.

On the other, you don't want the fanatical left to create this future where Wesley Snipes will happily dispatch confused police officers.

its facebook and twitter trying to make the rules for OTHER companies because they refuse to apply leftist-favored censorship to their own companies

and when three tech companies own about 90% of the market share of information that people see and hear online, and take a very clear position of intolerance towards other ideas, while also hiding behind protections fraudulently calling themselves "platforms", its becomes more of a private company thing, and more of a legal matter

and yes, zuckerberg is calling for "internet rules"

Are you saying that certain platforms should be considered on the same basis as news media and thus present a more balanced viewpoint(compared to what is done today)?

LMAO. Now we have an ardent defender of free speech complaining about people exercising their own free speech (in calling for censorship and loss of free speech).

Make up your mind. Or better yet, recognize that there is no absolute right to free speech in any society and that regardless of the degree of freedom of speech, no one is immune from the possible consequences of exercising that right.

Also, the specific use case that you cite involves more variables than just mental illness. I have yet to see anyone suggest that individuals with mental illness be denied the right to free speech simply because they have a mental illness.

Hopefully these folks up there arent referring to me about free speech, because theyd be wrong.

Going by his manifesto he was radicalized by far right extremism. Possibly from online groups. Just like it happens to many Islamic Terrorists.

Not the MSM, unless you are talking about FOX which often mentioned things found in his manifesto.

Reddit permanently bans people for violent threats against each other.

8chan shared a live stream of the new zealand mosque shooting.

But sure lets conflate the two.

At this point who gives a shit

If you want 8chan or other violent cesspools to host shitty content go right ahead and host the web services for them. Don't expect other people be required to do so.

did you know that both the el paso and dayton shooters had facebook accounts? the answer is simple,

Facebook must be shut down!!!

Deflect deflect deflect!

Why not? we have had murderers post on Facebook, hell we have had people beat up people while using Facebook live? Im pretty sure the new Zealand shooter went live on Facebook during his killing spree,

or when these Chicago kids beat up a mentally retarded classmate on facebook live, shut it down, the platform hosts hate.

I've got a better idea. Mind if I come over and plant a sign in your yard? I'm thinking, 'Jeezers sucks Trump titties.'

You've got to host my speech on your property. If you're telling me I have to adhere to any censorship on your part...well...we wouldn't want to be a hypocrite now would we?

Lmao you seem mad at the fact i'm pointing out that almost any online forum takes the chance of hate being posted on it. Sorry that bursts your little bubble. Trump doesn't have anything to do with this lol
