Three explosions that occurred when people picked up packages outside their residences appear to be connected, Austin, Texas, city Police Chief Brian Manley said Monday at a news conference.

A Monday morning explosion killed a 17-year-old African-American boy and also injured a woman at the house. A second Monday explosion left a 75-year-old woman in critical condition, the chief said. A March 2 blast killed a 39-year-old African-American man.All the explosions occurred when people who lived at the residences went outside and picked up packages, Manley said. The packages were not delivered by the postal service or delivery services like UPS or FedEx, he said.

That is so f up...

I don't think I'd pick up random packages left at my doorstep though...does that happen often in the US? Can the mail service just dump stuff at your door?

It’s time we start arming mailmen and mail recipients with bombs to defend against this.

Yep, that ring commercial is not just fiction, it actually happens, which is why Amazon has tried with the smart lock system where the delivery man can enter your home and put the package down there.

Ring Doorbells, It´s a company that makes Doorbells that can be accessed by your smartphone with camera and floodlights

They made a commercial where a couple is trying to steal a package left at the doorstep.

I'm sure it wasn't. My point was that here the post office workers aren't allowed to dump the package. If it doesn't fit the mailbox they are required to deliver it in hand so if a random package showed up on my lawn I would be immediately suspicious and know it wasn't something delivered by mail.

I'm talking about the Netherlands and they definitely are not allowed to just dump packages without you being there and you can (and are asked to) report any post office worker who does that. What they can do (and I don't agree with) is if they also have a package for your neighbour and you aren't answering the doorbell they can leave the package with your neighbour and leave a note in your mailbox saying "your package is with your neighbour at (house number)"

No it's not. Unless the sender requires a signature they do not have to give it physically to an individual.

Yup.

I've had hundreds of dollars of stuff left on my front door step. Christmas gifts for my family, medicine, and the like. Hell I think I came home to a 500 dollar video card (in plain box, mind you, but still) sitting out there.

Generally they don't require a signature these days, and they're not going to come back for a second attempt if they don't have to. I can't remember the last time I had to sign for anything at my home.

Granted, mail theft is a serious crime these days, so that might have something to do with it. Five years in jail and/or 250,000 dollar fine.

In Norway it is kinda weird. The (until a few years ago) company (Posten meaning mail) can not leave packages on your door step, if they don't fit in the mail box, they go to the nearest post office where you need to pick them up.

However a competing company can actually leave packages on your door step or the ground beneath your mail box.

Don't they have to come by twice before leaving it at the post office?

The culprit is most likely a white-american or arab-american. if he's white, then we will have a long debate about mental illness. if he's arab, then we all must assume that he's muslim and we must end islamophobia
