Turning off your system from the back without shutting it down first is the main cause. Also poor ventilation is bad but not as bad as not properly shutting it down

It just means it's a hardware failure - there is no single cause. Generally it's associated with overheating - but there have been other reported causes as well.

Sorry for your bad luck man. These have gotten allot more common lately which has me a little nervous - but it's just the state of gaming hardware these days and theres nothing we can do about it.

Just send it in for repair if it's still under warranty.

it means a vital system error. could be anything from the HDD to the blu-ray laser.

mine did it when i spilled water on it and it got in the vent.

when it dryed from the vent it worked again.

Mine got it when trying to install MGS4 onto my HDD, my guess would be harddrive failure

People fly around "it's the switch from the back" That seems to be the easiest answer to throw at a PS3 related problem it seems. It's the switch's fault. I highly doubt it. Nobody knows the cause, all that is know is that it's a hardware failure. I took care of my PS3 really good and never abused it, I still got YLOD anyways.

When I've been looking this up, all I've been seeing were 60 gig models and YLOD happening after atleast a year of use. This is starting to make sense to me because I've had mine for a year and 10 months and it always seems to be the same result. As this seems to be a growing problem becoming more apparent (the year's been up for awhile now), I hope "the powers that be" at Sony would take a look at this and fix these defective problems free of charge to those whom have had YLOD. Especially out of no where and no fault of your own.

Mine was idle for a couple of minutes when it went down. HDD wasn't even in use at the time.
