Shoot!
The first one for the PS1, my favorite MGS and the best of the whole series. It had by far the best pacing and the plotline wasn't all over the place.
Which one have I played the most? MGS1, easily. Would play that game over and over as a child.. My favorite today is MGS4. So many great characters and Solid Snake is just so damn cool. I love Big Boss too, but Snake is cooler in my book.
2, 3, and Peace Walker are great. Ground Zeroes is good. Never played Portable Ops. Rising might not have Solid in the title but it is canon, and it is great. That final boss sequence... So damn good.
....Not really relevant but since it is a MGS thread, the twist in the true ending to Peace Walker really bums me out.
Easy MGS 4. Actually the only one I liked. Never liked the controls on the others.
I think 2 and 3 control horribly, but I like the stories so much I still replay them both every year or two.
MGS3 is my favorite. Almost in every way.
MGS1 is kicking a lot of people's ass in the nostalgia department, lol. It's one of my favorite stories in the franchise, being the reboot of the Metal Gear series, but by today's standards it sucks. I can't with good conscious even consider it as the best game.

Eh, I would say the game play of MGS2 and 3 are trash too. Even with subsistence. Still love 1, 2, and 3 though.

That one, i disagree with. When the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection came out on the 360 and PS3, replaying the game for the first time since on the PS2... they felt legitimately like modern, next-gen games (at the time) with the higher resolution, achievements/trophies, extras and improved controls. They needed a good touching up, but they held up well for my tastes. I cannot say the same for MGS1 however.

Different strokes then I suppose. Peace Walker feels like a mostly modern game to me but 2 and 3 feel completely archaic to me. I've played 2 and 3 3 times each on the HD collection so it isn't like it stops me from playing them but I warn people that I get interested in MGS that the play like shit other than Peace Walker and MGS4. :P
MGS 1 > MGS 2 > MGS 3 > MGS 4
MGS had a pretty decent, self-contained story. It was also short, but sweet.
MGS 2's story is all over the place. Gameplay expands in a meaningful way over the 1st game. Doesn't capture the charm of the 1st IMO
MGS 3 had a lot of interesting aspects to it but the game was a bit clunky with all of its unneeded survival stuff. The story really did nothing for me here. It's so unmemorable and bad, I couldn't even recite what happens in the game despite beating it twice.
MGS 4 was poop. Felt like I've entered the Dragon Ball Z universe in this game. Everything about the game is awkward, from the sleep-inducing cinematics to the control scheme.
My favorite is probably Metal Gear Solid for its tone, but it has major pacing issues. MGS3 is the most well rounded experience, but MGS4 is the best game.
Just turned my PS2 on for good time sakes to play the regular MGS and wow, didn't know I would get sucked in all over again. I have to say MGS is my favorite going through it again, however, (SPOILER) revisiting Shadow Moses on MGS 4 almost had me in tears haha. Epic series can't wait till MGS V PP!
@bamboozled: MGS 3: It had the best balance of what makes Metal Gear great. Great set of bosses. Check! Interesting story. Check! Self aware humor(including hilarious codec moments)? Check! Great Graphics and epic cut-scenes? Check and check!
Other games in the franchise might do one or two of the above better than MGS3, but none of them do all of the above at such a high level. It's a game so badass, it has it's own Bondesque theme song!
MGS3 is my number 1 favorite.
In order its
MGS3
MGS4
MGS2
MGS1
MGS PW
MGS5
For me, MGS5 is by far the worst in the series. I was really looking forward to this game, but my god, its beyond awful. Freeroam is the only thing i like, but even that feels like it has its bounderies.
