I was just kind of thinking to myself the other day because I popped Lost Odyessy back in the X-box(ooooooo i know x-box in a ps forum) sidenote:if they had it for ps3 I wouldve bought it. So anyway Im playing it and I realized something it has a full flush open world your free to fly an airship around and what not. Which is fantastic if you ask me. Then I remembered reading an interview on why FF 7 has never been a remake even though SE remakes every other final fantasy title, and their arguement...........On a next generation system having a sprite run around on a world and run into a forest with his head popping out of the trees just wouldnt be realistic enough. Now I agree with said statement but it would be just as easy to make those trees so Clouds head didnt pop out or something. Anyway in the longrun all I'm trying to get at is what happened to the big fascinating worlds with tons of side quest and things to do in it like a casino just to get away and kind of mess around in the game on a lighter note. Lost Odysessy in my opinion is actually a great game, who cares if some people consider it "dated" you know what if it isnt broke dont fix it, I dont mind having an ATB or turn based battles they can still be challenging, I remember dying in Xenogears (usually in a gear) many of times and just thinking man how could I have done that better. Games focus to much on graphics and inovating everything nowadays maybe I'm just a sucker for a good old school JRPG but bring the big worlds back they are FUN! I mean is it really that big of a deal to put a game on 4 discs dang now it took the developer 2 dollars to make it and only gets a 58 dollar profit, and you know what Im not afraid to have to switch discs, did it all the time in ps1 days. And on that note if FF7 was remade and the world was so huge it was on 5 discs and cost 80 bucks Im willing to bet everyone who was a fan would still buy it. I miss the big worlds of rpgs :(

Right. Big world maps in RPGS :) ok! I agree, they were a great part of the old school RPGs. I do see where they are coming from through. It would be an immense amount of processing to do the full overworld. They probably think they need to make it all to scale (The head poking out of trees comment), and have it all flow so you could walk in through the gates of a town with little load. I do miss them though.

I have to agree and say I am completely turned off if there is no open world exploration in a rpg (My biggest gripe with FFX along with it's lame artistic styling).

Very large map/map maze(or you call it open world) is meaningless now... lol spending hours for meaningless combat? It works in 90s but not now.

today, how can you call it open world when you play against A.I.?

Real open world rpg = mmorpg. IF you want to play mmorpg, play it on pc...

after all, typing is very important in mmorpg and keyboard is faster to use skills than controller.

I go with you on the last comment afterall I spent about 6yrs in Vana'diel, but alas maybe its just nostalgia but I liked it. Level grinding even in a sense could be fun I loved putting all the hours in just to whoop on the final boss in 2 rounds. Little self pride/confidence thing going on there.

i understand your feeling, but not many ppl still like it today...That's why I said it worked 90s but not now. After People know how mmorpg and online shooter are like. They get less patience on games, it gotta be very appealing and fun. Endless level grinding andcrazy map mazeare too hardcore to most gamers today...

While i like open world RPGs, i prefer RPGs that are a bit more structured and i guess linear u could say. My favorite RPGs are Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect series, both BioWare RPGs who while they arent huge open world like Fallout or Oblivion are still made great with emphasis put on story and every locale makes sense.

If your just looking for open world RPG, you should look outside of the JRPG genre and try some of Bethesda's. They have Oblivion, Fallout 3 and their publishing New Vegas from Obsidian.

I prefer to have the freedom to explore. I feel like many RPG's recently have forgone that option. Here is the story, here is the hallway/cave, run down it kill everything move to next hallway/cave. Bring back the RPG's of old or make more like Oblivion and Fallout. I personally can not wait till we get an Elder Scrolls V. Fallout Vegas should be great, but I must say that I was disappointed with the challenge in Fallout 3 as it became too easy at the end, another fault with RPG's....sometimes they are just too hard or too easy at the end.

I completely agree with you. I learned to tolerate it when FFX was released and then I just gradually got used to it with RPG's after that. I wish there could be at least one good RPG that comes back with this style of gameplay.

too bad that open world RPG only happens in MMO's nowadays.
