^^^ this, this and THIS! i'm amazed more people haven't mentioned Bioshock.. of all the games i've played old consoles included, never has a game sucked me in the way rapture did..Rapture. Nothing else came close.

Though I don't really have a reason, the first game I thought of was Beyond Good & Evil.

ABSOLUTELY! I have a game save just before the bar, where you can play air hockey against the walrus, etc? Just so I can go in there and lounge and listen to that awesome song they play. And I like loitering in Mama-Go Garage, too. Rasta Rhinos, it's so silly-funny, and i love it. That is one of the best games ever made, not that it's overly original or unique, but the world they created is so... Addictive, to live in. GTAIII was like that for me too, I would go down to the waterfront to watch the sun come up. Drive around just listening to the radio. Liberty City sucked me into that world in a way I haven't felt for the rest of the series.
Phantasy Star 4, the series started getting more formulaic and less imaginative with the PSO games but PS4 was a trip.
well Super Mario Galaxy 2 gets points for having a vast array of varied and equally imaginative game worlds. the imagination on the developer's part was other worldly with that game.
Rayman Origins also proved to be extremely imaginative...
This kind of imagination is becoming less and less apparent in the industry unfortunately
Boletaria and Lordran, both are amazing worlds with endless monsters to kill, just filled to the brim with so many hidden secrets.
The mass effect universe if that counts. Enslaved was also pretty awesome. I won't leave out Rapture either. Oh and the Helghast homeland from K3.gial240
Oh, that most-CERTAINLY counts!!!
:D
Odin Sphere, although Castlevania:Symphony of Night and either of the Super Mario Galaxy's are strong contenders.
It's a toss up between FFXI Online, WoW and the Elder Scrolls series.
So much history and content in these worlds, its hard to keep track.

These, save for FF11, because I haven't played it. But definitely WoW and the ES series have GREAT worlds, and sidequests that only enrich them.
Kinda surprised no one has mentioned Rapture from BioShock yet, that is by far the most immersive, atmospheric and one of the most beautiful yet disturbing places that have ever been in a video game.anime_gamer007
Totally forgot about bioshock! you're absolutely right. THIS is one of the most imaginative worlds, next to WoW and the Elder scroll series. I hate to do it, but I would add World of Goo, too. People don't realize it, but it's a phenomenal game with very play-turned-dark kind of world. Check it out
